I raced against Mark and Nelson in San Diego and beat them both multiple times in the points race but of course I couldn't hold a candle to either one of them in matched sprints. Both of them are\were phenomenal sprinters. And both of them are\were fantastic people. I'm sure they are both still solid people that you can count on. Great to relive the past here.

You can tell from the video what a nice guy Vails is. He gives Gorski a pat on the back to congratulate him after Gorski wins the first race of this two-out-of-three Gold Medal matchup (03:38).

I was lucky enough to be there that scorching hot day day having flown over from Manchester , UK for a long planned Summer holiday at the LA XXIII OIympiad with my LA family who managed to secure us tickets for multiple events. I was already in love with bikes but aged 13 that day I suddenly fell in love with track and road too. I'm 50 now and still ride every day and have several bikes.

I had to face Nelson Vails a few weeks later in the first round at the US Nationals. They did not need to consult the photo finish camera.

not sure what the rules were back then but, in the 2nd heat Mark would have been dq'd for coming into the sprinters lane when Nelson took it for the sprint.

Unfortunately, it no longer exists. It was torn down in 2001 to make room for what is now Dignity Health Sports park, the home of the Los Angeles Galaxy soccer club.

Not great tactics from vails. Gorski likely was too strong anyway but vails also was drafting too close, you want to leave about a 20 ft gap when going from second place to kinda suck onto the back wheel with extra speed and then overtaking with that surplus speed. In Germany that was called the "sprinter's gap" and you could see guys like hesslich using it a lot. But who am I to criticise an Olympic silver medallist, that was an amazing success considering were Nelson came from (and really for anybody).
