Thank you very much for sharing this, I am actually in the video, as spectator, at 20 seconds, I remember seeing McRae lose it on that bend. The Audi was amazing, speed off the line was incredible, off the scale, as was Rohrl's driving. A joy to watch.

Cheers for sharing, CVS shot a lot of great footage on Irish international and national rallies in the early '80's

They did indeed. I tracked down Flor Griffin who now lives in the US. He's long since lost the master tapes but I've been able to send him a few MP4s and he's been enjoying watching them over again, by all accounts.

Thanks for the upload. Brings me back to the days when I used to watch all these names battle it out on Grandstand on a Saturday morning. Wish the WRC was more accessible these days

Great footage! Quite interesting and unusual to see an HB-sponsored Audi at a BORC event. And I'd say it's pretty rare to see an S1 not have reliability issues on an all-tarmac event. I bet Jimmy and Russell would not have minded being behind the wheel of an 037! Thanks for this upload!

I didn't knew Eklund drove lovely lovely Corolla AE86 there at tarmac event. What a joy. A pity that he retired from the event here, as I can see.

I agree butb preferred The Ascona . Well tbh I m a Lancia fan but love all rally cars of that era . Fiat 131 Abarth was another favourite of mine.

Judging from the quick shifts of Walter, Audi was already using that automated clutch system, where you had button for the clutch in the gearstick.
@VHSRallies2 жыл бұрын
An interesting thought; I only ever thought that technology was used on the S1 E2, not the non-winged version. But maybe...
@d-d-i2 жыл бұрын
@@VHSRallies They actually had two different systems what they tested: button clutch on the gearstick and that PDK gearbox tested in late '85 on S1 E2. And that button clutch one most likely was tested on S1 in here, his shifts are just way more faster than rest of the field.
@XJ220NJ2 жыл бұрын
@@d-d-i I recall him demonstrating that version where pressing the button on the gearstick would also move the clutch pedal, so you had to be careful to have your left foot out of the way or else - ouch! Not sure which version of the quattro it was, though (suspect the S1 E2). Either way, I think it was mainly meant for situations where the left foot was needed for braking, not necessarily to speed up shifting...?
@d-d-i2 жыл бұрын
@@XJ220NJ Difficult to say, would have to ask from Walter himself, as he was main tester with the S1 E2 model when they were developing it. But still, they might've tried everything to make that S1 succeed, as it was turned out to be extremely troublesome car to drive. And since the S1 E2 is just evolution from it with wings etc, they might've already tested that button clutch on S1 already. Because what else would explain the shift speed difference being so much between Walter and rest of the drivers. Or then Audi just had damn good gear levering system etc.
@XJ220NJ2 жыл бұрын
@@d-d-i I'd say the difference is twofold. For one, this is a fully factory-backed car, so it's running at ten tenths with top-level engineers supervising every single cogwheel. For another, Walter is a two-time world champion, an exceptional talent like Markku, Hannu, Juha, Henri... not to say that Jimmy and Russell are (or, were...) not exceptional themselves, but there has to be some sort of gap between national level champions and WRC winners. Plus, what difference should this button make in regards to shifting speed? I mean tensing your index finger need not be faster than straightening your left leg, right? 🙂 But maybe, you know, the Audi just *sounds* like it's shifting quicker than the rest ;-)

I could watch Jimmy McRae destroying the bank and ending up the right way round, over and over. Absolute peak McRae Sr. Pity he never scaled the heights his sons did, but then you can say that of most of those leading drivers. Walter Rohrl excepted of course!

That's a great channel. I had hoped to get the original recordings to convert and maybe clean them up a bit, but I'm told the original tapes for that channel are long since lost. I've a potential source for further Flor Griffin CVS shows - and I'm pleased to have tracked down Flor, who now lives in the USA, and sent him MP4s so he's been able to watch these reports again.
