Reminds me of my days in the 1980s in the San Fernando valley. Me and a dozen friends terrorized the roads and mountains in so Cal on 2 strokes. RZs TZRs NSRs RDs Gammas. We had em all. Fantastic memories of buzzing around at 80 carving thru Angeles Crest in shorts flip flops and no helmets , splitting traffic on the ventura freeway!!!!! Nothing like having 15-20 2 stroke screaming by you like a swarm of hornets. Two strokes rule. Its a disease. The good old days.

Awesome story, other than the fact that y'all rode without helmets. Still blows my mind, that land splitting for motorcycle riders is legal in California, and that they truly believe it's safe, when it's not even close to being that. Different Strokes For Different Folks, literally and figuratively. Lmao.

Takes me back. I had a RZ500 in 1986 which I bought in Brisbane Australia and rode through to Cairns where I was living at the time - about 1750 kilometre trip. The 500 in this video runs a bit rougher than the one I had, and mine always kicked over first time. Was a joy to ride. I'd also ridden the RZ250 & 350, and the power bands on those were far more pronounced that the RZ500. The 500 had a more even spread of power. Having owned a Katana before this the RZ 500 handled beautifully in comparison. Sold it in 1987 - truly collectable now.

BRINGS BACK MEMORIES: Thank you dudes! Unbelievable, as I remember riding my RZ along with a TZ250 around UBC area, practicing our turns racing around an empty school parking lot just like you two. The TZ dude had been stalking me, I figured, haha. And as it turned out on those streets, that TZ250 could keep up to me, which surprised me. I rode/raced my secondhand (bought in '89) '85 RZ500N with solo seat, ported and polished with Boysen racing reeds and used Michelins 185s on the back, around the streets and highways whenever the coast was clear. I got it in Toronto and rode it across the mid-US up to Alberta and over to BC. It took me 10 days as I hooked up with my bro and friend but could've made the trip in 7 days, I figured. Stupid bike for that kind of trip: earplugs for the violent noise, my inner thighs became hugely bruised in the end, avoided wrist and numb hands from the buzzing by making the throttle sticky and heavy to turn by putting a wind of rope retarding the throttle's motion. After making it through the Rockies in October (freezing temps) I arrived and lived in Vancouver for 11 years riding the RZ strong all seasons in Vancouver. Lost my license for too many points but it was worth it. Cleaned the carbs frequently, and changed and gapped a new sparkplug whenever a cylinder's exhaust wasn't pumping hot. Used Torco low-smoke 2-stroke oil; plus, a little Duralube now and again, and added an octane boost to bring up the octane to 100 each fill-up, which made it run long and relatively clean. Avoided using synthetic oil after the machine overrevved too easily and consequently blew a seal that needed to be fixed. Damn good times but young and mad times on that thing too. I lived on that RZ every day. Finally, I totaled it changing lanes goin' only 60km 'round a bend under a hidden parked car after passing a van, which blinded me like a billboard for that split second of the f'ing illegally parked car. I'm fine as I bailed safely, but the bike I ended up selling for parts as is for $250 to a dude wanting to rebuild it in Edmonton. That RZ was infamous in Van up to the year 2000 and was like a stick of dynamite to ride ~ light the fuse and go! Take care bros ...

Great Video, Brother. Highly interesting and entertaining. I'm very fond of your RZ 500, and would love to have the privilege of riding one. I've been a 2 stroke fanatic my whole life, which is a must for dirtbikes, although, I always owned fast 4 stroke naked bikes, until recently, when I was blessed and fortunate enough, to have a rare opportunity, to buy a fully restored from the frame up, with the engine taken off of the frame and rebuilt, 1985 2 stroke Yamaha RZ 350 Kenny Robert's edition streetbike, with yellow paint, and the old school Yamaha black and white block graphics. So damn fun to ride, when the powerband comes on the pipe, and it pulls you like a slingshot. Much more enjoyable to ride, than a very fast 4 stroke upright naked bike. Much love and respect, from New Orleans, La. Just subscribed to your You Tube Channel.

I took a 500 out for a test ride from the local dealership in Gloucester, UK one time.. Up until that point the most powerful bike I'd ridden was my Yam' RD430 (bored out 400) with Allspeeds and a 350YPVS rear-end grafted on by Harris Engineering (don't ask why, it was ridiculous) and even that didn't go THAT fast.. When the front came up without me even trying I couldn't believe it.. then I dropped it trying to 3-point turn across the road when I realised I'd been gone too long and needed to turn around.. bent the clutch lever and scratched the fairing.. that spoilt the ride back.. I was so ashamed I just parked it up, said thanks and left.. they got me next time I was in for a part and asked me to pay for the clutch lever.. so dumb.. so 18 years old ha ha..

250 just a little short leged for that 500 . still have my 500 from the eighties. It took me a couple of years to learn the steering of that machine , steering head angle and 16" front tire require you to go deep before turning. Even though it has very little rebound suspension once rolled over it stays planted.

Nice bikes even if though I always hated the skinny sound of 2 stroke :p Just some points on clutch less shifting cause i see you got some flak for it. While there are some bikes that won't like it, bikes with heavy flywheels or slow revving / decelerating engines. However sport bikes with close ratio gearing DONE RIGHT clutch-less shifting will not harm anything, and It's actually smoother, defiantly faster then clutching so acceleration bonus on up shift. This is because clutch re-engagement takes that split second as well as gears to mesh up again during that time you're loosing momentum. That loss gets bigger with slower and or sloppy clutch operation. Down shift take a little more practice and fineness but it becomes second nature quickly.

'83 to' 92,nothing but Kawasakis, they were the best. '19, money to get bike, nothing fancy, safe, reliable, fun, and my fitst thought on what kind of bike, no Kawasaki shops, thought good RD250LC, 350LC, or maybe RD500LC, how much fun to be had, on one of those. Turned down a CBR600RR, sight unseen, saw it wanted it, just sold, oh well I'll have to have the '05 GSF 650 BANDIT, not a Bandit S, way, way, way more torque on my 650 Bandit, turns out, one very careful, cautious owner, who basically ran it in for 15,000 miles, and it pulls, fly's up steep, steep hills, like it's falling off a cliff. Such a JOY to play with. RD, RZ500, very nice, but the Bandit acceleration, feels like an industrial catapult got involved with it's going. Professor B. T. E. OUT, BANDIT TORQUE ENJOYMENT.
