I had the pleasure to become friends with Mark. Short story: We met at a pro-am at Howell Lanes in NJ . . . I was MCing the event. In the paddock, we got to talking. I told him how I was a big fan of his . . . and then, he said: "Are you the Charlie Roberts on WJLK?" Yes. "Wow, I listen to you everyday . . . I love your show!" Then, when he found out that I was a bowler (decent/semi-pro), we were friends from then on. What was so cool . . . I was a fan of his and he was a fan of mine. Also, we were both model railroaders. So sorry he's had some health problems and I miss our times together. One of the good guys.

Roth was still at the top of his game back then, his last great year. But until I saw the end I did not know if this was his first major- I had forgotten- it was. Like Belmonte today, Roth redefined the game during his reign.

Troup's name was not a nickname. He was named Guppy after Guppard Filmore Parson, the only man to have bowled a 303. After his last strike, it was discovered that an error had left 11, rather than 10, pins on the lane.
