A rare Rich Campbell sighting. He's the only QB taken in the first round of a draft to never start a game. Even the following week, in a meaningless game against the Vikings, they still started Dickey over him, although Campbell played in the second half. Throwing the game winning TD here was his only NFL highlight

That is bizarre. You draft a QB in the first rd you are eventually going to play him and see what he can do. He must have been terrible in practice.

Larry McCarren said that in practice he never got the sense that Campbell was the guy who could lead the team.

About a week later, Bears pick up Greg Landry to play the season finale against Detroit. Landry played pretty well against his old team. Two weeks later, Steve Fuller comes back from a shoulder separation and plays well against Washington, stunning the Redskins in the Divisional round of the playoffs. Fuller only threw 15 passes in this game, but two were for TD's: a 75 yarder to Willie Gault and a 16 yr pass to Dennis McKinnon. The 46 Defense was still kinda new... Joe Theismann threw for 292 yards, and the Redskins offense rolled up 336 total yards with 22 first downs to the Bears paltry 13 first downs and 310 total yards. However, the defense got 7 sacks, including 3 by Richard Dent. Some of those sacks came during crunch time (remember him coming threw that double team???) when the Bears offense bogged down and Washington was threatening to take over the game. Bears did give up a lot of yards, but then again, Washington had a top ranked offense that year. But the Bears did put Washington on noticce when Todd Bell balsted and knocked out Joe Washington. He was no good the rest of the game after that hit!!!

Now in the 2nd quarter when Randy Wright goes down with his knee injury you see something that I just don't believe you would see in todays NFL. Several Bears players are standing there among the Packers athletic trainers while they are looking at Wrights knee. I honestly believe they are there to offer support and they are hoping he is ok. You just don't see that kind of class in todays game.

Bears already had that great defense in 1984 but their QB situation was a mess that season.

The Bears spent 1st round picks on: Mike Phipps, Cade mcNown, Rick Mirer, and that guy they picked instead of Mahomes. The mahomes travesty has been well documented. but the olden days history is frightening, too. Mike Phipps was a horrible QB, who was a wasted 1st round pick of Browns and had spent 7-8 years being awful. Yet the Bears gave up a 1st round pick for awful. That pick became HOF Ozzie Newsome. Rick Mirer? Another guy with a proven track record of being awful. McNown? How could anyone project him as a pro QB? Rusty lisch is a blessing by comparison. he cost them nothing and was 3rd string. All those bums above cost the team dearly and were expected to lead the team. I’d take Lisch over Campbell any day, wow how dismal. Campbel a 1st round pick who was in his 4th season and hadn’t played in over 2 years. He was horrific and cost GB a 1st round pick.

They had some issues at CB also with Shaun Gayle(rookie) and Todd bell having to start games at CB because of injuries. Bell started at CB in the championship game vs the 49ers which is crazy given he is a strong safety who finished his career at linebacker.

Bobby Douglass, Rudy Bukich, Jack Concannon, Bob Avellinni, Virgil Carter, Vince Evans. All that from memory of the 60s and 70s without even looking it up! And I'm sure there is even worse! 😲

I love Payton's TD run in the 4th quarter. He tossed the ball to a cop or security guard on the sideline after the score.

The '84 Packers were the best of Forrest Gregg's time with the Packers. Unfortunately it didn't get better. Strengths: The 7-1 second half record. Between 1968 (the year after Vince Lombardi quit as coach) and 1991 (the year before Ron Wolf, Mike Holmgren, and Brett Favre teamed up), this was the hottest stretch they had. James Lofton with his fourth 1,000 receiving season and averaging 22 yards per catch. Eddie Lee Ivery's comeback. He had been suspended due to substance issues the previous year (and unfortunately would reappear after his playing days were over but he did eventually overcome them) but he came back to help energize the ground game in the second half of the season. Defensive Rookie of the Year and one year wonder Tom Flynn. Nine interceptions in his first season. Unfortunately he only had two more the rest of his career and was cut by the Packers during the '86 season. However he did get his revenge against them at the end of that season by blocking a punt and returning it for a touchdown after he signed with the Giants and won a Super Bowl with them. Tim Lewis's second year. He was a ball-hawk who had seven interceptions and a touchdown and had 15 in his first three seasons. Sadly, his career ended early in his fourth season with a neck injury. An improved defense. To be fair, you couldn't get much worse that the '83 defense, which yards-wise was one of the worst in NFL history. But they created 27 interceptions and were 8th in pass defense that season. They were still 20th in run defense but they gave up over 500 yards less than the previous year, which was huge. Weaknesses: The 1-7 start. They won their first game by a point and then proceeded to lose their next seven to wreck their playoff chances before they started. They would have needed to win every single game in the second half of the season, although they came close and their only loss in the second half was in overtime on Thanksgiving to the Lions. The close losses. The only two games they weren't really in were against the Raiders and the Cowboys. Otherwise they were competitive in every other game. However, the six other losses were within a touchdown or less. They lost by two to the Bears in their first meeting, by three to the Buccaneers in OT in their first meeting, by six to the Chargers, by three to the Broncos (they gave up two touchdowns on fumbles in their first two plays and only gave up a field goal the rest of the way), by six to the Seahawks, and by three to the Lions in OT in their second meeting. If they won one of those games, they would have been in the playoffs due to their conference record (8-4 versus 7-7 for the Giants, 6-6 for the Cardinals, and 7-5 for the Cowboys). If they had beaten the Bears in the first game, they would have swept them and had the tie-breaker and would have won the division. Replacing Jan Stenerud with Eddie Garcia. I get the idea of having two kickers is a waste of a roster spot. And to be fair, Jan Stenerud was 42 that year and his leg strength was limited. Unfortunately Eddie Garcia is a classic case of having a kicker having a strong leg but massive accuracy issues. He was 3 for 9 on fields goals before he was cut and replaced by Al Del Greco, who had consistency issues with the Packers and Cardinals before getting a lot better with the Oilers and Titans. Garcia never played in the NFL again but apparently he never held it against the Packers in the long run because he joined the Board of Directors a couple years ago. John Jefferson's decline. Unfortunately the receiver they paid a high price to get (1st round pick, two 2nd round picks, and Aundra Thompson) had injuries that were taking a toll on him and only had 26 receptions in his fourth season. He was traded to the Browns in 1985, where he played only one more year. He has been looked upon as a disappointment because he had 1000 yard seasons in his first three years with the Chargers and never did that with the Packers, although he did have his moments with them and helped make the Packers passing game from 1981 to 1983 one of the best in league with him, Lofton, Paul Coffman, Gerry Ellis, and Lynn Dickey. The back-up quarterback situation. Injuries were starting to take a toll on Lynn Dickey and the back-up situation was a problem. They cut David Whitehurst, who was a Bart Starr favorite (I refer to him as Starr's version of Matt Flynn) and kept 1981 1st round bust and rag arm Rich Campbell (they passed on Ronnie Lott to draft him!) and Wisconsin rookie Randy Wright (a never-had-it). When Dickey was out, the passing game suffered.

The Packers opening season win against the Cardinals was helped by the Cardinals wildly erratic kicker Neil O'Donoghue. He missed an extra point which turned out to be the difference with the final score 24-23. I remember watching Del Greco in the Sugar Bowl when he played at Auburn. He kicked 3 FG's and Auburn beat Michigan 9-7.

@@Gen-X-MemoriesO'Donoghue also shanked the game-winning field goal attempt against the Redskins in the season finale. He makes the kick and the Cardinals win the game and the division because they would have won the head-to-head tie-breaker against the Redskins.

@@subtlebluntduality5997 Looking back its shocking that he wasn't released the season before when he missed 3 FGs in OT on the Monday night game against the Giants. If he made one of them and everything else stays the same the Cardinals would have also made the playoffs in 1983 too.

Watch for chippy play here. These 2 teams hated each other after this game beyond just physical play and rivalry. Packers were unusual in that they were in the top 10 in both scoring defense(10th) and scoring offense(7th) but only won half their games.

I remember this Sunday and this game. I didn't get this game I got the Giants at the Cardinals which was a great matchup. The reason I remember this game is because of the highlights that showed Payton playing quarterback. I miss these glorious days of the NFL. Players just lining up and doing their jobs without all of the ridiculous showboating on every play. Todays NFL sucks in comparison.

I think Campbell looks far worse. Consider Campbell was a number 1 pick, too. He has no arm, no legs, and slow release. He's terrible.

His name makes me think of another famous Rusty in Chicago sports history: Rusty Kuntz of the Sox! And for all of you snickering out there, please be informed that his last name was pronounced "koonts". At least on television and radio. 😏
