His first three years were not bad at all. Sometimes superstars take some time to fully develop.

I think, unfortunately, that Lafleur had Dionne to compare to. Dionne was on a crappy Red Wings team and his stats were so much better, I think that hurt Lafleur. (Right or wrong.)

@@September2004 you’re probably tight. But the only reason Marcel was doing bett er than Gbecause he became their go-to guy instantly. Wings had far less talent.

He scored 29 his first season in Montreal, not bad at all. I believe Gil Perreault, Marcel Dionne and Rick Martin got more ice time on their teams, but the belief in Montreal was that rookies and young players had to wait their turn. Punch Imlach told Perreault and Martin to focus on the offensive side of their games. Buffalo was a new franchise (1970) and they were selling the game to their fans. Not the same in Montreal.

@@jamesanthony5681 Yes. Lafleur was only playing around 10 minutes per game his first three seasons. Montreal liked to break the young players in slowly. Makes no sense to me but that's what they did.

I never knew that Lafleur was a center in junior until I read it in Ken Dryden's biography of Bowman.
