1985 MERCEDES 190e CLEANING OUT THE GAS TANK WITHOUT REMOVING TANK

So I'm hoping to be able to start up the 190e tomorrow, but I first need to clean out my tank and lines before installing new fuel pump and filter. Here's how I did it.

Honestly shocked me how well it worked. When I sprayed the pressure washer into the fuel line under tank, so much crud fell out making me think it was built up in the lines. After that all I got was clean water. My fuel pump came in and I should be installing tomorrow.

That's a pretty good idea I might have to try that. I've got an 1988 190E that has been giving me some fuel issues it has a new fuel pump and filter and vacuum lines so I think I might have to try what you did and clean the tank and fuel line next.

I opened this for my 1964 Ford F250 for cleaning out the gas tank. I have a 1981 Mercedes W123 240d and it is an incredible car.

Compressed air in the filler hole to dry out the inside before you add any fuel. Tank must be dry first or the water will settle to the bottom of tank and give you problems. Other than that great video. Keep them old girls on the road bro

Yes I wish at the time I had a compressed air tool but I let it sit about a week before using.

I am also trying to bring back a 1989 190E 2.6 It's definitely a labor of love and its going to cost a pretty penny to put back on the road.

A little disappointing that we don't see the car actually start up. Having said that, I do understand this a budget, low effort build attempt. But I do agree that the tank should have come out completely. I'm working on a 2005 VW beetle and all the plastic hoses in the tank are petrified and cracking off - so everything in the tank needs to be replaced plus it needs to be cleaned. In addition, putting water in a closed up gas tank seems like a suicide mission. There is no way that tank will dry out by holding open that little gas flap with a drill bit. As unpleasant as it seems, the best course is to drop the tank where possible. Or at minimum, pull the back seat, pull the fuel pump and get a nice big hole in the top of the tank to work from. I got Pete's point that he was just trying to get it running so he could move it around the lot though. Just sayin'.

Bought a 1990 300e today for $300. It sat in a field for 10 years with the gas cap off. The fuel tank is nasty.

The weird nut is a pre filter inside the tank. If anyone try this plz have it in mind. BTW love to see old beauties get back to life 😊

I assume the fuel pump is under the seat? I would've un installed the old one since you are replacing it and ran the hose there. And also after the degreaser sat, flushed it with 5 gallons gas water would've been dried by morning

Use the fuel pump access as an open vent to air dry thing up

Unfortunately fuel pump is located under car near the tank but outside.

That was an good idea but I probably would have did it with gas and gas treatment. I probably wouldn't try the water

Did you use only water or what chemical? My fuelpump is very loud at least time ... it’s 5 months old

The best way would be to pour some evaporust in and let sit but o only used water.

evaporust will clean out rust. It dissolves it.

I dried it out for a few days but this can be an issue. It's best to drop the tank if you can. But after doing this I got the car running great.

The "heat" mixes with any leftover water to create a solution that can be used by the vehicle fuel system

I saw a video and the guy removed the tank from the trunk of a 190e and it was only held down by 4 bolts...

Yea it’s probably super easy. At this time I just wanted to get it started and I had minimal time each day to work on it

Does this car not have a screen in the tank as does my 123 ? If so, the screen gets crud buildup on it which prevents fuel from entering it, out to the pump...You should really have removed that screen and cleaned it or replaced it with a new one... I can't see how putting water in the tank really cleans it out; especially if the prob IS the screen....

This was all to get the car running. The lines were clogged and hoses were shot as well as the bolt for the tank to get to screen. I planned to replace all of that but wanted to get it running so I could have a shop swap out some of the stuff on a lift
