Cleaning out an old crusty gas tank!

We attempt to get the gas tank on the '66 cleaned out. It's been sitting for many years with old gas in it!

I like that you are involving your son in the repair process; teaching him about tools, and how to use them, and safety, and 'letting him' do some of the work. A great way for a father and son to bond...the little guy will remember this long after you are gone. Nice job parenting.

I just finished a Mazda 323 GTX tank. It sat for 10 years with a quarter tank of gas in it. Having tried muriatic acid years ago with poor success I went with white vinegar, 5% cleaning vinegar. Four gallons of vinegar and filled/ diluted with tap water. Sealed the tank and let it set full of liquid for 8 days rotating it daily. Drained and hosed out the loose gunk and refilled with two pounds of baking soda and water, left to set 4 hours then drained and rinsed. Dried in the sun and sprayed inside with a full can of WD40. No solvents were used, the varnish came off with the rust with no sticky residue was left over. Just an FYI on what worked for me.

I cleaned out my 1995 Jeep tank that looked worse with some MEK from my hardware store and now looks new! Did it twice at 10 minutes per rinse and it wore acid resistant arm gloves Worked great

I’m needing to do the same to my grandfathers 1970 f250. Tank isn’t very bad but it’ll ruin the gas. Mine is bolted in and the factory stripped a nut I think so I had to get a grinder just to remove it

Great video and patience with that tank! So I’ve heard you can put muriatic acid in the gas tank as well. I need to drop my 55 nomad tank this weekend and see how bad it is.

If you use muriatic acid first put water in and only then add the acid, in at least a 1:1 ratio if not 2:1 or 3:1 water:acid depending on the strength of the acid you use. Make sure to wear proper PPE, safety goggles that cover the front & sides of your eyes, acid-resistant gloves and a decent face mask, and definitely do it outdoors because the fumes are nasty and you don't want to breath it or be near anything iron or steel or it'll flash rust it in no time. Obviously be careful to not get it in your skin or eyes and try your best to not breath it in (a fan would help). When it's done eating away the rust, you want to neutralize it with baking soda, lots and lots of it, and water, until it no longer foams. Add it slowly or it's going to be like a science fair volcano, and shake it so it gets to all the acid. Then rinse it out with water, add some more baking soda for good measure, shake it some more, then rinse a couple of times with water, dry it off, and you're done. It sounds involved and it is but muriatic acid is nasty stuff and if you don't handle, use and neutralize it properly it'll be a bad experience. Don't store it inside if you can help it, because of its effect on iron-based metals. Good luck.

muriatic acid, aka, Hydrochloric Acid, will dissolve steel. i wouldn't use it on anything where you were planning on storing fuel in it afterwards.
