This isn't today versus yesterday necessarily. This is Motorweek vs Motor Trend. Motorweek has always been geared towards the more educated and intelligent crowd.
@nunyabusiness896 Жыл бұрын
@@mediocreman2 I wouldn't say it's anything to do with being intelligent or educated at all. Motortrend today is trying to somewhat match Top Gear's "lore" approach to car reviews whereas Motorweek was trying to be like a video brochure of the car with a little bit of subjective opinion for things they really like or didn't like about a car. Looking back, it almost didn't make sense as it was shown arbitrarily on broadcast TV and the odds of a casual car buyer seeing an episode featuring the car they were thinking about was very unlikely. It was really only beneficial to people too young to drive but just wanted to dream about what car they might get (that's who I was) or for car salesmen to do research on the competition. Compare that to today where they would've been a great resource to quickly compare competing cars to make a buying decision, but now there's a zillion youtubers effectively making the same kind of videos, but perhaps not with the same level of consistency and fact listing.

Michael tucker this shit is biased as hell. The guy in the z28 roasted the tires and never attempted to regain traction. My 14.2 second 89 formula firebird with a free modded tpi305 killed sn95 GTs twice a week for years at Darlington dragway. Most of the sn95 GTs mustang ran high 14s and low 15s. My 02 ws6 6 speed was box stock and in mint condition when I got it with 33k miles on it in 2012. My first day at the track I was running 12.8s with a 2.0 60'. It killed stock 04 cobras as I got used to launching it. That z28 ls1 should have walked that shitstain the entire 1/4. I've never seen anyone but a complete newb run a high 13 with ls1 auto f-body. Those are decent driver in an LT1 times. The mustangs were very overrated on paper for their power numbers just to try to match up with the ls1 cars. The LS1 was very underrated considering most of the 6 speed cars would put down more power at the rear wheels than the engine was advertised to produce at the flywheel . Even a lot of stock autos put down 330ish rwhp when the flywheel numbers were suppose to be 325hp. This shit is a joke. The only mustang that could keep up with ls1 f-bodies was the 04 cobra and it took 8psi from a supercharger to do it. That's around a 50% increase over what that engine would have made naturally aspirated. Old lightly modified ls1 f-bodies are still beating the new 5.0s. At least those races are actually close. I have to call total bullshit on this videos drag race.

Back in 1998 I bought an SS Camaro exactly like this one. I traded in my 95 Mustang GT for it. It was so innovative with that LS1 engine - I disliked the mustangs 4.6, and the new cobra body style was much more subdued than previous years. 320HP sounded huge back then - the Corvette was only about 345 if I remember correctly. The camaro handled and drove much better, and the T tops were cool...but the interior materials were not as nice as mustang. These prices are a bit misleading, as both cars typically MSRP'd around 30 or a little more. By the time you add T Tops and auto trans to that camaro, the price would be close to 30, mine was a little more than that. I wanted a firebird originally, but could not find one anywhere and production had halted for the year...then I ran across the red SS in the showroom and I was hooked. Put a 100k miles on it over 6 years before I sold it. The only trouble I had was the AC compressor died at 100,000 so I had to replace that....but nothing else.
@batsonelectronics4 жыл бұрын
I bought a brand new 98 Formula with Leather and T tops for $25K. It ran 14.1 with the auto and only 100 miles on the odo. I paid full retail as I was the first in my 70K people town to get 1. It had just came off the truck. Still fully wrapped. I know the SS was faster than the Mustang but MW never launches well on GM stuff.
@Milehighsnake984 жыл бұрын
The price for the Mustang was accurate. There were no options for them. The F bodies were priced higher and that got GM punched in the kidneys for sales because the cobra was 99% of the performance of the SS, at a 25% discount. The mustang is definitely a better driving car though. Better outward visibility, more comfortable ride, more predictable handling. The crappy tires hurt the stock performance. I can only imagine what a stock 98 would do around that road course with decent tires. Today's high performance all season tires have as much grip as near-competition level summer tires back then. The cobra was actually intended to go against the E36 M3, not the Camaro.

pontiacGXPfan, Matt Dirks is on the right track. The Chevy pushrod motors are small on the outside. I've seen a photo of a LS motor next to a 32v V8 from Lexus. The Lexus cylinder heads are huge, because they each have 2 cams in them. From the outside the Lexus V8 looked almost twice as big as the Chevy, even though its displacement was 4L vs. 7L, and its power was 300 vs. 500. A Ford 5.0L DOHC engine is slightly bigger, costs almost $7000 brand new, and there aren't many of them available for cheap in junkyards (yet). The Ford 4.6L DOHC engines are actually bigger still, and I hear the aftermarket for them is fading away as manufacturers and vendors shift to favor the 5.0.

Supra TT single or dual, depending on the size of the exhaust you can get the same flow rate. When the Camaro concept for 93 body style was at the track, it was out running the Corvette in the qmile. There was an article back then in I think road n track stating that gm didnt want the pony out running the horse so they kinked the air intake and went from dual to single exhaust. I'm glad so they could come in 2nd to Mustangs for a while before they discontinue the camaro again. It's been great beating camaros consistently for decades

Back in 2004 when the cobra and the SS were common I used to own a 2004 Mustang GT six speed manual. My car's only mod was a Borla Stingers catback. I outpaced a 1998 Trans Am, took on a 2004 Mach 1 and stay ahead within a bumper and I also beat a 1998 Cobra but barely. All the races were pretty closed and I think the main difference was that I was a hell of a driver. I retired my 2004 GT when I sold it to my brother and bought a 2011 Mustang GT which is just a totally different beast of a car. Not once did I cared for the late 90s early 2000s Camaros. I always liked the Trans Am Ws6 and the Cobras better.

SpyderRios Falling off a cliff your '98 Mach 1 wouldnt stand a chance against a '98 TA.

@@Lucille69caddy there was no 98 mach 1 but I can assure you an 03-04 mach 1 was well within reason to give a stock ls1 car Fits. Evan Smith from muscle mustangs mag ran 13.1 at 105 mph in a bone stock mach 1. It def could compete stock for stock with an ls car of the period. That was one of the strongest mass produced na mustangs they made back then all the way till the coyote in 2011. Pretty badass for 281 cubic inches from the early 2000s.

@@midnight347 My bad. I meant to say ‘04 Mustang GT. I still say that 4.6 didn’t stand a chance against an LS1 T/A manual. Those 4-speed autos were horrendous and the weak link. They were also slower.
@Lucille69caddy3 жыл бұрын
@@midnight347 281 cubic inches, 4 valves/cylinder instead of 2, dual OHC instead of 1. You “little” this and “little” that guys omit those little diddies for obvious reasons. In fact, with all of that going on, it is actually physically larger in dimension compared to the 5.7 LS1. Park both cars side by side once. You’ll see.

That was so telling how they decided to launch the SS to make it close. On the street we all know how it went 😉

I owned a 98 Cobra. I put Eibach lowering springs on it, Cobra R wheels and tires. It was still disappointing on the our local road course, Waterford Hills. The brakes would fade badly if you were hard on them. I think my best 1/4 mile pass was a 14.1. It was a great looking and driving car for everyday street use. I sold it and bought a 2003 Corvette Zo6. Much better for track days.

Those late 90's GM's looked good; but hard to ride in when over 6 foot. The t-toped cars make it better....until it rains.

The reason is for weight distribution

True,, I spent all day changing plugs in mine. But setting the engine back farther is what makes it handle so well.
@mylt1z285 жыл бұрын
Had a 94 LT1, in case you couldnt tell by the screen name, book on a tune up was 8 hours. spark plugs you had to get 5 from the top and 3 from underneath and you had to have a swivel joint to get to most of them. When I did the only tune up she had 2 different sets of plugs. guess which ones were still OEM? LOL. She ran much better after having 8 matched plugs that were actually tight so there was no blow by. Changing out the distro cap was a joy as well. Required you to remove the water pump. I do miss that car though.

There were at least a few design reasons for the engine placement. In addition to weight distribution, it also allowed for the front end to have an aggressive nose that met with the aggressively swept windshield. I suspect that it also had something to with "safety-cage" construction; in a head-on collision, the motor would submerge under the passenger compartment.

The lower and farther back you get the engine in a chassis improves handling, weight distribution, and 60ft times! Read some old super stock drag racing books from the 1960s. Wealth of information that is still applicable today!

The Z28 would have crushed the Cobra in the 1/4 if they knew how to launch. The LS1 was a monster back in the day.

Looks like they only ran once in the drag, and he spun through 1st in the ss. I think they were just being lazy this episode.
