That must have been a blast and a great opportunity for a meet and greet for both drivers. John Jones sure looked happy to be sitting in the car and rolling back on the track after he and his team won 40 years ago. I’ve met Mr. Jones a few times, and he is the nicest, most knowledgeable and inspiring person when it comes to motorsports.

I'm sorry to mention it, but to me it's crazy what an impact aero had. The first of these was literally a Ford Capri with a Mustang kit, while the Capri was able to dominate the DRM (Beating Porsche 935's), the Mustang actually struggled, despite being the same car. It was due to the aero of the Mustang being worse than the Capri. This one had a different engine, but still...
@skaldlouiscyphre24538 күн бұрын
Differences in class structure played a role too. DRM and IMSA had different engine regulations, so beating 935s in Germany and beating them in America isn't the same thing. Group 5 was overall stricter than GTX. It's possible they had different weight to displacement rules, tire limitations, etc. Beyond that, the Zakspeed Mustang GTX ended up having to race in GTP, so it was up against prototypes in both '81 and '82. The Zakspeed Capris were only up against Group 5 cars. The issue related to aero seems to be that the Division 1 Capri used ground effects and the Mustang didn't, more than a difference in drag. A similar thing happened in Japan, the Fuji Super Silhouette Series switched to Group C rules, this lead to Toyota and Nissan trying to compete with upgraded Group 5 cars briefly. It didn't last long and they switched to proper Group C cars once they could build them.
@SlowSonicBoom8 күн бұрын
@skaldlouiscyphre2453 That's not true, the Capri raced against prototypes as well. Even finishing 2nd behind the Ford C100 at Hockenheim. Also beating the Porsche 936 at the Nordschleife and winning the race, especially the 936 proves the rules were not that strict.
@skaldlouiscyphre24538 күн бұрын
@@SlowSonicBoom FWIW, the C100 was developed as a Group 6 car, and wasn't that strong when upgraded to Group C. The 936 was also a Group 6 car. When I say Group 5 was less strict than IMSA GTX what I mean is that GTX didn't have any requirements for Group 4 homologation. Group 5 and Group 6 raced against each other in some series, but that doesn't mean a Group 5 car can be made competitive with a Group C or GTP car. Group 6 cars had higher drag because they were open-top. Group 5 had less drag than Group 6, but more than Group C because of the production greenhouse. If the Capri could have been made competitive with Group C cars, why did Zakspeed eventually adopt the C1/4 and C1/8 (upgraded C100s)? Likewise, why did those Japanese examples quickly fail and get replaced by proper Group C cars? Also, what year and in which series (DRM or Interserie) did those Capri victories occur? I'd like to see what cars they were up against.
@ProjectFairmont8 күн бұрын
Those Roush IMSA GTO cars were actually remarkably sophisticated. The current Next Gen NASCAR cars finally adopted many of the things that made those old GTO class cars great; flat bottom, rear transaxle and low profile tires enabling larger brakes. Compared to the current GTD Pro Mustang, I don’t think the Roush car gives up much in terms of center of gravity and mechanical gripe.
