BYU gets blown out by each of these teams head to head in 1984...watch this game and then the 1984 Holiday Bowl and you'll see why. The game that really hurt the Pac 10 in 1984 was USC-Notre Dame. USC played pretty well for most of the season and won the conference, but when the Trojans lost to a mediocre Notre Dame squad late in November it damaged the Pac 10's reputation. If USC had beaten Notre Dame, I think the voters would have been more likely to acknowledge the quality of the Pac 10, and Washington accordingly would have been awarded the national title.

@@christopherfoote4643 - how does it feel to be dumber than a bag of rocks? It's embarrassing to even try to argue the case for BYU in 84. No, they didn't play a lot of good teams in 84. They played a long list of mediocre to poor teams, including Colorado St. They barely escaped a 3 point victory against Wyoming at home? And they were lucky to beat a 6-5 Michigan team in their weak ass bowl game played almost two weeks before the real bowl games were played on Jan 1. The fact that the Holiday Bowl was played on ESPN, on a Friday night meant most college football fans didn't even watch the mediocre game between two mediocre teams. And the only BYU wins that game is because of the horrible officiating by the homer refs in the Holiday Bowl. Beau Schembechler commented after the game - BYU "should be outlawed" because it was "the worst holding team in the United States of America" (BYU had no holding penalties during the game). embarrassing

I remembered watching this game. The 1984 college football season spurred the controversy over who was the real #1 team in the nation? It was a strange college football season. What pushed BYU into the discussion after they were ranked #1 in both polls was their impressive victory over Pitt to start the college season and remaining undefeated. Meanwhile Oklahoma inexplicably lost to Kansas (a basketball school), and a tie against Texas (not good). And the so-called college experts fell asleep on how good the Washington Huskies were. Washington had a bad habit of inexplicably losing games they should have won throughout the 1980's, Washington was indeed one of the best college football programs in the 1980's, just like OU and UM. It's just that east coast media bias favored teams such as OU, Nebraska, and UM which often set the tone for ignoring how good some west coast college football programs truly were such as Washington. The 1985 Orange Bowl was a good competitive game, but I saw this game as a Washington victory from a mile away. Washington was more of a complete team with a pro-style system. OU was a great program too, but they were totally outclassed in the 4th quarter which made the difference in this bowl game. The good news about this bowl season was that college football doesn't have a playoff system if it weren't for the controversial 1984 college football season. I know 2003 was just as controversial too, but this was the game that started serious talks about a college football playoff format.

@@christopherfoote4643 I have a question for you. Not a biased question, but a methodically thought out one. I will not deny that BYU deserved to be ranked No. 1 because they were undefeated that year. And BYU defeated a PItt team, a perennial national power at that time and ranked No. 3 to start out that 1984 Season. If you were the AD of the University of Washington, would you choose a Holiday Bowl game pitting a bragging rights game against BYU? Or would you pick the Orange Bowl, a New Year's Top Tier Bowl game which paid out millions of dollars to each team.? Let's be real, when it comes to big business which college football is, the UofW would be foolish choosing the Holiday Bowl (a low tier Bowl invite) against the Orange Bowl (a major New Year's Day Bowl Game). BYU could not help but play in the Holiday Bowl. The conference BYU was affiliated with was contractually obligated to participate in that game. Whereas, UofW had options on top of the fact that the PAC10 regardless of opinions, was a major conference (still is renamed the PAC12). It was a strange Bowl Season that year and the perfect scenarios occurred, OU lost a game. And the UofW lost a game late in the season to I think USC which denied them winning the PAC10 conference and playing in the Rose Bowl. Despite that, the UofW was still very highly ranked due to many top ranked college football teams losing one or more games with the exception of BYU remaining unbeaten throughout the season. The UofW may have been ranked no. 2 in some polls. But UofW was consistently ranked No. 3 in most polls. And of course, BYU was ranked No. 1 due to them as I already said being undefeated. Yes, the age-old argument stated that BYU played in a weaker conference. I'm not knocking that because BYU also played major schools every year. BYU earned a reputation as a respectable national power during the 1980's. Don't let this fall on UofW because Barry Switzer was the head coach that made the argument that BYU wasn't worthy of being considered national champions that year. I remembered that the AP and UPI (coaches' poll) presses made an ultimatum to OU after Switzer's rant in which for OU to be considered national champions, they had to beat the UofW by at least a minimum of two touchdowns or more. Which of course didn't happen. After UofW won, Barry Switzer stated that he would endorse UofW to be considered No. 1 that year. Of course, it wasn't enough as both polls declared BYU national champions. In the end, the UofW made the right choice. It's a no brainer considering the Orange Bowl over the Holiday Bowl every single time. Only die-hard fans wished that BYU and the UofW played against each other that year. Would BYU have won that game? Maybe. BYU was most certainly not a push over that year. But we'll never know. In the end, like we see it today, major college football is big business! Let's state facts, the Holiday Bowl would have been a losing situation for UofW. Because if somehow UofW beat BYU, OU would have heavily lobbied to be considered national champions if they beat their Orange Bowl opponent. College football and politics have always had similar ingredients. It's still like that to this day.

@@darrenpeterson1092 not necessarily. Brigham Young won an NCAA title. That's partly because Michigan went 5-0 to begin 1985. Admittedly it's retroactive. But it's a legitimate title claim. Shared with Iowa. Iowa and Brigham Young played in a Holiday Bowl. They tied. Brigham Young and Iowa were comparable programs. In 1984 Iowa was 8-4-1 and Brigham Young went 12-0-1. That's comparable because of SOS. Collectively Brigham Young was 12-0-1 (1984 & 1996). That's a co-championship. Washington was 10-1-1 collectively. Tied Brigham Young. They're co-champions. IMO

BYU would have whipped both of these teams. Both of them had weak pass defense.
