This had to be one of the best Husky Bowl games ever, to watch...lots of excitement created by both teams.

I was working for NBC and was fortunate to go to the game as we broadcast it. At the NBC after party Don James heard I went to UW and he gave me an autographed ball from the whole team, which I still have today. (2022)

Even though I believe it's possible for the nation's best team to come from a weaker conference, Washington should have been voted the National Champion for this season. I will say however, that BYU had some bad luck with PITT in its non-conference schedule starting the year ranked in the top-10 but ended up with a .500 record.

I remember watching this great game! As usual, 'experts' picked Oklahoma over Huskies..😊!! Stupid Sooner schooner penalty, too😂 Transfered to UW that year, also.

BYU was a joke as a national championship, they barely beat a 6 and 5 Michigan team in the holiday bowl. Only the pull it out in the final minutes of the game. Washington was clearly the national championship that year but only because BYU's coach was retiring after 20 years

So Bob Costas wrapped up the other New Year's Day bowls by showing a Houston highlight from the Cotton Bowl and OSU highlights from the Rose Bowl... even though both of those teams LOST their bowl games. That doesn't make a bit of sense. Doug Flutie (i.e. the current Heisman winner at the time) threw 3 touchdowns in the Cotton Bowl and... nothing? Way to always be pathetic in college football coverage, NBC.

Sad part the Winner should have been National Champ. But they picked BYU that had a schedule that was so sickly weak. Every team in the WAC had 4 loses except BYU. WEAK WEAK. Played a 6 and 5 Michigan in the BYU Bowl (Holiday Bowl) . That is what brought about the change in college football. Started a computer rankings of teams because of that farce.

Nope! Nebraska?
@Tubewings6 ай бұрын
@@joeppg Actually, Oklahoma was in four straight Orange Bowls from 1978 to 1981 (winning the last three) as well as 1985 (this one) to 1988 (going 2-2). Nebraska was in three straight from 1971 to 1973 (winning all three), again from 1982 to 1984 (winning only the 1983 game), and would later be in four straight from 1992 to 1995 (only winning the last one).

@@TubewingsRemember in 1978 they were the opponent. Nebraska was the Big 8 Champion that year and as such got the automatic bid to the Orange Bowl.
