Neat seeing more involved repairs happening here on the channel and it’s interesting to see things you won’t likely get the chance to work on yourself from the inside out.

Hi, just wanted to say huge thanks for such a great and helpful video. Fixed my broken odometer after 2 years of just assuming it would never work again! Thank you.

Aw I’m glad! Not to toot my own horn but I have a lot of fixes/ upgrades/ jobs documented on my TT page. I’m the same name on there! Also if you need any help feel free to DM me on insta! Same name there as well. I could also point you in the direction of the people who help me ( virtually ) if you need extra help!

Thanks for making the video. You guys look like to had fun! I've done this job before and what I like most about your video is the part about lining up the pin with it's hole on the other side of the gear. I think I missed that the first time around. And don't reset the trip meter when the car is in motion!
@vonwesty35442 жыл бұрын
There's a 3D printed component that fits on the side of the speedometer where those gears are that keeps them in place and engaged. You can get it from one of the vendors that make 3D printed parts for Vanagons.

Yes from uniwerks!! I have a cart of stuff I’m ordering from them. Ill keep it tucked away for when this happens again and I’ll put it on. Lots of great items for vanagons on that site!

Thanks for this! Gave me some much needed inspiration to take a nosey behind the dash on our van - turns out the speedo cable needs replacing so more work to do! :)

Super helpful Thank you. I applied this video to my 1985 Audi as a lot of it is cross-reference.

Awesome I’m glad it helped! There’s a lot of similarities between the VW’s and Audi. Not quite sure what the connection is maybe audi owns VW…. ? Some of my parts have the audi logo on them!

I wonder what’s making your speedometer axel pop out. Could something be loose? I think this has happened before.

Great! Did you figure it out? It is involved. But wow; it feels rewarding when you’re all done!

@@handyhopey1404 someone had been in there before and there was much damage to the surround plastic so the clocks were actually loose in there. I used tape tech to hold the clock in place and weirdly the odo started working. Will see whether it lasts.... Thanks again!

Great find, I suspect that the "trip"odometer would work the same?? My speedo is good, my trip meter is off.... mine is an '84

Thanks! Definitely feels good to do it myself. I tell myself I like it because I have to do it anyways. No one else knows how to around me 😂 nothing like that for motivation! Thanks for watching!

OMG your dash is in amazing shape. Also I bet you have a rebuilt speedometer, that lime green wheel is not original, my odometer stopped working because that wheel ( white on my van) cracked. Check the samba site n find $30 new wheel, lots of cussing later get the wheel in N dont break anything putting it back together. so nice to have an odometer so you dont get stranded cause of the horrible gas gauge on these vans. Owning a van teaches you 3 things 1) how to be a mechanic 2) how to surf internet for parts and tips to fix stuff 3) How to drive slow and rejoice when your trip is
