Vanagon owners become good mechanics, otherwise they'd go broke. Generally, Vanagons are easy to work on. Most parts are still available and affordable. There is a large community that shares repair experiences. Thanks for the odometer tip.

Thank you.. your comments about 'thingies' really speaks to me. I am hopeful that once I work out how to take the dash apart that my fix will be this easy.

If it slid off once, it will eventually slide off again - usually hairline crack in the gear.

That is a very smooth running van

my greenish gear is cracked, i pushed it back into place but it only works for about 2 miles. dose anyone have the part number or a way to fix it? great video and thank you for the help.

I feel like there should be some way to add a rubber band or something to wrap around that plastic piece to keep it in place.

Also “fixed” mine like this. Unfortunately it won’t last more than a couple of months.

Has anyone tried glueing the gear on? One other tip I learned the hard way don’t reset the trip while the van is in motion, after so many times it destroys the gears for the trip and odometer.

My odometer wasn't working, and this fixed it! Thanks for posting. I followed the Combe Valley Campers 'HOW TO REMOVE (and refit) THE DASHBOARD IN A VW T3' vid to access the odometer. I'm a total noob to all this stuff and it was easy anyway.

I also did a dash restore and removal video. It's one of the scarier things to do but it's not that difficult. The scariest part is once you have it removed you're seeing all these wires and crazy things going on. But if you like to clean it's a great opportunity LOL

I got the same problem will try and lubricate using WD40 silicon spray I’ve noticed your odometer reading is 148,000 they all seem to have this problem around that mileage, if I can’t get working or becomes a regular thing then I may get a digi fizz

Great video thanks. What is that thing clipped on under the tachometer that looks like a microphone?
@smidgelife Жыл бұрын
Thank you very much, yes it's a microphone for the Bluetooth.
@jeffreymartin3605 Жыл бұрын
@@smidgelife Ah so that mic wire connects to your car stereo for phone calls and you hear the other party via the car stereo speakers? Does it have any other purpose?
@smidgelife Жыл бұрын
Correct no that's the only purpose just for phone calls.

Did I miss the fix? Looks like you just pushed it back on. I'm looking for a way to secure it
@smidgelife6 ай бұрын
I just pushed it back on. But, I'd for sure use something to secure it. I sold my van about 2 years ago now. Best of luck.

Is it still working? I have the same problem but my odometer is different. Cannot get it fixed. I got it fixed and working but it didn't last very long, like 500 miles.
@smidgelife Жыл бұрын
Yeah might eventually came loose I think there's a way to secure it so it would actually work I just pushed it back in but there must be a way maybe a rubber band I don't know. I can tell you I did pay for a furbished one that one of the other primary estores provided and the only lame part is you cannot change the miles. So the miles have to stay at 00000. Meaning if you had 400,000 mi on your vehicle and bought a new speedometer... It's going to go back to zero. Which is really strange to be honest and not something I like because it also gets flagged when you sell the vehicle.

I did the same think yo fix my odometer…unfortunately the small gear is cracked so keeps sliding off. Oh well.
