It is a heavily facelifted escort MK3. Nice car for sure. I am surprised that they were offering the ability to put an ABS and in the same time seatbelts in the backseat weren't standard even in GHIA and XR3i. Of course in many countries including Greece during the 80s the seatbelts in the backseat weren't obligatory. Nevertheless in the same period some car manufacturers like Volvo, Saab, BMW, Audi and Mercedes offering their cars with standard seatbelts in the backseat even in the greek car market. In Greece most of Escorts had the 1.3 litre petrol engine with the L equipment level. The 3door and 5door hatchbacks were big sellers...

I thought the “180” mph reference was to the wind speed?

This is a very interesting video that brought back many good and happy memories as I owned one of them. I had a May 1986 model Escort 1.6 GL 5 dòor in gold. It was a very comfortable and reliable car to own and drive on long and short journeys.

My maths teacher also had a new ford Orion Ghia injection in black he bought new in 1986: apparently they were as fast as a xr3i but cheaper to insure .

At that time in Australia we had the Mazda sourced Ford Laser rather than the Escort. I don't recall any three door hatchback versions, and certainly there was no wagon in the range. They came in L, GL, and Ghia models. My youngest brother owned a red 1984 model Ford Laser Ghia. Luxury! I drove a 1983 Daihatsu Charade five door hatchback at that time. The Laser Ghia was much more refined.

In October 1988, equipment was upgraded to include electric front windows on the GL, another useful feature found on many Granadas.🙃

In the '80s and '90s, Ford were many miles behind with their gearboxes. Four-speed gearboxes were still being fitted to the entire Ford range in the early '80s. Five speed became an option on the upper half of the whole range from late 1982 to coincide with the Sierra's introduction, but until then, your recently-introduced Capri 2.8 injection still came with only a four speed. Even more ridiculously, Ford carried on fitting four-speed gearboxes to their 1.3 Escort base models until late 1992 K-reg when they introduced the facelifted 'smiley-mouth' mk5.

Yes driving lamps & alloys always an option (XR3/XR3i) even though almost all opted for them. Case of if seen driving a XR3i without (even though the steel wheels were wider so better grip footprint) image of people know skimped on options - the lighting at night though without driving lamps was dire!!

My second car purchased in spring 1997 was a 1986 D registration 1.4 GL in silica gold. It was alright. Really wanted either a Vauxhall Astra mark 2 or a Rover 213 but due to a lack of time and patience the Escort fitted the bill. Disappointed that it lacked central locking but it did have ABS. It kicked in a few times as a result of my own foolishness.

Indeed these Escorts (and Orions) were everywhere here too, I guess they were good cars. For me though, the Mk3 looks somehow nicer, this facelifted Escort has kind of "serious" look at the front end. Original Mk3 looks a bit more friendly, but maybe it's just me :D As for 4 speed manual transmission, even in 1988 when my dad bought new Opel Kadett E sedan with 1,6 engine, it had 4 speed manual transmission. Probably just about last years when 4 speed gearboxes were available, before everything went for 5 speed. I guess the same idea has been done even more recently, as my pretty much entry level 2016 Kia Rio 1,2 LX has 5 speed manual gearbox, but bigger 1,4 engines had 6 speed manual or automatic gearbox. I test drove the fancy Kia Rio 1,4 EX Premium Pack with 6 speed manual transmission before buying this 1,2 LX, it's been just fine for me :)

It was an improvement over the Mk3 Escort with nicer more attractive looks, smoother defined lines, and slightly better equipment levels on the replacement Mk4 Escort. I'd be happy to have the Popular 1.6D as it contains just the things I need - an AM radio, and the basics along with the economic diesel. At least it gets the full heating and ventilation system common to all the Mk4 Escorts, rather than just the basic two heater linked outer vents which delivered warm air, and no centre vents that the Mk3 got.

My mum had an H reg XR3i which followed a D reg XR2 , she always preferred her XR2 which funnily enough after 5 years of my best mate nagging her she sold him it , anyway my mum says her XR2 was definitely quicker. She bought the XR2 at 18 months old and the XR3i was about 3 years old. The week ahe bought the XR3I she got nicked for speeding near Leeds Bradford airport when the copper walked up before seeing mum he said now then boyracer she was probably 54-55ish at the time and was gobsmacked at seeing my mum.

Very nice video, i do like the Escort MK4, i honestly didnt like it as much as the Escort MK3 because to me it seemed like they tried too much to push the design language from the Granada into the Escort and it didnt quite fit in my opinion as well as in the Granada. The small stubby stalks for the indicator and windscreen wipers, i was never a fan of those, even in the Granada to be honest. The rest of the car was nice, My personal choice would have been a 1.6GL as the insurance would have been cheaper but also it has everything you pretty much want in it. The Popular models were also used as Mobility vehicles to be adapted for those with disabilities. My neighbour had one on the mobility scheme and the models were always the popular model variant. I do like the Ghia convertible but the model they used on the TV show Dempsey and Makepeace back in the mid 80s was i think the XR3i version so that one was seen as being more sporty and the one to have. The 1.3 engined versions i remember being used for a lot of driving schools and other large contracts so maybe it was a tax thing they were still offered alongside the 1.4? Nice comments and again a well produced video.

Friends of mine , in Denmark, bought a used Ford Escort Ghia 1.3.....surprised that they made 1.3 ghia. Wondered, You had no turbo version , in that brochure. ?

@@Bonzoguy66 If I recall correctly it was possible to choose a 1989 or 1990 Escort and Orion Ghia in the UK with a 1.3 litre engine option. Edited to add - the RS Turbo never appeared in these types of brochures for some reason.

I think because that was an RS model it would've had its own brochure as it was only available at RS-certified dealers.

Excellent video and congratulations on 2k, can you feature some of the Ford Orion specs and special editions. I'd of rathered the Orion 1.6i Ghia or the 1600E over the XR3i Escort.
