I have an 86 LX for anyone having this issue and you have checked your sending unit and the gauge is still showing an incorrect fuel level I found another cause for it. I removed the instrument cluster and found that the back of the gauges had rusted some water or something must of gotten in and was keeping the contacts from functioning correctly. So since I couldn't afford a new gauge I removed the clusters and cleaned them and the ribbon with PB Blaster absolutely soaked it and cleaned the ribbon and the guages and low and behold it turned on also restored lights to some of the dash lights that had ceased functioning. So one more thing to check it's a bit of a pain in the ass to remove the ribbons holding the cluster in place but if you don't have the cash to pay someone to fix it or you're bored and feeling productive it's worth a look you never know.

I’m in NC too and I’m having the same problem with my foxbody mustang fuel pump not turning on when the switch is turn on. Where are you located in nc

Did you ever figure out what the problem was? I also have an 86 and the fuel gauge never worked since I got it. I recently replaced the fuel pump and sending unit, car starts but the fuel gauge doesn't work. I also need to replace the tank because the baffle is loose and is possibly damaging the parts I replaced. Could be the problem for me or the new unit I bought from LMR doesn't work because I did the same trouble shooting method and the gauge moves so the wiring is good.

Got a similar issue rewired using a ron francis kit on my 82. Deleted alot anmd kept the cluster simple.. Got 10ohms when i check my sending unit which should be full.. However it shows 3/4 full on my gauge. I know ive filled her cause ive seen some gas come out the filler. Any ideas is it worth dropping the tank and checking sending unit despite me having the 10omhs?
