How to fix a Ford fuel gauge that always says empty and has the low fuel warning light on. The anti-slosh module is often to blame. This procedure was done on a 1990 Taurus SHO but should work on many Ford cars and trucks

Just tried this on a 1993 Ford Ranger. Worked perfect. I had already bought a new fuel pump but had'nt installed it yet. I only hooked up the connector in order to test the gauge to see if the new sending unit would fix the problem but it didn't. found your video & gave it a try. AWESOME. I'm taking my fuel pump back right now. thanks a bunch.

for those that cant get their gauge fixed. start with a full tank of gas and your trip gauge set to 000 then drive 50-100 miles and refill the tank. take the miles on your trip gauge and divide by the amount of gallons used. that will be your average mpg. find out how large your fuel tank is. say 13.7 gal tank and 21.846 mpg. multiply those and in this instance the total average miles per tank would be 299.2902. so about every 250 miles in this example would be safe to refill without getting stranded. hope this helps someone

Eskeetit Gang welp I bypassed the slosh detector... my slosh detector actually had a burnt and melted spot on it tho. I made a resistance substitution switch. Found the wire under the hood that comes from sending unit to the cluster and that's how I figured out the slosh detector was bad but it was my sending unit As well. the only thing is I try'd to get out of it cheap and rebuilt my sending unit with parts from a newer truck that I had just stripped and junked and it worked for a couple days but I did somthing wrong it died so I'm back to putting 5 6 gallons in and going 70 miles lol. But ur's being stuck on full all the time..... hmmm when I was experimenting with mine the only way I could get mine on full was by grounding out the wire that sends the fuel level message to the gauge so your getting grounded out somewhere I would say. but I think the slosh detector could cause that aswell if it not working properly so try bypassing that taking the bed off to get to the sending unit sucks hope that helps!!

Thanks for the video. Mine is a 1990 E-150 Luxury Van and the Anti Slosh Unit is different than yours, it's a little rectangular shaped can that sorta looks like a mini metal capacitor with rivets on top that make contact with the plastic circuit board, Not sure how you're supposed to replace that unit since it's riveted (I tried to unscrew the rivet looking discs thinking that they may be threaded but they didn't budge), I soldered a piece of wire across those two rivets and now my gas gauge works again. The gauge doesn't move fast anyway so it seems like that anti slosh unit was pretty much useless anyway. And what a pain in the butt it is to replace burned out bulbs in the dash since I have to crawl under the van after jacking it up to give the speedometer cable some slack before I can remove the cluster, no way to get my hand under the dash either. Poor design on that one eh?! Thanks again. :-)
@AerialPhotogGuy7 жыл бұрын
Uh......not sure why I didn't check the other gauges after doing this fix but the temp gauge and the oil pressure gauges are now pegging out. It turns out that the can looking thing I soldered is actually the instrument voltage regulator. Also, the circuit board that you taped over is a newer style of instrument voltage regulator as well. It's not an Anti Slosh Circuit. The gas gauge has an internal Anti Slosh circuit in it and that's a Ford part (can't be purchased After Market, at least I haven't been able to find one). So, if your other gauges are not indicating properly, it's the voltage regulator being disabled. That regulator pulses a 5 volt signal to the temp sensor and the oil pressure sensor and maybe the gas sending units but I'm sure sure yet about the gas gauge sending unit yet.

comicbookprodigy995 You and epoweredrc both probably need a float for the fuel tank. My local Dealership sells just the float for around $14.00. They are made of a thin metal, or plastic, and will crack. This allows gas to enter them, and show a constant empty as the float sinks. Hope that helps.
