In Episode 53 of ‘Cars, Shops & Collections’ we visit Ron Riles to see his 1986 Monte Carlo SS Aerocoupe - 1 of 200!
Ron also has a 1987 Camaro IROC-Z and a 1974 Ford Pinto Wagon (A Pinto that comes with a twist). We filmed ALL of Ron’s collection but unfortunately we had an issue with our equipment and lost half of our footage. That footage included Ron’s Camaro and Ford Pinto…. So episode 53 focuses on Ron’s Monte Carlo and we will soon be returning to capture his IROC-Z and Pinto!
Ron’s collection is fascinating and so is Ron! Ron spent 23 years in the U.S. Air Force retiring as a Chief Master Sergeant in 2004. Then after retiring he moved to Hawaii and worked on the series Hawaii Five-O for eight seasons as a stand-in double. We thank Ron for his service to our country and for showing us collection of wicked cars!
The Monte Carlo SS Aerocoupe features a distinctive sloping rear window and muscular body. Only 200 of these were made in 1986 to satisfy NASCAR homologation requirements. This Aerocoupe is rare and in impeccable condition. I hope you enjoy this walk around and test drive!

My dad (genuinely the best dad in the world) had that car for the first couple years I was alive but my grandparents sold it on him because it just sat in their garage for a while after I was born and it wasn’t until recently that I learned they sold such a special car on him, I really can’t wait I til I make enough money to get that car back in his driveway

Remember finding this car and falling in love after trying to find a 1970 Monte Carlo my grandpa had growing up. He was hoping to pass it down but money was tight so he had to sell it but I’m hoping to find one for myself someday

My older brother served in the US Army in the 90's and when he got discharged he drove back home from Fort Bragg, North Carolina to Los Angeles, California with a 1984 Blue Monte Carlo SS and made it all the way! He gave it to my Dad and we loved it for years since we grew up in the 80's with his 1982 Chevrolet Monte Carlo that my Dad engine swapped the V6 to an IROC Camero 350 V8! My brother was in need and my Dad gave him back the Monte Carlo SS and my brother sold it. Biggest mistake ever! My Dad is still to this day pissed off that my older brother sold it! Great memories and great times cruising around that mean Monte Carlo SS in LA! We may end up getting one again....

This is a really nice looking SS Monte Carlo. I was a teenager when these came out. I always liked the 1987 and 1988 more because of the rear tail lights. The reverse light was flush with the rest of the tail light in 1987-88. The 1984 to 1986 tail lights had the reverse light tucked in. I remember when the aero coupe came out and it was not well received at the time. Dealers were offering discounts on them in order to sell them , same for the 1986 Pontiac Grand Prix 2+2 aero coupe. I believe the reason the regular Monte Carlo SS sold better was the access to the trunk , the aero coupe had a much smaller access.

These 86 coupes were only built at the Atlanta plant and had quite a few things that were changed for the 87 model year to speed up production and simplify things a bit. An 86 is really rare and most accurate estimates seem to indicate about 75 or so left in the world. By Chevrolet standards that is incredibly rare.

@@CarsShopsAndCollections You did a nice job. Wish the owner had mentioned what a huge uproar this car caused at the 86 Daytona 500 when it debuted. The Ford and other GM teams were absolutely livid it was allowed in. And Geoff Bodine won the 500 in an Aerocoupe, to make matters worse.

I learned how to drive in my parents' '86 Monte Carlo SS (not an Aerocoupe). The interior looked almost exactly the same except ours had the shifter on the column. Overall, a good car with some good memories.

You can get a Goodyear outline white tire currently which was the original equipment look, but they’re like $450 per tire. I just put BFG’s on my ‘87 Aerocoupe because it’s a serviceable survivor.
