He was as fast as Senna, as handsome as Cevert, he held his own against champions more than once. He could easily have been champion if given the right car. His biggest fault was he was he was more like Fittipaldi, Hunt, Stewart, when F1 was growing into the age of Prost, Senna, and Mansell. He didn’t fit in.

It was just timing 84 really was the last chance for Lotus before their downward spiral and he just wasn't good enough to get the most out of the car, his enthusiasm faded by 86

DeAngelis was as good as anyone on his day. However, there were very few days like that for him. He was a good and steady driver, but not elite. He wasn't World Champion material but a good points scorer. Senna's arrival proved that. He was basically a good #2 driver in reality. He left Lotus because he knew Senna was the man and he would never be #1 there. His move to Brabham when they were beginning to tank, was a little sad. It kind of reminded me of Peter Revson leaving McLaren at the end of 1973 to join Shadow for 1974. If Revson just stayed with the Yardley McLaren satellite team, he would have been much better off.

By all respect for De Angelis...But he wasn't the same class as Senna... The 85 season as the drive longside together in the Lotus team: Points: 38 Senna, 33 De Angelis, Pole Positions: 7 Senna, 1 De Angelis, Qualifying overall: Senna-De Angelis=13-3. Victories: 2 Senna, 1 De Angelis, Podium: 6 Senna, 4 De Angelis..

@@paulo9504 If Mansell was champion material, then so was De Angelis, who soundly outperformed Mansell in 1981, 1982, and 1984. The only season Mansell won (1983), De Angelis had 12 mechanical failures in 15 races.
@Mark-zk3gu Жыл бұрын
@@markuseggstein8349 That's true, De Angelis wasn't as good as Senna, but he scored 33-38 in points against Senna and 3-5 in races where neither driver had a mechanical failure, which is a damn good effort. He was in between the Senna-Prost tier and the Mansell-Piquet tier. As was Keke Rosberg.

I'd like to think that if Elio lived, he could have been a future champion. He had a good way with the cars he drove from the footage I've watched, and he proved himself as a race winner. The simple fact that he could match Ayrton Senna should be an indication that he was a good driver.

When Senna wasn't retiring from races in 1985, he usually owned DeAngelis. During the second half of 1985, Senna basically destroyed DeAngelis. There is a reason Elio didn't stick around at Lotus.

Being in the process of watching all F1 races from late 1960s, and now at the 1986 season, I was very sad to hear this. De Angelis was a very good, well behaved driver, and seemed to be a good guy in general. Sad to see him go so young and needlessly. RIP.

So sad. RIP. I just happened to know him from a history of F1 drivers' strike in Kyalami that he was the one who paled the piano to entertain himself and the other drivers in a conference hotel. The night when almost all drivers stayed united to spend the night together in the same place.

Interesting, here they say he died due head and chest injuries but later years it was written he was poisoned by smoke and extinguisher gases.
@paulo95042 жыл бұрын
That is correct. His physical injuries were fairly light. He had a broken collarbone and some minor burns to his back. He died needlessly because there was no proper emergency services set up for a test session.

An bit of trivia for anyone who may be interested; the interviewer was Paul McDowell. Viewers in the UK (who were youngsters in the 80s) may remember him better as a presenter on Newsround. The fact that he's on the Breakfast Time sofa here indicates that he may well have been holiday cover.

testing sessions were more properly marshalled afterwards, if I remember remotely accurately - the issue was that there just wasn't enough people at the track

If a scheming and ruthless Ayrton Senna hadn't been insistent on Elio De Angelis being traded from the team so that he could be number one driver in 1986, this never would have happened. Karma came around to bite him on the ass eight years later.

If you'd use a better video recorder you might be able to avoid this kind of distortion. The tapes aren't the problem 90% of the time
