I'm 37 and lusted after all those 80s 90s cars even at like 7 years old, i could identify every car on the road by it's headlights in the dark, can't really do that these days, too many similar brand faces on multiple models🙄 Nice to see an unmolested 5turbo The faded plastics of the bodykit on the wheelarches reminds me of the arch plastics on my 2002 phase 1 kangoo trekka 4x4 😂

My pal got really into these, he had phase 1, phase 2 raider, phase 2 dimma kitted, he even fully converted a extra van. He still has a load of parts in he's garage, drives a clio f1 these days...

I used to do a lot of conversions on these back in the day. The "APC system" of a scrapped Saab 900 turbo could be retrofitted into just about any Turbo car as it was a standalone system. I used to fit Saab APC to R5 GTT's to give them electronic boost control. Worked really well and improved the turbo response massively. Plus the added knock control would protect the engine. Biggest issue on these like the R18 and Fuego turbos was petrol boiling in the carb after giving it a bootfull. Making hot starts a nightmare. Renault added a carb cooling fan on the Ph2 ones i seem to remember.

My wife's 1.0 szturbo Suzuki Swift has 110 bhp and 910kg. Reminds me of a slightly more refined GT turbo from back in the day. Great fun.

Loved throwing the ass out on these. Most drivable FWD I’ve had, so easy to control.

@@RetroRatchet Ground up rebuild. Just silicone hoses and a light jetting. It's pretty standard. It used to be a bright yellow Ali-G MaxPower car before the rebuild! The owener should have the magazine.

It did tramline on uneven road surfaces. Clutch was very heavy because the cable was rerouted from the left side of the engine to the RHS for UK cars. Main issue I had was overheating in heavy traffic, vaporising the fuel in the carburettor. The fuel filter also needed changing regularly if you drove it hard! Grip was great, on limit it would go into a 4 wheel drift ultimately.

Nice. I remember there was a white ph2 up the road from my parents house. Back in 87-88. I spent hours….days…staring at it. We had the standard 5 GTL and the gt turbo just looked amazing. The body kit and size of the wheels.😮 now they look tiny of course but back then of course it seemed wild. By the way that was the ph2 with the GT Turbo along the side

I had the Charade Gtti. Regularly beefing with the R5's. But back then there was no tuning with the Charade so most R5's I came across were boosted to death. But standard R5's we were always even. Good times.

I had in 1987 a Phase 1 Renault 5 GT turbo, in purl white (C42WOY). Understated design except for the fake side intakes on the rear wheel trims, compared to the Phase 2: which had an additional 5 7:13 bhp.

My second car back in 96. Saved 4 months for one after a tour in the Falklands. Had one in black. I managed to kill the engine on the M5. New one put in and flogged it a bit later. My friend ran a phase 2 at the time so fond memories of the little races we had. I’d pull on him initially and he would reel me in.

My mate had one, he loved it, he had it for years with no problems, he only did 2 things, which you can still do today which you can gain an extra 3/7 bhp more, he changed the panel air filter to a K&N and put 2 bottles of Redex cleaner in a full tank of fuel every 6 months, we had 5.2 down to 4.7 seconds 0-60 on this little turbo car, it was rapid. Redex is a reddish solution cleaner and it burns away black carbon sitting around inside your engine, also cleans fuel pipes Redex has been used in NAS car racing touring car racing even the spitfires had it back in the 40s, you also gain mpg and bhp within a few days, a clever solution 0-60 will be better you can gain between 1-3seconds and good for your car is about to go for an mot, put 2 bottles in a full tank of fuel 2 weeks before your mot test guaranteed the emissions will be lower too, works every time👍🏻

Looked at a 5 brochure a few years ago. Does it have that fancy “infra red remote control central door locking” feature? I’m guessing not as I didn’t see the receiver. How about that for a nerdy question lol.

Great Cars. I did hear some owners wire up a second cooling fan due to overheating issues. The hot hatch I've always wanted (and nearly got years ago until Insurance stopped me) is the Mark 3 Escort XR3i in Red.

I have owned a 1973 5TL and a 1976 5TL and loved them both. In December 1986 I bought a new 5GT Turbo but only kept it for 9 months. I traded it in for a Toyota MR2 Mk 1. The reasons I didn't like the Renault were 1) It had a carburettor, not fuel injection and the engine was difficult to re-start when hot. 2) It didn't have a sunroof or aircon and was black so it was very hot in the summer.3) The steering was heavy at low speeds - no power steering, wide tyres and small steering wheel so it was hard to park. 4) There was tremendous torque steer so if you accelerated hard the car would pull to one side and this had to be corrected.5) Poor build quality. For all those reasons I bought the Toyota MR-2 which was superior in every department.

After market intercoller. No dump valve on that you can see where it should be in the charge pipe and it’s blanked off. All you’re hearing is compressor stall through the induction filter
