It wasn’t so long ago that the once-fearsome lawyer Roy Cohn and his infamous career seemed destined to be no more than a colorful footnote to history. Cohn was a gaudy character, for sure - a hustler, a fixer, and an amoral hypocrite of incredible drive - whose life as a closeted man ended in tragic comeuppance when he died of AIDS in 1986, insisting to the last that he couldn’t possibly be dying of that gay disease.
Tony Kushner wrote a vivid version of him into Angels in America, and that might have been the last word on Cohn if not for the fact that, in midlife, he had met and started giving legal and how-to-get-away-with-it life advice to a then-young Donald Trump, helping mold him into the man who became president.

@@rubaidaallen2764 Yes, he was so great in the part that he threw off the play’s center of gravity. You began to half admire his ‘ruthless to the grave’ character, which I don’t think is what Kushner had in mind.

He was the chosen mouth piece of the NY crime bosses and became Trumps mentor to a degree when the Donald was an upstart from New Jersey and a new kid on the block not knowing the inner workings of the city , showing him how the city officialdom , boroughs with its mayors, its regulations, its politics and murkier underbellies works . He opened many doors to Trump. Hell, Cohn was visiting presidents in the white house when Trump was a greenhorn . Trump , after Cohns passing , was often overheard when he was in a tight spot or a squeeze 'Where is my Roy Cohn!'

Roy Cohn was so dishonest he made dishonest lawyers look honest. He wasn't dishonest. Honesty and dishonesty weren't in his brain. He had no use of such things as honesty or dishonesty. He did what worked. Lying worked. He wasn't just dishonest, he was the type of person who would would send two people, the Rosenbergs, to their death, KNOWING they were not actively treasonous. He wanted them to die so he could make a name for himself and by crickey did it work. When a truck driver beeped at John Gotti, because Gotti had blocked an alleyway, Gotti beat the hell out of the truck driver. Roy Cohn represented John Gotti. He said the truck driver took out a crowbar from the back of his truck and came at Gotti with a furious menace. When Carlo Gambinos son was killed, the guy that got ordered to kill him was John Gotti. Cops arrested Gotti, they had him with blood and fingerprint evidence. Cohn threatened the witnesses by implication ("if yon wanna wake up tomorrow") in so many words, and boom, Gotti was acquitted.

The only thing Roy learned from Joe C was this "if your always attacking then you do not need to defend".... meaning if you are pushing yor arguement hard enough and the person is engaged in that arguement then you have won. You want to draw them into your arguement versus having them question the basis of the arguement. Just like pointing out communist were of purely a attacking nature, if you defended yourself by recognizing their arguement as valid then you lost. If a basis for a arguement isn't valid there is no reason to partake in the arguement. It's about framing the arguement or subject in your lens. You want to get people to look thru your looking glasses (your perspective) at the arguement which out them knowing your purposefully framing the arguement in your lens. Trying to prove your not a communist or proving you do not believe in the ideals set forth in communist literature is a broken arguement because how can you prove what ideas are in your head.... I think the Mccarthy Era stuff merely open Roy up to perception and how to control the narrative or outlooks on situations .

I was just reading the book Citizen Cohn last night (im still on the first chapter)stopped after the part where he was at his New Years eve party in 1986 he was really sick, and this one lady said people were astonished that he was able to stand up and be strong and take pictures with his friends and family even though he was sick. He seemed like a sick tough bastard because he died later on that same year. It was like 3:00 in the morning and I fell asleep with the book beside me.

Why do gays insist on outing other gays? It's a bizarre kind of persecution. Not every gay man wishes to be an activist and wear his sexuality on his sleeve. Not every gay man regards homosexuality as a social cause. Some prefer to keep their business to themselves, where it belongs.

Everyone should have their own privacy and make their own decisions about how they deal with their sexuality. Hey Irene. If you research into it, u'll find Roy Cohn certainly DIDN'T respect other people's privacy. If u & him were in a Court Case, he'd hire Private Detectives to dig up dirt on u, bug ur fone, surveillance u etc. All highly illegal stuff, & worse b/c he was a Lawyer. So against such a back drop, he forfeits the rite 2 any kindda privacy. Additionally, his being a closet homosexual had a direct effect on his character. He was filled with self-loathing & shame & his rage manifested itself in his super right-wing views & actions, his utter vindictiveness & loathing of anything considered fair, impartial or community-minded | He was human. But also a twisted, bitter, self-loathing sociopath. This sums him up: kzbin.info/www/bejne/o3OpgZesn76HepY

R E there is no evidence he illegally bugged anyone. He also never broadcasted other notable people’s private matters on national television. Besides, even if he did disregard others privacy (which I don’t think he did to the extent of this 60 minute episode), doing the same to him does not make you a better person than him.

@@re7416 Why let a spiteful cousin have the last word? Many of Cohn’s friends and family members defended him to the very end. Most of them are no longer around but they were interviewed by Nicholas von Hoffman who incorporated some of their testimony into Citizen Cohn, a fairly comprehensive biography that I think anyone who is interested in understand Cohn should read. Von Hoffman despised Cohn but at least tried, with some success, to appear impartial in penning Cohn’s biography. I wish you well as well.

I think they were all like that in the old days. People like Rock Hudson, mair Ed Koch and others look pretty manly, but they were also Psychopaths, sociopaths and creepy as hell. Someone who is effeminated or looking weak isn't necessarily homosexual. There are plenty of feminine men who are heterosexual.

THE ANCIENT EGYPTIANS STARTED SLAVERY, THE CONTINENT THAT INCUDES EGYPT AS A NATION STILL PRACTICES SLAVERY IN 2020, AND THE COUNTRIES THAT PRACTICE SLAVER TODAY HAVE LEADERS WHO ARE THE DESCENDANTS OF KINGS WHO SOLD PEOPLE TO THE EUROPEANS . I WANT TO CLEAR UP THE MISINFORMATION ABOUT HOW PEOPLE FROM THAT CONTINENT [ SADLY] WERE BROUGHT TO THE [ NEW WORLD ] IN SHACKLES. THE PEOPLE WHO [ SADLY] BOUGHT THE PEOPLE FROM KINGS OF THE [ VERY POOR SOULS] WHO WERE SLAVES. THESE VERY SADLY MIISFORTUNATE PEOPLE WERE NOT CHASED DOWN AND SHACKLED BY THE [ SLAVE BUYERS, BUT SOLD AS A PIECE OF GOLD WOULD BE SOLD] MY POINT IS THE EVIL ACT OF SLAVERY WAS STARTED BY [ THE BLOOD ANCESTORS OF THESE UNFORTUNATE SLAVES] AND THE BUYERS WERE JUST AS EVIL, AND THE SAD PART OF THIS EVIL IS THAT THE DECENDANTS OF SLAVE OWNERS DID NOT TAKE PART IN THIS [ EVIL] WHICH WAS STARTED BY THE [ PEOPLE OF THE CONTINENT] THAT THE VICTIMS OF THE [ EVIL SLAVE TRADE] LIVED. NO ONE JUST SAILED OVER TO THE CONTINENT OF AFRICA AND GRABBED PEOPLE AND TOOK THEM!!! EVIL KINGS SOLD PEOPLE TO THE FUTURE SLAVE OWNERS WHO THEN BROUGHT THEM TO THEIR [ ALREADY INHABITED] NEWLY DISCOVERED LANDS. I WANT TO EMPHASIZE [ THE ACT OF SLAVERY IS VILE AND IN HUMAN, AND WHETHER THE KINGS WHO SOLD THEM, OR THE PEOPLE WHO BOUGHT THEM, ARE ALL GUILTY OF THIS [ HORRIFIC, NIGHTMARISH SLAVERY, AND ALL THE PAIN AND SUFFERING BOTH PAST AND PRESENT CAUSED BY IT. I WILL CLOSE MY COMMENT BY SAYING [ MANKIND HAS BEEN VERY CRUEL TO EACH OTHER FOR MULTIPLE CENTURIES!!!!!!!!!! LET'S ALL TRY AND SHOW LOVE TO EACH OTHER, NO MATTER WHAT WE LOOK LIKE OR WHERE OUR ANCESTORS CAME FROM. [ GOD BLESS YOU ALL.

Robin Delancy his boyfriend peter Fraser said he knew Roy Cohn had worked behind the scenes to lobby for millions of dollars to be channeled into aids research. He just kept it hush hush for fear of being identified as an aids patient.

@Knuckle Game The press and health officials were all quiet about the rapid spread and created a shame based identity attached to those suffering with it. At the time it was called "Gay Related Cancer". Cohn was one of the first to receive AZT treatments and it kept him alive for a while. He never contributed information or support to those infected and he continued to go to bath houses and use male escorts knowing he was contagious. It's pretty well documented how he behaved during the epidemic in the 80's. I lived in New York in the 80's. It was a very scary time for everyone. I was 18 and AIDS shut down the "sex, drugs and rock&roll " culture pretty fast!
