1986 Vanagon Bostig Zetec Engine Conversion

We had one of those vanagons roll up into our shop here in SoCal with that same Zetec engine. Guy had purchased from out of state. He was looking to get it checked out and smogged at our shop. We had to give him the bad news that here in CA that engine is not a legal swap. Only a Subi is allowed. To this day we haven't seen him back, and not sure what he's done with the van.

Oh yeah, that’s the only downside to the Zetec swap. Even though it passes smog test with flying colors, for some reason CA as deemed the zetec swap illegal haha. Beats me.

Back in the day, I got a mailbox down in imperial county; with all the farm equipment, you license the vehicle as commercial and get a pass. I ran a LT1 in my AWD Astro Van for years, while working in Sandy Eggo, with zero smog certs 😉

I have a Zetec Vanagon as well. Are you able to provide any details on the cold air intake you used?

Does yours have the high clearance oil pan? How has it been doing after a year? Thanks for sharing the video. It seems like a great option but as already noted the 2 downsides - are the clearance and the CA swap legality. Although for me, it wouldn't be a problem.

What kinda Mpg that bad boy get?

15-25mpg. Varies greatly since it’s so heavy. So if you get used to accelerating slowly at stoplights/onto freeways then you’ll get 20-25 pretty easily.
