I have been a Pontiac fan since the mid 70s. I own a 1972 455HO , and have several blocks and other parts. My first legal car was a 1968 firebird. I went to the Pontiac dealer back in 1984 and almost bought a Fiero. The fastback are badass. Cool cars , I miss Pontiac , could you guys imagine what Pontiac could be doing today. Always were a step ahead.

They had some really bad ass cars they were talking about going into production with and then gm shut them down. Just like they were about to do with the feiro in the late 80’s. But gm put a stop to it because it was going to wipe the floor with the corvette and they didn’t want their sales to get hurt by it. They just couldn’t catch a break.

@@deezematz Even back in the early 70s Pontiac stuck with the muscle car when everyone else had anemic power. The 73-74 SD 455 was a hand built race engine, a good cam and carb is all it needed to scream. The factory cam and carb had to meet emissions so. 1964 GTO started it all. I can respect that.

the 88 GT was my absolute favorite - of course for good reasons. But we have a guy here in Oklahoma that rebuilds the 87 and 88 bodies and puts a GM Northstar Small Block V8 in them. They are quite fun from what I hear. 25K would get you in one back in the earlier 2000s. No idea if he is still doing them or not.

They were good cars I don't care what anyone says about them, and fun to boot, the biggest issues with them all had to do with the owners not taking care of them, Pontiac reduced the size of the oil pan of the 2.5 Iron Duke engine to fit them into the chassis reducing their oil capacity and people never check their oil being the way they are (even though they swear they do) which led to the bulk of their problems, it's not the cars fault if the owner didn't take car of it. I've never owned one but I was a mechanic all through the 80's so I've been through them more than most owners, they really were decent little cars, they were just a victim of bad timing in the long run. And contrary to what people spread around they weren't discontinued because Chevrolet demanded it, that's nothing more than fans of the car looking for something to be angry at, they were just victims of bad timing and regime changes at GM.

@dukecraig2402
@dukecraig2402 Жыл бұрын
@@franciscodanconia4324 That was the main issue behind them catching fire, despite all the rumors about how they'd catch fire there really was only 1 thing that led to it, low oil would cause a connecting rod to snap blowing a hole through the block and dumping oil all over the exhaust which would immediately catch fire. The Fiero wasn't the only car GM made with the 4 cyl Iron Duke engine but it was the only one notorious for doing that and it was because of the reduced oil capacity, do that to a notoriously leaky engine and you're asking for it, those engine's leaked like crazy especially from the rocker covers, and that goes back to owners not taking care of them also, under warranty or not it's still an owners responsibility to check their vehicle. I was a mechanic for too long, I can't tell you how many times I took an owner into the service area and pulled a dipstick out right in front of them that only had oil on the tip that was burned black and smelled like a charcoal grill, I'd tell them they need to pay more attention to their car and without exception they'd always say "I check my oil and change it regularly" despite what I was showing them right there right in front of them. I've heard it all as a mechanic.

As the former original owner of a 1985 Fiero GT, I think the Mera looks like a Clownmobile. And as for "rugged reliability", my Fiero GT needed a new Clutch every 25,000 miles and blew holes in its tubular exhaust manifolds (basically factory headers) every few months (luckily, the manifolds were covered under the 5 year / 50,000 miles federally mandated Emissions Warranty). And the clutches were not my fault. The Clutches on my Fiats (X1/9 and a Spider 2000) and my two MG Midgets all lasted around 40 to 50 thousand miles each. And I have nearly 80,000 miles on the clutch in my 1972 Datsun 240Z even with its modified, 200+ hp engine.

Never heard of the Mera before this video. But here is a bit of speculation: The picture of the front facade of the garage they were being built in clicked a memory. Michigan had two dams break a few years ago. In the coverage, there was highlighted a business that was destroyed that the pictures showed it to be surrounded by Fieros. I thought it was just an over board collector (we have a lot of those kind of guys). That building looked like the one in this video. I wonder if these conversions were still going on small scale until just a few years ago?
@RKelleyCook

Not the same place at all. The second dam overspill went through downtown of small Sanford, MI which is 100 miles away from Capac. And yes there was a Crazy Collector dude who's mechanic shop on the main drag in town only had Fieros. I talked to him one day a few decades ago. How much do you want for that one? Nope not for sale. Well how about that one? Not for sale either. Oh ... I get it. Well have a nice day.

While I didn't like seeing Pontiac or the Fiero go away, the worst thing was the tooling for the space frame they had is gone too. The space frame allowed assembly with a perfect fit for body parts and other assemblies. They really needed to use the 3.8 supercharged Buick V6 in the Fiero GT.

I lived in Huntington Beach CA, USA the first time I saw a Mera. I was saving my money for one but after 88 Pontiac discontinued the Fiero 😕 I was so bummed. If they still would have made them in 1990, I would have bought one. But instead I took the money I had saved and used it as a down payment for my first house. Now 33 years later with good real estate investments, my wife and I bought 1/2 of a mountain and built our dream home into the side. We have beautiful mountain views with tons of wildlife, hiking trails, quad trails, areas for skiing and sledding. Looking back that Mera was a young man’s dream car, but now we’re living the dream.

I honestly thought that this car was essentially a rebadged Ferrari 288/308 for a bit. Sadly, the Pontiac Fiero was never a very powerful car and this custom version of the vehicle honestly needed the performance parts to match its looks. Still, it is a rather unique look at a custom option that not a lot of people knew that you could do with the Pontiac Fiero.

I only saw it for a few seconds and thought it was a kit car. Back in the 80's, a lot of people would ask if my Ferrari was a kit car. I got fed up with having to answer that all the time so I would tell them yes, it's a kit car on a VW Super Beetle frame posing as a Ferrari.

I lived close by Corporate Concepts. Back in 1988 I traded some computer work at their office for a complete body Fiero Formula body set, with new wheels. It was awesome, they had a ton of brand new, zero mileage, new take-off panels in a building. I picked what I wanted and installed them on my 1984. The Mera had all new parts except the fuel filler door, the roof/window piece, and the two headlight covers. That left my 84 with faded roof, gas door and headlight covers while the rest of the car was absolutely brand new and shiny.

Wow - the Mera was an international trademark lawsuit on wheels. 'Fiero' was already cleverly close to Ferrari in name sound alone, but for Pontiac to release a full copycat Ferrari 308 GTSi fiberglass bodykit, and then market it as an official car of Pontiac... either takes balls of steel or an 1980's cocaine party to make this kind of decision. The Fiero as a mid-engine, affordable car was innovative... the Mera, however, is boldfaced theft.
