GM never let Pontiac put a decent engine in the Fiero because the Corvette at the time was aneamic and they would never let a Pontiact Sport Car out perform the Corvette.

That was mentioned in All Corvettes are Red, and to be clear that book is NOT a Corvette book, it's a great read if you want to find out just how goofed up huge companies like General Motors can be! They had put one of their "Quad 4" engines into a Fiero for testing and it had a quicker 0-60MPH time than the Corvette of the time, and soon as the powers that be heard this, their answer was "CRUSH IT". Simple edict, nothing else in their lineup could compete with the Corvette when it came to 0-60 and 1/4 mile time, which I guess made sense from a marketing standpoint, but, well, DAMN, the shame of what so easily could've been, if not for that company being the huge tangled mess it was, is and always will be!

@@terrybeavan4264 Chevy was not happy with Buick when the GNX was way faster than a Corvette. The 2.3L Q4 (the 170 hp, 7000 rpm redline version) + 5 speed manual from the Olds Cutlass would have been perfect for the Fiero. I know that version of the Q4 came after the Fiero was dead, but you get what I'm saying.

I haven't driven one with the 3800, but I'm honestly not sure it needs it. Not every car has to be a tire shredder, and the 2.8 has a great low-end grunt personality that I enjoy. I can't help but think that 310 RWHP would just upset the balance.. that much extra power and a little extra weight in the back and I can't help but think you'll just end up with snap oversteer. I think it'd be interesting to see something like the Fiesta ST drivetrain swapped in. This would shave off maybe 100lbs in the rear, and you'd have right around 200hp/tq. That could be fun! I don't think I'd want to mess with all that turbo shenanigans, tho. I'm good with my factory 2.8 V6 ;).

@newtonfirefly3584
@newtonfirefly3584 2 жыл бұрын
@recidivists; Scotty did mention twice about "///doing whatever You want with it .. " putting in a "V-8". He did not mention any specific V-8 engine. There are some that but in the NorthStar 4.8 L, and it seems more have put in a LS-4, 5.3 L and of them many with a singe or twin turbocharger(s) [of various sizes]. There are even fewer that have put in a Corvette LT1 with a six speed transmission. Certainly the options with all V-6, V-8 can be Supercharger-blower or turbocharger. Also the same options may have done wit the Toyota MR2 with TRD and Honda J-,K- Series 4 cylinder, V-6, V-8 engines work well also. Imagine putting a 5.7 L, COPO, Coyote, Toyota, especially a NASCAR version 955 bHP N/A, LT2 Corvette 6.2 L, Dodge HEMI, Hellcat, Redeye or others ! When considering increasing the engine HP & Torque, the entire drive train, must be considered, which in this design is the trans-axle, axles, through wheel hubs. Also proper upgraded brakes must included. Some suspension upgrades may be needed. The 1987-88 GT had the original intended independent suspension, similar with the Corvette C4. This platform is one of the best to work with for many applications: A. "Fun', enjoyable 'Roadaster' B. Powerful, sporty driving vehicle, experience C. nearly all types of racing applications: road, track, time trial, drag, including drive & race events. D. Great potential for a high efficiency vehicle with sporty shape, styling, etc. This was and has been one of my favorite vehicles, ever designed and produced. Clearly Toyota copied most of it - first production MR2 1988 - their second version looks more similar to the Fiero GT. Imagine using a Fiero to have a Stanley Meyer Hydrogen innovation, implementation engine ! Or other combinations of motors, power, etc. ! Scotty also did not quite mention the advantages about the body completely either. The panels are a composite, polymer, which is flexible, durable, light weight, not like fiberglass or carbon-fiber. The flexible body panels allow for some amount of forces and return to their shape and are easily replaceable. This same exact material, idea was used in the Saturn car line. Their assembly, factory was a brand new, robotic plant in Tennessee, built in cooperation with Toyota [part owner]. Perhaps You remember if You are old enough ? All The Best Sincerely

GM did the same thing with the Olds Cutlass coupe. The 2.3L Quad4. 170hp. 7000 rpm redline. 5 speed manual. That was 1993, a couple years before the hi revving 4 banger craze really got traction. The Q4 blew head gaskets all the time, GM killed that engine/trans combo and just went back to the boring 3.1/4T40 combo.

Got my ‘88 Fiero base model from a junkyard, it had 244k miles on it with a seized up Iron Duke. It had been sitting there for a year with original asking price of $3,200, it had finally been lowered to $2,500, my cousin called me last month and told me they had a Fiero for $1,800 and I had him tell me the color. I confirmed it was the same one, I talk to the GM at the junkyard to see what they’d take, $1,400 for car and TTL. I told her I’d think about it and talk to some buddies online, it was a 50/50 with responses, it’s a steal, wait and you can get a better deal. For its condition, I decided to go get it on 3/23/2021. Got news of seized engine when I was informed it was timing, I felt hopeless except for the guy storing and working on it on his yard hooked me up on a new engine and transmission for $400. A $2,000 running Fiero with added maintenance and minor things was a steal of a deal for me. I can’t wait to drive it.

Smokey Yunick built two hot vapor cars. A Ford Fiesta as his personal car. And a Pontiac Fiero. He had patents on his hot vapor engine. If I recall, he invited Detroit engineers out to test the car. 50mpg and mid 14 second 1/4mile time. He told the engineers they were techno fools. Cars becoming needlessly complex. His hot vapor engine used a carb and in his system the single turbo, he called it a "Homgenizer." In hot vapor engine, exhaust gas is rerouted to super heat the fuel/air mix to 400 degrees. You can find articles online about the engine and whatnot.

GM upper management didn't want the Fiero to compete with the vette. There is a story about how GM had a lot of reporters at the Milford proving grounds to see the new corvette. The were 2 race prepped Fieros with aluminum V6's testing at the same time. Apparently the reporters were very impressed with the Fiero and many actually thought it was the new vette. That was the beginning of the end of the Fiero.

But the most bizarre car loading the car owner had a fiero and told me to put it on the back of the car over the vents. I said are you serious? He said yes and went ahead a loaded his car that way. Very cool car with those mods! The Fiero spaceframe design with plastic body panels was a precursor to Saturn's use of that approach a few years down the road. The "real" Spring Hill built S Series Saturns anyway, and then the Opel Vectra based L Series minus the rear quarter panels, the VUE and the ION all used the plastic body panels. In its later years Saturn just sold straight rebadged Opel/GM stuff. GM always manages to mess up a good thing!

One of the memorable street racing videos on KZbin I remember was some copper-orange painted one with Indiana plates that had a similar spec'd 3800 setup with wide tires on the rear. Whoever had that one got the suspension and transmission dialed in, and would get about 3 car lengths on other cars that had close to 3X the power it had. That thing just hooked up perfectly with the pavement every time, which really was amusing to watch. (Comparable to a Tesla in ludicrous mode, but only the rear wheels doing the job.) I wonder if anyone else recalls seeing that, and is it part of Fiero lore?

That always gets glossed over in favor of the "Fieros catch on fire" legend. The surviving V6 one's aren't necessarily cheap for the year, though, especially the '88s.
