I bought an 84 Eagle wagon in 2015 for 600 bucks. It needed ball joints. Basically for the winter to keep my ‘11 mustang off the road. I chose the Eagle after watching the episode of top gear when they took sport wagons to find the beginning of the Nile or something. I said they were all stupid and should have chosen the Eagle but they are the 3 stooges of cars so no big deal. I loved it on the snow. Limited model so it had power seats, windows, locks, leather and vinyl wood panels. Moved to Florida later and sold it. I do have 2 other AMC designs the YJ wrangler and XJ. Cherokee

The funny thing is when you said it's 1987 but it feels like the 70s that's because that body design dates back to the early 70s as the Hornet. in 1978 they changed the name to Concord and then when it went 4WD it became the Eagle. So you were pretty much driving a 25 YO design. I'm glad you mentioned Subaru. It showed again that AMC was ahead of it's time.

The AMC Eagle concept was way ahead of its time. I almost bought one in the 1980's. AMC was on its death bed, though. The Eagle was basically a 1970's Hornet on which AMC grafted a single speed transfer case with full-time 4WD or 2WD selections, and independent front suspension, and the old-fashioned carbureted 258 CID straight six. By 1987, AMC had come out with the much more powerful and refined 4.0 multi-port injected 4.0L straight six for the Jeep Cherokee and Comanche pickup , but it never made it into the Eagle. So, the Eagle was a very innovative car for its time that was cobbled together from the parts shelf because of AMC's horrible financial condition. That's why it was never a big seller. Great snow car, though.

@tuanh_duong3 жыл бұрын
You are right that it feels like it is from the 70s. The Eagle dates back originally to the Hornet, a compact car that was one of the best sellers for the company. Then, they somehow managed to spruce it up a bit and sold it as the Concord, a compact luxury car in the late 70s to early 80s. Finally, in its final incarnation was the Eagle. AMC also made a hatchback version of this called the SX4 and a Kammback till '83, I believe, which is even rarer. But a good number of these sold were either the wagon or, as shown here, the sedan. Man, do I want one of these :D

@325xitgrocgetter3 жыл бұрын
The car feeling like it's 1970 isn't too far off the mark. The Eagle itself was based on the Concord which was based on the Hornet which came out in 1970...so the platform was 17 years old by 1987 so even by 80s standards it was pretty dated. Still, a cool car and concept that predated the SUV by a number of years.

By 1986 the third brakelight had been a requirement on all cars. I don't remember any AMC Eagles ever having one. I didn't see one on this one either unless it was covered by that sticker in the back window.
@seiph803 жыл бұрын
I know why: the EPA actually classified the Eagles, weirdly, as light trucks, so they were technically exempt. Trucks weren't required to have them until 1994, so that's why you don't see any Eagles with the third brake light.

Wow, brought back memories, I had a 1980 AMC EAGLE STATION WAGON 4X4 with the wooden panels. That was my First car at 17 years old in 1993 in Paterson NJ. The kids made fun of me for having such a Vehicle, I stuck my middle finger at them as I drove it while they walked. Huge problem I had with it was it wouldn’t take reverse until it warmed up, depends how cold it was it could have taken 15-30 minutes to warm up then a big boom &!it would reverse. As an impatient kid I would be reving that engine, if not I would have to get out of car with friends & push car backwards to get out of parking spot. Never figured out that problem. It was a great car, until I was making a left at a intersection & a brand new Hyundai scoup speeding hit me on my right quarter panel & spun me around and at that time I didn’t wore a seatbelt and landed on the passenger side. Hyundai Scoup TOTALED! I drove my Eagle home, As per my Pops not worth the fix, sold it for parts. Thanks again for the video.
