A "friend" of mine took one of those from O.C. to San Jose in 2 hours and 45 minutes back in the 90's. They will bounce off the rev limiter happily at 143mph, where the limiter is.

Funny you mention rebooting the window switches specifically. If you look on the drivers side kick panel, you'll see an unlabeled button. Thats the resettable circuit breaker for the power windows. You do, in fact, have to reboot your windows.

Used to own a 1991 E34 535i. Loved it. 😍

I'd probably take an E-Class over this but this was when BMW and Mercedes-Benz targeted slightly different markets. The W124 was all about refinement, the 535 was more of a driver's car. 80s BMW may be more iconic but I like the more aerodynamic and modern W124's styling. Nice survivor though, these had a pretty high attrition rate. It'll keep going as long as the owner wants to keep it going. Ze Germans resisted cupholders for as long as they could. Cars are for driving and should take all of your attention. If you want to take a drink, you stop at a cafe and devote all your attention to your drink. No multitasking to ruin the experiences, so they believe.

Well it was a direct competitor for W123, the 124 came only for the last two years of E28 life

Nearly all of the cars I've owned over several decades have been German made. To this day I never even think about having a drink of any kind in the car unless it's during a very long road trip. 😅

Having owned both an E28 535i and a couple W124's with gas 6 cylinders, I love them all. but the absolute obsessive aesthetic and mechanical perfection of the W124 wins me over. with that said, the 535 was a fast, torquey road burner with the manual and LSD. Very fond memories, just too brief. Main difference: show me a BMW that doesn't leave oil on the ground... in my case, if I parked facing uphill, a trail of oil would run behind my car if it sat for a bit. 😋

i've got a euro version of the 535i with a 5 speed so 10:1 compression ratio. white exterior, black leather interior. i've put bc br coilovers on it, beefier anti sway bars, poly subframe bushings, a single mass flywheel, a 72 degrees low temp thermostat, a e32 735i water pump, a 3 row aluminum radiator with electric fans, a oil cooler, schmiedmann sports exhaust manifold coated in ceramic and properly heat shielded, a k/n cold air intake, better oiler bar banjo bolts, an ecu remap, e34 540i brake calipers with brembo pads, larger ventilated brake rotors, e65 760i brake master cylinder, a 2:1 steering quickener, front and rear strut bar, battery moved to the rear, and a usdm 535is rear spoiler. i'm looking to brace the subframe and just overall make the chassis flex less next, an aluminum one piece driveshaft, some aerodynamic skid plates, probably upgrade the lsd, remove the useless electronics, a bigger cam (probably 272 or 282), a dual valve spring kit, maybe a m-technic front bumper, and to replace the hood, trunk, front fenders, side skirts, and probably doors into fiberglass parts. i also know this guy that makes custom fuel cells and that's giving me the idea to install one of those under the rear seats and delete the original fuel tank to improve balance but the fuel cell would get in the way of the rear subframe mounts if i install it under the rear seats so i still have to work that out. i run 20w-50 engine oil, which i change every 5000km with the oil filter because i abuse it a lot. i run 75w-90 redline atf tranny fluid and power steering fluid, 75W-90 diff fluid, i change these every year or so and i do valve adjustment every 20k km while warm on the tight side so it's extremely quiet and smooth but it's also kinda dangerous to run the valve clearance too tight so i always make sure to be careful, although you can get a slight power output increase if you adjust the intake side to 0.35mm while cold.

A friend of mine had one of these a few years ago. Was always fun to rip around and the i6 sounded great while the rest of the car looked the part. Would love to buy one if people didn't want your kidneys for the is

The size in particular is 390mm = 15.3 and yes, it is damn expensive. All development really stopped in 1990. They are extremely popular for donors making them 2/3 piece

My favourite car to drive. Had one for about 7 months, until I had to move and sell it. Everything was mechanical, it was really when BMW was in their stride.

Back then when were cars were simple as everything was mechanical. Now everything is electronic and run by computer. There is a mechanic that doesn't like some of the new technology in modern cars. The problem with the tech is we don't know how long it will last until it breaks and when it breaks it will be expensive to fix

The E28 has a computer (DME). Back then they were considered to be rather high tech compared to most cars on the market. I remember people making similar comments about them. 😅
