agree. this is likely the best game in hockey history, then, now, and future. both teams stacked with HoF legends. 1972 had more national pride and emotion, but this had much more speed and excitement. so very great to have this series recorded so future generations can see why these legends became so.

Loved watching these three games and it was awesome to see the likes of Gretzky, Mario, Makarov and Krutov. As a Canadian I of course loved the result but after 33 years I finally noticed Hawerchuk interferring with Bykov on the GWG giving Super Mario a clear lane to the net. Both sides used these tactics throughout the series and Gretz simply said, that was the way thegame was called back then,. I think it was a good goal but it does add some colour to how the trailer got so wide open.

As much as I love Canada, I have liked Canadian hockey philosophy because of things like this, which we saw from the top games in the early 70's and on. Esposito & Co turned it into a war, and in my opinion war & fighting has nothing to do with hockey. It is supposed to be a game. The russians played a much more elegant way of hockey, and though it's naturally a matter of taste, I prefer elegance to sheer force and stupid fighting. That's also one of the advantages of ladies' hockey - there is more room for elegance as opposed to all the interference and obstruction.

These were the best games of two systems in place. The USSR had 5 man units where the NHL had 4 forward lines and 3 defensive pairings. The Russians main focus were on the World Championships where the NHL of course were on the Stanley Cup. Obviously, to win the World Championship the priority is the National team. That's why the Russian team played together for most of the year. The NHL teams will play together for their quest for the cup. The priority has never been the National team. Both countries learned from each other. Even today, the NHL teams have started concentrating more on 5 man units.

I forgot just how excellent the Russian team was in this era (the Canadian excellence I _hadn't_ forgot about). Man, the physical conditioning on both sides is _off the charts,_ with possibly a tiny edge for the Soviets - man, they just kept coming and swarming (if you timed control of the puck, they had it more often). The playmaking genius of Gretzky, Lemieux & company made the tiny winning difference, but let's be honest: it could've gone either way.

When the Russians had Tretiak they always had an edge. Without Tretiak after 84 Olympics they were still great but without Tretiak they could give up three goal leads, like this game. That is the difference. Tretiak was superhuman. Exhibit A: 1975 v Montreal.

As good as lemiuex , gretzky and Coffey were -and they were great-this game is not won without the third line of Hawerchuk-Sutter and Tochett and I will throw Murphy and Gilmour into the mix. Soviets had the KLM, Kasatonov and Fetisov and Kamensky but Canada was just a little deeper when it mattered. Great series and great players. Saw a lot of the Semenov and Priakihin when they joined the NHL shortly after this series but they were not in the same league as the guys I mentioned who were the role players for Canada. Not even close.

Gordon Graham, isn’t Stevens American? Lol. And yeah, Murphy was above him on the echelon too. After Coffey, Bourque and Murphy selected, i guessed Keenan found that he has enough offensive D in a team studded with offensive players, naturally he opted for more defensive D for the last 3 positions. Also, play for the almost perennial last place Devils of New Jersey didn’t help Stevens too much until they broke out to win the Stanley Cup. Samething applied for the Nordiques Joe Sakic and Detroit Steve Yzerman. If their respective teams didn’t win the Stanley Cup, they will stay under the radar forever like Hawerchuk and Gilmour or even a Ron Francis before he came to the Pittsburgh Penguins.

The Soviets changed the game for the better. Were it not for the Soviet teams (Red Army and the National Team) meeting the NHL's best, North American hockey might've descended into flat-out goonery (read: Broad Street Bullies of the mid-70's). They were never quite as good after Tretiak retired, but their hockey was an amazing display of hockey skills even after he was gone.

+Catonian1 Cant argue too much with that analysis-it is very hard to watch the early 70s hockey in NHL-outside of a few isolated guys. In fairness, however, the Montreal Canadians played beautiful skilled hockey in the 70s and when they knocked off the Flyers with skill-speed and toughness they-along with the Red machine ushered NHL hockey out of the dark ages. Glen Sather says he looked at 70s Habs and the Russians and Swedes to build his Oilers free flow game. Isles were great too but I would say they were a little more of a old style team with great coaching and good skilled grinders and a few superstars and a strong goalie. No criticism of the many skilled guys on various teams in the league in the 70s but the model at that time was one skilled line and 2 grinder lines and one line of total goons. It is hard to watch the old games now. Is it better now? Hard to say. Too many teams and too little talent to play a high skill team game.

The problem w. today's game is that the players are bigger, but the rink is the same size. Also, goalie equipment has become bigger. I don't think the game is in a particularly good state at the moment. The 80's & 90's, to my mind, were the pinnacle of North American pro hockey. I do agree w. you abt. the Canadiens of the 70's.
