It feels like watching soccer with Pelé, Garrincha, Zico, Ronaldo, Roberto Carlos on one side and Beckenbauer, Gerd Müller, Matthäus, Lahm and Klose on the other. But in hockey these top athletes of the last century were all the same age. It's the best of the two greatest nations of all times - just put in one game. It's truly the best of the best in the history of this sports.

Good god, that power play: Gretzky, Messier, Lemieux, Coffey, and Bourque! Then you see the Soviets throw out Makarov, Krutov, Larionov, and Fetisov at the same time. And all of these guys were in their primes. It's incredible.

These teams were pretty even. And Gretzky doesn't look that great against the Soviets like he does in the NHL. Makarov and Krutov were way better skaters than Gretzky and couldn't be pushed around as easily.

I don't have the link. But Messier said he felt the same thing when he lined up with/against those very same players (plus Kasatonov) on a faceoff.

I was at this game and the atmosphere in Hamilton was unbelievable. The game was incredible and watching Gretzky-Lemieux was magical. My only regret was that after experiencing that classic match-up between the world's greatest players I have spent the past 30+ years being totally bored with the NHL regular season games.

Having seen this game years back and then highlights over the next 20, these were undoubtedly the two best teams that ever played. The talent on both these teams has never been surpassed. Refereeing always favoured the Soviets over there (1972), where as the same favoured us here in Canada cup tournaments (winning goal was clear interference). You can never take that bias away from the home referees, they are human. That said, whoever was lucky enough to see this series back in 87 was treated to the best hockey ever. Thank goodness this and future generations can see these games for themselves and compare it to the games today. The skating and passing was pure poetry!!

A friend of mine and I were lucky enough to attend this game. The most electrifying event I have ever had the privilege to watch. The crowd noise after we went down by 3 in the first period is something I'll never forget. I personally think the way the crowd responded was what got us back into the game. The cheers believe it or not for our guys was magical. Best game I've ever seen period. The skill on both sides was simply incredible.

This game just doesn't get old! After watching it again, want to highlight overlooked players. We all know Lemieux and Gretzky (especially the 6th goal, one of the most famous goals in hockey history). After down 0-3, it was Rick Tocchet's goal (1-3) that started everything. Then he helped assist on Propp's goal (2-3), as well as Brent Sutter. Sutter's goal in the second tied the game. Then Dale Hawerchuk's involvement in the final 3 goals" He assisted on Sutter's goal, then Hawerchuk put Canada ahead 5-4. Finally, he won the vital faceoff in the Canada zone that Lemieux got to first that lead to the final goal. Last point: Larry Murphy. Scored Canada's 3rd goal, assisted on 2 other goals,...and on the final goal, Gretzky himself said that Murphy's dash to the front of the net "made the goal", because the Russian defenseman had to commit to Gretzky, who fed a wide open Mario Lemiuex. Tocchet, Sutter, Prop, Hawerchuk, Murphy....on a team with megastars, the win was truly a "team effort".

I have read several comments on boards about this and other Canada/Russia, Canada/Sweden games, and I don't understand how it always de-escalates into ridiculous name calling and slamming of one's country. I'm a Canadian and do beleive that we do have the best hockey overall, just as I'm sure most Russians think about their hockey. What I will say is that Russians play some excellent hockey, and quite often they beat us. Quite often we beat them. Why can't we just leave it at that and enjoy.

I found three different Gretzky interviews where he said that USSR had a better (deeper) team. The reason for the victory was better goal-tending and better coaching (Canada constantly was shuffling their lines and Soviets could never figure it out). Gretzky also said that he was completely spent after the second game (where he pissed himself on the bench) and could not recover for the third game.

CCCP vs CANADA were the best and most exhilarating hockey ever played. I loved watching the Soviets beautiful style of play. They had a great team. (Best ever?) A better team than Canada imo. Team Canada was together for 4 weeks only at that point, a great disadvantage if compared to the Soviets team which had been playing together for years. Team Canada needed that home cooking from the Crowd and the referees to even things out. All fair to me. The difference was the Soviets didn’t know yet about Mario Lemieux. And to all those who saw the interference/hook on the final goal of the Soviet player #27 (by Hawerchuk?), its a decent point, ...but I hate "woulda/coulda" scenarios. So if the Soviet player #27 caught up to Mario, you're forgetting that it was still a 2-on-1,...Larry Murphy all by himself in front of the goal, ... and Gretzky, being Gretzky, "would've" made the pass to Murphy (or scored himself). AND watch the video: #27 was actually behind and chasing Larry Murphy, NOT Mario! Finally, I think it was a dive...like I said, #27 was behind and chasing Murphy, wouldn't have caught up to him, so he dived out of frustration. Although you don't see it on the vid, there wasn't a lot of complaining on the Soviet side (if any). Also, the non-call on Bourque who was obviously "hooked/interfered with" led to the Soviets tying the game minutes earlier... there were plenty of non-calls in this game.

It couldt be better and those 3 matches goes in history as hockey at its Best. I feel for Sovjetunionen had they have Tretjak at his best the result would be another result but they Mylnikov but his half good as Fuur. And some refery to canada. I was little bit confuse that canada didnt get more minutt at the bench that is hockey that time. I was 16 years old and hockey at that time was yust amazing. Gretsky,Lemiux,Messier, makarov,Larionov but there was one player in this 3 matches I was Wow!!! This player is also one off the greatest and thats Valerej kamenskey. What a puck handling and great on skating. I did not think he got his creditt on this games. For me he was yust one off the greatest as Gretsky and Lemiux. I love Russian hockey and also Canada. Always on the top. Maybe they start bad but they also are in final. Russia and Canada,Finland Sweden and USA are very good with they U-20 hockey and sometimes there are more people wathing this games then senior. Canada is so good cheering home fans and they Are Nr 1 if the WC are in Canada. But USA are also Nr 1.Reegards from A very hockey Fan.( sorry my english)Ps. This my answer other have they. And maybe 10 off the best Russians player we never will see again. The Big red Machine and Valeri Kamenskey. No one can handle the puck as him at that time. 20 greatest canadian against 20 best russian player. It couldt be better. The different was that they had Fuur against Mylnikov. Fuur was clearly the best

Team Canada 1987 is without question the greatest hockey team ever on ice.Gretsky,Messier,Mario.L.Anderson,Coffey,Hawerchuck,Gilmour,Raymond.B.#4 of those players are on top 10 scorers of all time.Soviets were a great team but they could not match Team Canada's talent!

Soviets had best team but these games were played in canada and that made the difference. Without idiot referees canada could never win a single game .

They say that Canada hockey players are professionals, while the USSR hockey players are super professionals! Canada, as always, played dirty, breaking the rules, specially injuring the players of the USSR team, but this did not help them. The USSR team is higher level because they play smart hockey and not dirty. Their ability to play pass, create scoring chances out of nothing - this is the Soviet school of hockey. Canadians thought that they were the only ones who could play hockey, but it turned out that they still had to learn from Soviet hockey players. And this match is an example of this, as are many matches after that!

What a classic goal that was!

This level will never be achieved again. The Soviet Union broke up 4 years later and their hockey program was weakened. Players got picked up by NHL teams and the memory of this series fades into the past.

Canada was the best hockey nation from hockey's inception until 1960. Then internationally, the Soviets ruled. There would have been some great games back then if the Soviets played against Howe, Richard, Beliveau, Moore, Harvey, Keon, Hull, and others. Who knows? The Soviets were clearly the stronger team in 1972. A shitty slash by Bobby Clarke on Karlamov, and some luck sealed that series's fate. The Canada Cups were played on Canada soil and on small ice. Play it on big ice and the Russian's win, I think, everything, until the early 90's. However, Canada deserves credit for making Hockey tournaments international. Baseball only followed suit with the Baseball Classic 30 years later. No other sport besides Cricket and Rugby and Football (soccer) are so international as Hockey...and the first two are only in a few English dominion nations, other than that, nobody cares. So the Russian's were great in the 60's, the best in the 70's and 80's, but since the 90's, it's been Canada. 98 the Czechs won, 2006, the Swedes, but 2002, 2010, 2014 are all Canada, and the world championships, junior championships are more Canada than anybody else. It's a shame we could not see more of the Soviets in the 1960's and 70's.

Hawerchuk wins it and here's Lemieux poking it to centre. Lemieux ahead to Gretzky, has Murphy with him on a two-on-one. To Lemieux. In on goal. He shoots! HE SCORES!! Mario Lemieux with 1:26 remaining!

Otherwise they win the tournamen
