Yup. Especially since Minnesota ended up paving our way to a potential SB win against Denver. This was really the closest we came to a SB outside of the 85 season.

@@deeward5572 we’re Bears fans…it all hurts 86 we didn’t have McMahon so we had a better reason for losing. McMahon played this one and we still lost and then on top of that it was the greatest Bear’s last game.

I believe the whole game can be found on a google doc that is linked in Survivor504’s channel. The link is in the description of the previous year’s game between these teams. Saw it a few days ago

And immediately after the game, Soldier Field ripped out the carpet, and began to re-sod the gridiron back to grass. By March 1988, in time for a soccer game, a grass surface was reborn. That marked the end of the "Windy City Turf Toe" era.

I have been wanting to see this game so baaaaadd....again. I was in highschool and so much hated the 🐻 🐻🐻🐻🐻 s. I never like doug the fluke, jim, or mike. My hate for them came from 1984 divisional round at RFK. Then dogone the 85 regular season game...... OUCH Only one team to win back to back road playoff games in the same stadium in consecutive seasons........ Washington Redskins! Rest in peace to all those who played in that era that are no longer here. Love you, Walter.

In Walter’s last three games (the final two regular season games when Neal got hurt and this playoff game), he averaged 82 yards rushing per with a 4+ ypc average. I understand why the switch was made to start featuring Neal more in ‘87 (the succession plan was in place and he honestly was the better talent at that point). But make no mistake, Walter was absolutely still Walter. He hadn’t fallen off. They just couldn’t find enough carries for both backs. That’s all it was.
@SECRETARIATguy224 Жыл бұрын
Not exactly true. He was still Walter, but he'd lost a solid step and a half in speed. He was still a very good inside runner, but he needed a good blocking back, a fullback, in front of him. McCaskey ordered Ditka to start Neal Anderson in 87 or be fired, and he refused to bench Walter Payton, so the only solution was to start Anderson at fullback, and of course Neal Anderson just wasn't the kind of blocking back Payton needed.
@trevorhembrough1290 Жыл бұрын
@@SECRETARIATguy224 They weren’t going to feature Walter exclusively if both he and Neal were in the lineup together. Neal was clearly the faster back at this point, with way more of an upside. But Walter could still get it done if he’d been featured.

McCaskey n Walter had beef over something we don't know about during the off season
@SECRETARIATguy2246 ай бұрын
@@trevorhembrough1290Anderson was the better runner by 1987. The only way to feature Payton effectively was for Suhey to block for him, but then Anderson would have to ride the bench. Ditka refused to bench Payton, but would've been fired if he didn't start Anderson. It's a classic Catch-22. I love Walter, but he had lost a step and a half by 1987. He just couldn't get to the corner anymore. He could still be effective running inside because of his strength, but he had to have a blocking fullback in front of him. The truth is he was no longer good enough to carry the ball 300-plus times a season.

This was the Bears chance to make it to a Super Bowl. If they had beaten the Redskins, they would have had the Vikings at home for the NFC Championship and they had beaten them both times. The Bears had their chance 14-0 and then the Bears offense stalled pretty much the rest of the game.

That Bears team was dynamite and upset the Redskins in RFK (in the only playoff defeat my team ever suffered at home in the 30 years of that stadium just a few years earlier before this playoff here.) I understand the disappointment of not getting another super bowl, but the NFC was just loaded with teams including the 49ers, the Giants, you guys, etc You have CALEB WILLIAMS as your 1st-round draft choice. The Redskins...err.. COMMANDERS got a pretty good guy as the second quarterback in the draft. Things are looking up for both our teams. NEXT SEASON WILL BE BETTER THAN THE LAST ONE FOR SURE FOR BOTH OUR TEAMS!

He sadly just couldn't take the hits especially on that astroturf. Now he has CTE like symptoms along with other Bears like Steve McMichael with ALS which most likely will have CTE discovered when he died. Dave Duerson committed suicide and had CTE.
