The 1987 GT Pro Performer, Pro Freestyle Tour and PFTTM seat clamp differences between the standard (small) and XL (larger) seat clamp. The performer used a different seat clamp. This clamp was only used in 1987. Not in 1986 and not in 1988 and beyond.

Interesting info; I never knew there were two clamp sizes made for ‘87 day glow pink bikes. However, a few questions stand out: 1. My ‘87 Pro Performer (blue) I had when I was 12 came stock with the newer 1-piece clamp seen in the ‘88 catalog. Strangely, it was mounted upside down. I believe many ‘87 GTs came with that newer clamp. Why did you not mention the newer clamp? 2. My ‘88 Pro Freestyle Tour (electric blue) also appears to have a white powder coat under the blue. Would that not also require an XL clamp? 3. What about day glow pink bikes for ‘88, ‘89 and ‘90? Did GT make an XL version of the newer clamp for those bikes as well? Thank you. 👍

@corrioliseffect The clamp your are most likely referring to is the ‘88-90 seat clamp but they were not used on the ‘87 GT’s in production. It is more likely that frame sets out of a box and built up to be complete bikes received this newer clamp in error but they didn’t hit the scene until very late ‘87. By that time the production bikes would have switched over to 1988. I believe September of 1987 was the changeover. Some prototypes as early as July of ‘87. I’m not saying yours didn’t come with the ‘88 seat clamp it is just not what was normal for production/catalog bikes. As for upside down, that could be the LBS that built it or just the “Mondays”. As for why there wasn’t an XL clamp for ‘88-‘90? They didn’t need one. GT cast it correctly from the start to be able to go over 1-1/32” and clamp down without issues. Dayglow Pink was a color option from ‘86-‘90. ‘86 was Uber rare. 1990 was as well. I hope that helps. Thanks for watching and commenting.

@@atrains hey man, thanks for all your info! And I agree, my ‘87 Pro Performer was likely a late model, as I found it new on the sales floor of Paramount bike shop in early 1990. It came with the newer clamp my ‘88 PFT and ‘89 Jr. Performer have. I had a friend in elementary school who had an ‘87 Pro Freestyle Tour (day glow pink), and his had the earlier clamp seen on your ‘87 Team Model. He acquired his bike much earlier than I did; probably sometime in late ‘87 or early ‘88 at Pro-Tec Cycles in Buena Park. I remember him telling me that when his mom took him to the shop to pick out his new bike, he found 4 new Pro Freestyle Tours on the sales floor, all of them 1987 models!! He said one was white, two were blue (including possibly one Team Model) and one was day glow pink with OKG mags. He went with the pink one, and this became the first Pro Freestyle Tour I ever saw or rode. I was quite the GT nerd during middle school, and my memory is full of stories! Stay rad! 🤙

Awesome info !! Would love to see a vid explaining the difference between the GT EPOCH and non 'GT' labelled EPOCH headsets- engraved vs printed? The correct version for the 87 PFT?. What the best alternatives are if you cant source the correct part? I'm sure many newbies are asking the same question. I mistakenly bought the engraved GT EPOCH race version if anyone wants to buy it from me :)

Maybe you can make a video explaining this! I have seen many 1987 PFTs that have the pro freestyle tour sticker on the frame but the pro performer sticker on the handlebars and I have also seen them with the pro freestyle tour sticker on the handlebars my question is which one? Would it be the correct way to carry the stickers? Or is this an error of the one that produces the stickers? However, in the frames of the pro performers, the sticker on the handlebars says the same thing, giving me to understand that the stickers are attached correctly. clarify my doubt please¡¡

Thanks for watching and commenting! To answer your question on the decals, all of the Pro Performers, Pro Freestyle Tours and the Team models used the “Pro Performer” handlebars. They received only Pro Performer decals because of this. Technically the PFT used the Pro Performer bars to simplify it and make it easier to understand. If you seen any of the 1987 GT’s with Pro Freestyle Tour on the handlebars then the decal was added and it is not original. In 1988 and beyond GT just used the GT logo on the handlebars. Ditching the model designation. Made it easier. Clear as mud?
