One of my favourite battles of the 87 race. 2 completely different cars battling it out, just how Group A was intended.

I don't think enough of us appreciated how good group A was at the time. Mind you, it was Nissan that effectively killed group A with the R32 GT-R.

That JPS livery suits the M3 so well. What a beautiful car.

David Towe races one of them in historic racing and he doesn't spare the whip. I know one of the guys that previously owned that car.

This was Group A at its absolute best on a great track. It was rarely this good for different reasons including those mentioned in the previous post.

Anyone that owns either of these two types of road cars today is sitting pretty. Both worth a small fortune!

The old R31 Skyline looks like a limousine..but boy it was attached to Jim's M3 like a heamoroid. And round the whole lap too 😂

Awesome, would love to see a few young fellas have a drive in anger in these cars at Bathurst and see if they can get close on times

the armchair experts said the little M3s wouldnt be able to run with the Commodores and Skylines up the Mountain because of their perceived lack of torque, completely forgetting that they could be built down to the homologated minimum weight of only 960Kg.... The Skylines had difficulty getting down to their homologated minimum weight of only 1110Kg, the best were around the 1160-1180 mark, and the poor old Commodores had to lug a minimum of 1325Kg.

Do NOT underestimate those BMW,s, they did not have the power of the bigger cars, BUT they were VERY NIMBLE cornering braking and much better fuel economy!! The later M3's were 2.5 ( earlier models 2.3ltr ) four cylinder about 350hp non turbo, 9000rpm they revved too, M3's were a Race car first, later made into a road car, all the others were road cars made into race cars!
@TouringCarsofAus3 жыл бұрын
Exactly! Until 2005, they were the only winners of the World Touring Car Championship, albeit with a lot controversy surrounding it especially with the Bathurst 1000 in 1987.
@barryphillips73273 жыл бұрын
@@TouringCarsofAus IF my memory serves me correctly, 1987 we had cars from not just Australia, ie Texaco Sierra,s which they were running on illegal fuel, a sample was taken which did meet the rules, i think Texaco Sierras crossed the line first but the win was taken from them because of the illegal fuel giving the win to Peter Brock VK Commodore.
@TouringCarsofAus3 жыл бұрын
@@barryphillips7327 Somewhat correct, it was found that the Texaco Sierra's had illegal wheel arches and they were eventually disqualified in March 1988 giving the win to Brock, McLeod and Parsons. Despite the disqualification, the Texaco cars ran as they were at Bathurst a week later at the Calder Park 500 but had no issues there.
@barryphillips73273 жыл бұрын
@@TouringCarsofAus I had to do a bit of digging but wheel arches was the reason given for the Texaco cars being disqualified BUT their fuel was tested and i quote ''it blew the needle off the hydrometer'' in other words they were basically using rocket fuel to help the turbo engine live, they were meant to be on pump fuel.
@TouringCarsofAus3 жыл бұрын
@@barryphillips7327 The fuel was eventually tested for all the top placed cars and Texaco cars were found to be legal, for the most part that line was added in by Channel 7 from memory.
