I see the comments and I will say it again. I was so privileged growing up in the 80s. NASCAR was in its glory days and so fun and exciting to watch. I still watch today, nonetheless it is broken and needs to be fixed fast. They know it too.

These old cars speeding around the track at over 200 mph was so exciting to watch. Modern Nascar is about as exciting as watching my front lawn grown

Just watched this race again from flag to flag(remember watching with my dad back in '87)the best race I can ever remember along with '92 all star race!!! Of course I'm biased as my drivers finished 1,2!!! I'll always be an ELLIOTT(BILL & CHASE) FAN BUT MISS DAVEY ON TRACK & OFF, as great as a driver as he was HE WAS A BETTER MAN, ALWAYS HAD TIME FOR THE FANS ESPECIALLY THE YOUNG'UNS LIKE ME BACK THEN!!! Even took time out of his vacation(hunting here in WV in fall) to speak at my High School HE WILL ALWAYS BE MY HERO! It was a privilege to know the man!!!

Actually not. Even in 1987 these cars had little in common with their road counterparts. Just like today they were a road car facade over a purpose-built race frame. NASCAR had transitioned completely away from modified road cars by the late 1970s.

From 87 to 92 everyone in da garage area was looking at the favorite in that Texaco bird rolled in..his pop was my favorite & Davey just came along in time..will always b a Alabama gang man!!

Daytona and Talladega were actually safer when they raced like this even though they were faster. It’s more dangerous riding in a big 2 or 3 wide wad lap after lap because when one spins over half the field wrecks.I had to laugh at 23:28 when ken Squier calls this a tight draft 😂🤣😉

I agree. If NASCAR cares about safety like they say, then they need to stop putting them in a position to crash. The safest thing you can do is not crash.

Check out the damage to Brett Bodine's car at 33:30. You'd have to assume that he went over onto his lid in that wreck.

Yeah, sucks that CBS didn't get a good shot of the wreck (or even acknowledge the obvious roof damage to his car). Brett Bodine *has* confirmed that he flipped that day. The sad thing is CBS outdid themselves 3 years later when Jimmy Spencer flipped on the last lap of the DieHard 500 and they didn't say a word about it or show his car (or the two other cars involved in the wreck).

390 carb worked much better than the plate. They could have sleeved the venturi down to 1" on the 390 or gone to a two barrel and at least they would have had throttle response. Restrictor plates sux donkey dix.

The 390 CFM carb did not create the desired effect of putting the craprolets out front.

Unfortunately the cars were running a 390 CFM carburetors. That is why the GM’s were within a zip code of the 2 T Birds. NASCAR Went to the plate in 89 to give the GM cars a chance at the big tracks. Do not believe the B.S. about “Safety “. They failed to mention that Ironheads back to back victories at this track one of them was in A Thunderbird. The lack of hp and inferior design was not conducive to the 2 big tracks until the plate.

@@jonathanbachman2339 Restrictor Plates were introduced in the 1988 season at that year's Daytona 500 to coincide with Pontiac downsizing their Grand Prix, Oldsmobile changing from the Delta 88 GN to the Cutlass Supreme and Buick changing and downsizing from the LeSabre GN to the Regal. Chevy didn't downsize to the Lumina until the 1989 Winston 500 and Ford restyled the T-Bird in 1989. All the GM makes were playing catchup to Ford during the mid 80's.

@@cfoster81 instead of the plate they should have stuck with the 390 cfm or even down to 2 barrel 350/325 cfm and used a gear rule to keep the speed under 200 MPH.

@@jimbosc I agree, the 390 cfm should have been the way to go on the SuperSpeedways but I also liked that they put the lexan windows on the passenger side and side skirts to try to keep the cars on the ground (The roof flaps should have been used even back in the 80s IMHO)

Axle was not broken - the locker got messed up - they managed to get it to lock again on pit road and then Billy took her to the front.

@@sommer_444 Ernie was the first engine builder to create the engine that holds up for practice, qualifying and the race. and he was penalized for it too. If it had been a chevrolet then they just would have been better. But not being the france family's choice, it had to be shut down. I had a couple of guys from my home town working for a prominent team at that time and spoke of a rumor of rcr stealing a set of heads out of the Elliott's hauler. don't know how that ended up. When Ned Jarrett had his daily radio show and took callers questions someone asked him about nascar confiscating engines from rcr. Ned admitted it happened and would have a report when available. Needless to say we are still waiting.

My late father and I watched this race on TV. He always talked about Ken Squire saying Tie rods coming out the oil pan. Why are tie rods in the pan. He misspoke Connecting rods.

It may have been a quicker way to get in and out of the pits at Daytona and Talladega but you still lost a lap just trying to get back up to speed

It was a lot of fun back then. The drivers were real and unscripted. They spoke their mind without fear of retribution. Not that way anymore.

Watching this video makes me think abt how dangerous this sport used to b and when u hit tha wall it hurt and wouldn't give like today's safey measures that nascar took after me earnhardt lost his life amazing how three ppl died b4 him they didn't think much abt it but when dale earnhardt died it was huge shock well of course if u play with fire ur gunna get burnt I never understood y nascar at the time didn't listen to the drivers abt there well being

Travis Brueck I personally think that it doesn’t matter how safe the cars are nowadays, Dale still would’ve lost his life. The belts broke, and I don’t care if you have a hans, safer barrier, and a full face helmet...you can’t survive that hit with broken belts.

Ford once again was allowed to run an engine they never produced for any common use, Windsor block and Cleveland heads, no such assembly line engine ever

Shut-up - in 1987 everyone was using Aluminum aftermarket heads. Yes the Ford's were Cleveland styled on a Windsor cast iron block - but all the manufactures had tricked up heads (probably the best being the DART heads Buick developed over this period into the early 90s). Then all the Ford teams switched to Yates heads in 1992 and kicked the shit out of GM.

The engine design for all three Marques is very Similar now, each putting out about 950hp unrestricted .(modern cars).

This was after Bobby Alison got into the fence in the May race. So the carb was smaller as you here the announcers talk about it. The smaller carb.

This brings back alot of memories. Mostly memories of all you ford fans running to the souvenir stands and buying a 9, 6, 28, 21 etc and switching to the one you thought may out run earnhardt that day. Bill was tough at dega and Daytona, too bad he couldn't drive a lick no where else. BTW all these comments . Look up the 1987 champion and how many races the champion won in 87. R.i.p dale even your supposed haters know and are still talking about the greatest.

Bill's first win was at Riverside and he raced several 24hr races lol. His best tracks weren't even Daytona or Talladega, it was Michigan and Charlotte.

Couldn't Drive a lick anywhere else? You're another clueless earnhardt fan. Those chevy drivers cried and cried and cried all through the mid 80's and got Nascar to change rules and change rules. They did everything they could to slow that number 9 Ford down, and they succeeded. If they would've left them boys alone there is no telling how many races and championships the elliotts would've won. Bill could've outrun the Chevy's on 7 cylinders. Every one of those guys out there can drive, otherwise they wouldn't have made it that far.

I always pulled for GM cars especially Chevrolet but Earnhardt was rarely one of them. I hate he died but I think he is the most overrated driver in NASCAR history simply because he didn’t know how to think his way around anybody but just knocked them out of the way. He didn’t ever know he was racing he always thought he was in a demolition derby.
