Awesome profile of the 1987 season told through the lens of the Topps Tiffany Set Terry! I always remember hearing about the Tiffany cards as a kid but knew they were out of reach for this kid's wallet 🤣! Can't help but notice Nolan Ryan reaching the balance point before exploding towards home plate with one of his high octane fastballs. Or perhaps an uncle Charlie! The wood grain borders and slew of all time greats will always make this a set to remember from our childhood! Great video my friend 😁

Thanks Josh! I am all about the Tiffany cards for baseball in the late 80s. I could never afford those as a kid either. I would see the sets once in a while at a card shop or show. Surprisingly, they are for the most part affordable in graded copies considering there are only 30,000 sets. You would think the demand would be higher. I just love the look of them displayed. That set takes me back to being twelve years old again. You are so right about the Nolan Ryan. Great comment! He is giving a pitching lesson on that card. He had to be so intimidating. I appreciate the comment.

Thanks Alan. I remember a card store in my town having the Tiffany sets, but I didn't know any kids who had them. I love this set and the Tiffany is a good way to approach it with quality in mind. Like I said, they are not scarce, but they are not super common either. It took me awhile to assemble these.

Hey Terry, another super video. I found myself mesmerized and perplexed looking at the Reggie card. It was driving me crazy that I couldn’t remember that card. I even went and looked it up. I finally figured out it is the traded card 🤣. Man, I thought I was losing my mind!!! What a great card. I still think he should’ve worn 9 when he went back to Oakland. I remember the media making a big deal about the Carlton Niekro game. Pretty amazing to have an event like that. The Tiffany’s are definitely more colorful than the regular issue. I really like the backs, reminds me of O-Pee-Chee. That extra color and brightness makes a big difference. That’s awesome you mentioned the Rickey ad with the cheetah. I feel like those types of commercials don’t exist anymore. Too bad, they were very creative and fun. I love the way you lay out your cards, thank you for sharing 😁

Thanks David. Sorry I didn’t say Topps Traded on the Reggie. I like to add the traded cards to my display cases, when appropriate. I wish Reggie would’ve have wore 9 too. I believe it was because Mike Gallego wouldn’t give it up. I guess he lived up to the Chris Berman nickname “Leggo my Gallego.” I don’t remember the Carlton and Niekro game. I saw it in a book I have when preparing this video. Thanks for writing about the Henderson commercial. I like to add those nostalgic touches to my videos. Not sure everyone appreciates them but those of us who grew up with WPIX do. 1987 was my favorite year of collecting . I was excited to finish this case with the Tiffany examples. It add an extra element of quality to it which captures what this set means to me. Thanks for the comment.

I agree this is one of those sets many kids who grew up in the 80s connected with. The Mattingly is such a sharp card. It still catches my eye when I display that case in my card room. The McGWIRE is another great card with the green jersey. Wally Joyner was a big card back then. There were so many good young players coming up in the late 80s. A fun set to look back at. I am glad you enjoyed the video. Thanks for the great comment.

Awesome showcase Terry! I’m a big fan of the 87 set and the Tiffany cards really stand out! Some of the images and action photos are really under appreciated in my opinion. Some people believe that Topps did the wood grain border in 1987 as a 25 year tribute to the 1962 set. Great video! Enjoyed!
@tjmacvintagecardsnostalgia648
@tjmacvintagecardsnostalgia648 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Jim. I am a huge fan of this set too and the Tiffany is a great way to collect it. That makes sense that Topps paid tribute to the 62 design in 87. I wish they provided more information into the inspiration behind their designs. I have looked into it some and the company does not have good information on that history. I believe the 82 In action cards paid tribute to the 72 set which used the in action cards also. I agree with you on the photography of the 87 set. It is further enhanced by the border and the logo. I just wish they didn't print millions of them. It goes back to your recent video on print runs. I hope they don't make the same mistake again. Take care, Terry

Hi Terry, The mid to late 80s marked the return to collecting baseball cards for me. 1987 Topps is my favorite with the wood grain and the prominent logo. Thanks for the Tiffany explanation. Hi Nina, In my opinion, the Tiffany is the best way to collect from 87 to 91. The cards are higher quality and they will hold their value much better than the mass produced sets. I know we are not primarily doing it for the money but it is always good to make sensible decisions when collecting. A PSA 9 Tiffany Larkin is about $30 to $40 with shipping compared to $$15 yo $20 for the regular Topps Larkin. Considering there are 30,000 Tiffany Larkin cards and millions of Topps regular issue Larkins it is wise to go with the Tiffany. I hope you enjoyed your visit with family. Maybe I should start talking prices more with every card I show on my channel, not! We have plenty of those smart folks out there. 😆

Good for you! A nice PSA 8 is good too. I have 8s in my set as well. Glad you went with the Tiffany. Larkin is under appreciated considering he is in the HOF, a WS champion and an MVP. Hey Terry. It's really nice when certain sets and certain years have special personal meaning for us. I had stopped collecting for a long time by then, but for me, the '87 set was distinctive in that it really broke the whole ensconced-in a-white-border design that had been prevalent for years, although the '86 set with the black tops was also a bit of a change. I don't know what the other card companies were doing at the time. I like the back of the Tiffany cards, as they are reminiscent of the light blue and banana yellow 1970 Topps backs. The Simpsons was one of my favorite shows, although it didn't make it's 1/2 hour debut for a couple more years. Those early years of the show were just something else. And yep - WPIX!

I agree with you about those special sets. This one means a lot to me. I was collecting on and off since 1979, but that summer I bought dozens of packs. I enjoyed the challenge in putting this together with the Tiffany cards. It is extra special to display this one as it takes me back in time. Good observation on the back of the card being reminiscent of the 1970 set. The 1987 set is also the first Topps baseball set to have the logo as part of the card since 1965 Topps. I think that and the wood grain border really highlights the beautiful photography. The Yankees on WPIX were a big part of my growing up a baseball fan. The 1968 was your special set, right? Funny because that one has a distinctive border too.

@@tjmacvintagecardsnostalgia648 Hey thanks for remembering, Terry. 1968 was my first year of really collecting and becoming a baseball fan, and that set is very special to me. And yes, how many days did I watch the Yankees on WPIX, Channel 11? Not every game was on TV back in those days. One great thing about the coverage of the games in those days, was that they didn't try to cram so many commercials in between innings. When they would return to the game, you would watch the players throwing the ball around the infield and the pitcher taking his warm-up throws.

I only have the Hawk and Ryno from this year and that needs to change. The Rickey and Donnie B promos were great. Can’t help but wonder..,what if Nolan Ryan had played for good teams for the bulk of his career. In todays game he’d be traded or bought by the yanks or dodgers or now Mets and the win loss record would be nuts

Thanks David. I think it a nice project for those of us who love 87 Topps and would like higher quality cards. It will also not break the bank doing it raw or even graded. The latter took me awhile since I don’t submit cards. It is amazing that Ryan won over 300 games considering some of the teams he was on. His longevity and ability to remain healthy as a power pitcher is not talked about as much as it should be. A unique player in that he was still throwing as hard as the younger power pitchers in his 40s. Just incredible.

Nice job and great players. I enjoyed the references to what was going on that year. I didn’t know that stat about Niekro and Carlton. I learned something just yesterday about Reggie, he hit the first HR ever for the Oakland A’s. I had no clue. I love the trio of Yankees. I bought a 5000 count monster box of Tiffany cards from 1987-1991 with stars on eBay about 10 or so years ago, all because like you said they were so cheap back then! I sold the 91’s a couple of years ago to a guy who at one point had the highest graded PSA set on the registry and he sold it and regretted selling it and wanted to rebuild😱 I couldn’t do it. No way. It’s interesting to look at cards from this year as it was kind of a transition year from child to adult for me as I graduated High School that year and it’s interesting to see some of my favorite childhood players starting to show their age. Thanks for sharing an important set from your youth.

Thanks Chris. I put out a set profile every month and enjoy doing it in this format. It is fun to look back at a season and some of the important events and big years had by the players. I put them all in a playlist for each sport as I like seeing them all together. A 5,000 count box of Tiffany cards is a nice find. Funny how someone would put them together that way being they came in factory sets. They must have been searching for certain cards. The 91 Topps Tiffany are tough. That must of been quite a graded run that collector put together. I am surprised more people don't collect the Tiffany sets from 87-90. What a great alternative to the mass produced cards. Another one of those examples, where I am glad people don't. It makes it nice for us collectors. I didn't know that about Reggie either. 1987 had a lot of great young talent coming up and many players coming to the end of their career. 88 Topps on the other hand didn't have quite the young talent. Though, I do love the design and the photography is the best of all the 80s issues up to that point. It is so clean. I appreciate the comment and you sharing your story with Tiffany cards.

Great looking cards overall. As a Sandberg fan, this '87 card was probably my least favorite. However I recently saw a video of Ryne opening packs of 87 Topps and he pulled his own card. He talked about how it was taken at Shea Stadium and that he thought it was from an at-bat against Gooden. I thought it was cool that he knew that and it kind of made me like the card more than I previously had.

I remember when Donruss and Fleer came out I wasn't a fan but now looking at cards of that time period they're pretty cool. looking do you have this same issue? I see Mcgwire that's a very nice card! but then again he didn't play in the 70's? how come when you look at Brett the cards are idenctial but when you look at Carlton my card has him in a White sox uniform and yours in a Indians? for Brett the card numbers are the same the Carlton's are different my 1987 has him card 718?

Hi Mark, I have Topps traded cards included in the group including the Steve Carlton, Reggie Jackson, Greg Maddux and Andre Dawson. That is why the Carlton looks different. I think how you look at cards is often due to the era you grew up in. Thos late 70s cards have a lot of meaning to you because you connect with them from your childhood. You're a little older than me so I appreciate the cards from the mid to late 80s, but my favorite era is 50s and 60s baseball. I also like 70s and early 80s football best. Thanks, my friend. 1987 Topps are great cards to have in your collection. Such a distinctive design with great photography. The Tigers had a good team that year too. Trammell or Boggs should have been the MVP that year over Bell. I would have voted for Trammell given his team won the division. What is your favorite card from the set?

@@sammyweed4771 Those are some good ones to have. The Mattingly card always draws my eye when I look at the case. He looks great with the pinstripes and his classic batting stance.

@@tjmacvintagecardsnostalgia648 I know I’ve had those since 87. I’m the original owner. Yea Donny baseball I like to call him. Definitely one of my fav players back then. I had the George Brett one but traded it for a Bo Jackson. My friend was a die hard KC fan and loved Brett so I had too. That’s what friends are for… lol. Lots and lots of some of the greatest to ever play are in that 1987 class…. Them are some nice cards Terry. Real nice

@@sammyweed4771 I agree that 87 has loads of talented players. It was one of those eras similar to the early to mid 50s when so much talent was coming into the game. It is unfortunate that guys like Mattingly, Strawberry, Gooden and Bo Jackson did not sustain their greatness. Of course, Gooden and Strawberry got involved in drugs and Mattingly and Bo succumbed to injuries. It was a pleasure to see them play.
