My 1st PSA return! Grading 17 cards from the 80s

My 1st PSA submission has returned, and we see how well I did. I sent in 17 cards from the 1980s for their July special.

Nice set of hall of famers!!! I sent the same Mattingly years ago. It came back a 4!!! Oh well, I collect cards. I never plan to sell them. Just keep them and give them to my son when the time comes.😂😂

Look at that 'stache on Maddux! Love that you submitted all these. I just broke some old sets that I've had since a kid also and even though they are junk wax it's cool to see them so crisp. I've got my first PSA sub coming soon too - very curious to see how it goes. I've got about a 70% gem 10 rate with SGC so far and interested to see if I do better or worse with PSA.

PSA hands out 10's for modern era cards like candy. Once they get their hands on some 80's cards then they actually start doing their job lol

Decade worth of incredibly poor products, cheaply made, and you wonder why 5s and 6s exist? Flimsy card stock, lazy photography and 10 years of junk wax, and you send this in to be graded?!?!?!

@@mam362 It's not guaranteed though, depends on what type of card it is. Paper if centering is good then should be a 10 but chrome, sapphire and other cards with a different surface can have trouble and can get as low as an 8 because of the surface. Oh and TOPPS edges they cut paper with blunt blades, edges are really bad from them in some cases.

They grade vintage with the same brush as a modern card. Other than being on cardboard, it's apples to oranges.

7s and 8s are most common grades for the 80s and early 90s cards even if you think they look great. So getting a 9 is a big hit and 10 is like a dream hit. I've graded many 80s and 90s cards and i use an 8 as what to hope for and anything better is really great.

Have so many of these cards. Thought they were in good condition but seeing grading criteria realizing they wouldn't get good grades. After 40 years of being in binders and played with as a kid

I've been around for a long time, and I seek out SGC for vintage cards (definitely the most consistent grades for vintage) and Beckett for modern cards (with subgrades)...I have no problem buying a PSA graded slab as well...

Does the PSA grading company tell you why the grade was given in the first place? Like centering, color, boarders, etc.?

geez, I've been contemplating getting very similar rookies from the mid 80s to early 90s for a few years now and I'm not sure the investment into the slabs would be worth it. Half of those cards you got graded are the same ones I have put aside in card savers waiting to get graded but I'm still on the fence.

I am a Bo Jackson collector, I normally get a grade lower than expected on 80s cards. I have gotten a few random low grades feels like POP control. On 90-91 Tiffany cards I have gotten a lot more 10s.

I have some very very nice pack pulled 80s cards that came back as 7s or 8s with one 9. They are near mint at least, but i feel worth less ungraded. They have 9 maybe 10 eye appeal. It was the last time i used psa. Ive been submitting since the 90s. I agree, it feels they are stingy with their 10s if it isnt a newer card.

Great vid! PSA is lacking bigtime, your first card shown (Griffey Jr.) is off center in its slab, really off center. I've been having a hard time with PSA's quality as of late. Specialty cards like Mother's Cookies, Hostess bakery and Total Cereal cards produce in limited volumes but have crappy card stock.

How many cards do the grader damage? What is the recourse? Like what if you submit a perfect Rookie Rickey that should be a 9or 10 and comes back 7 w/a finger corner YOU KNOW wasn’t there, wtf do u do about it? I hear that going with a bulk submitter company gets better grading, that true in general? Seems like they literally closed the door on pre-80’s 10s no matter how great they may be. It feels a lot like “holding” in the NFL, where you can ALWAYS find something to justify calling holding on someone. The same as you could literally take ANY 10 as no find some tiny reason to make it a 9. EVERY ONE OF THEM. Anytime you mix money and judging, there will be done element of dishonesty being attempted. Like, whoever just invested in a rookie Rickey 10, they don’t want PSA to grade any more 10s. THE graders being mindful of the impact their 10 grades might have on the value of low-pop-10 cards automatically creates a conflict of interest in the mind of the grader. Like if they know there is no 10 grade for a 1962 card, and they get one, they will be looking for reasons it can’t be a 10. This is why AI, in this respect, would be superior to human beings. As far as the technical aspects like percentage of original surface ink remaining on a card. And relativity when comparing cards, using a curve grading for each individual card. I have a 7” screen microscope, which is pretty awesome for checking corners and edges, even sideways in the edges, which my microscope allows for room to turn cards on edge. Even perfect looking corners often have micro creasing, which I believe is from putting the cards in sleeves and pockets and removing them from sleeves and pockets. Basically any time you touch a card, assume you have micro-damaged it in some fashion. If a card is moving in the open air it is dying and vulnerable. Looking at cards through a low magnification let’s you really see what a legit sharp corner looks like and a faux one. Some are truly pristine white filling all the way to the edges with no edge cracking, which is hard to find 4 of those corners in like a 78 topps Baseball card. Under magnification they all look bad, so you look at it through a curve. Like anything, you adjust interpretation of what is good and not good. Old cards are usually littered with tiny ink splatter marks all over, which the naked eye doesn’t pick up. Until you see it magnified, and then you can kind see it w the naked eye. It tells you where to look closer. The problem with it is you start thinking nothing can be a ten. I would LOVE to be able to get 8, 9 &10 grades from the same card 15 years apart and examine them all to see how they stack up to each other. Meaning is a 10 from ‘03 like a 10 from ‘23? Or is it like a 9 from ‘23? Or vice versa? Someone needs to audit the graders so we know if we’re talking apples to apples. Do they put a “date graded” anywhere on the slabs?

PSA is so random. Your 10 in oc top to bottom and some of your other stuff probably deserved higher. I’ve sent perfect stuff in and got 9 and seen 10s for sell with edge issues. I’d crack the 9 and resubmit.

You can do it online through psa but if you have a card store near you then a lot of times they will send them in through a bulk order
