I had this same problem with my 87 Toyota 4x4 22R i was certain it was a carburetor problem, hard starts,rough idle after days of checking vacuum lines and adjusting the carburetor i decided to check my distributor cap and it had grime inside it from a bad cap seal, cleaned out the grime, replaced the rubber O ring and now its running like a swiss watch.

Great job. Small tings add up. You have experience working with this engine

Small update post video, I ended up sitting there for about 30 minutes in idle waiting and it stayed running, as well as on the way home. Picking up parts this weekend and will update from there.

Cool thanks for the update but I’m curious if the problem came back and if so, what fix did u go with?! My 22R has the same issues however, there’s no resolution fix for me! - It still has a bad idle- I’m looking at the fuel systems area rn- thxu

@@JoseGarceeya no, in doing the tune up (plugs, wires, cap and rotor) it fixed it up. Plus running a little carb cleaner helped as well. Hope you can gets your fixed up!

I've got an '86 22r with a similar issue. Pretty sure you need to clean or rebuild your carb.....or go with a genuine Weber. I plan to do the latter (previous owner tried new dist, wires, plugs, fuel filter, fuel pump, etc).
@DragonDriver52 жыл бұрын
Weber 32/36 is for sure the best thing to do but this was a quick and cheap fix 👍
@chrisnorton28373 жыл бұрын
So just needed a clean rotor n tune up. Cool! My initial guess was fuel filter...

Sounds like your EGR is starting yo get stuck open. Mine used to buck out of 1st gear. Did an EGR block off and no problems...
@natalied989Ай бұрын
Did you know for sure it wasnt a fuel delivery issue right away? Or was that a possibility but you just never had to diagnose it because you found the problem elsewhere?

No, it's just that I've worked on so many of these old Toyotas I know symptoms and where to look!

sounds like an air leak of some kind

Thanks 👍 will this be the same for a 87 Toyota Corolla ?

Probably would be pretty similar for any carburetor powered engines :) A basic tune up will always help!

Whats the deal with the three nothed lever that changes everything after it warms up? I can set my idle,air/fuel mixture on a fresh rebuilt carb an then after a few stiop lights, RPMs are in the 2k! I have to pull that 3 notched lever back down to get the idle correct an I even used a bread tie to make it stay. there but then, I smell it running rich and my mileage goes down the drain. Any avice here? Cause I know I cant alter the adjustments made initially or else I'll lose my initial propper idle at about 1k. Even the FSM makes no sense to me regarding this. Anything you can share here, most appreciated!

It sounds like maybe your choke it set too high? With the stock carb it's all vacuum controlled, plus the set screw. Could be an issue with either... Honestly, I would upgrade to the Weber 32/36 carb. They are so much easier to work on than the stock carbs and you'll get better power and fuel economy!

I have a similar issue to this with my 1990 Toyota Pickup. Though, my truck will be able to idle after about 20 minutes of driving it.

I've got a carb question for you!! I've got a 22R which is running rough and stalls if you give it any gas at idle. If I put my hand over the throttle plates, it smooths out and you can rev up just fine. Any idea what I need to do?
@chrisb31163 жыл бұрын
I replaced the fuel filters with no change.
@DragonDriver53 жыл бұрын
That's for sure a vacuum leak. The carb is getting too much air, so when you put your hand over it, then it gets less air. So I would check either vacuum lines/hoses and if not that. Then it could be one of the gaskets between the carb and the manifold 👍
@JoseGarceeya3 жыл бұрын

@@JoseGarceeya Yes, the base plate gasket was leaking. I ended up replacing the carb as it was filled with crap. As soon as I replaced the carb and gaskets, it ran beautifully again.

Do you know the gas mileage on the truck? Looking to compare mine with the same model/year.

I'm not sure, it's my friends truck. Based off of similar trucks I've had in the past, I would estimate probably about 22-24mpg average for a 2wd, or around 18-20 average mpg for a 4x4. Hope that helps :)

My 87 EFI 4WD 4Runner gets about 19mph city and it weighs probably nearly twice this pickup with the insanely heavy fiberglass top, t case and front diff . Honestly not a ton better on highway and IDK why. I bet this guy's little truck gets 25mpg for sure.

I got news for you , your grandkids will be running it way after you are gone, guarantee, those Toyotas were designed to outlast every car in the market, note, should you choose to accept you should consider put 205-75-14 tires, very possible that you may get near 29 MPG, I don't want you to believe me I dare you to prove me wrong.
