@@elockett4367You are absolutely right amico mio. I believe it was about 1999 that NBA ratings weren't great and so the league decided to create rules to favor the offense(no bodying up or hand checking or physical play...among other rule changes). These were supposed to make the game more entertaining. They obviously play to the young fans who like watching 3s launched from the locker room, dunks, lobs and free throws. Isaiah Thomas said it best about 10 years ago. He said 'today's game mirrors video games and they play checkers instead of chess'. It's a form of entertainment instead of traditional basketball play. Yes, today's players are more athletic than they were in the 60s through the 90s. But, as in most professional sports.....it's the mental game and the competitive spirits that are missing. Even if that came from his "people" and he never saw it, it still made me a fan for his career. My impression of today’s players is that they think what matter is them and not the game. They believe people should feel grateful because they are there. Their mere presence should be enough for the fans. Obviously that’s bullshit. In the age of social media, personal brands, and influencers, the appearance of something gets more value than its substance. Today’s NBA is superficial and hollow. It’s sports entertainment like WWE and not competitive sport.

If anyone wants to see what an All-Star game should look like. Take a look at the State or Origin in Rugby League in Australia. 3 match series. Best players in the league from the 2 major Northern and Southern states in Australia. The passion (particularly from the Queensland players) is what gets people watching and excited. It is an absolute slugfest between the best players and we love it.

@@AngryOldHoops kzbin.info/www/bejne/naHYiKhpadtlpsU More effort in the first tackle than the entire All Star game. Should also mention, Origin is held in the middle of the season and most of these players will still play their regular season fixtures.

Rugby League in Australia has an annual three game series called State of Origin, where each team picks their best team from across the league. They play harder than any club game during the year. It's possibly the pinnacle of the season, above the finals. They play for the glory. The NBA could learn something from State of Origin.

I watched the 1987 All Star game in full yesterday, it was really entertaining! Night and day between then and now! There was one foul in transition that literally might be a flagrant today, and that's in the freaking All Star game.

Go back and watch the full ‘87 game and count how many times the commentators mention and/or talk about the defense. That would be telling.

@LBJoverMJ-EnterTheTWINS the feminine energy they are talking about is LeBron's passive aggressive nature, his over dramatization of everything, his need for attention, his massive insecurity and his whininess. He is always crying to the refs literally a dozen times a game or crying to the media about 'wanting his damn respect' 😭😭

As lifelong NBA fan since the 80’s, your videos sum up the modern game: Very little movement when teams are on offense. I’m currently watching the Sixers vs Cavs on ESPN and stagnation is as clear as you stated. When teams go to a half court offense, pretty much the 4 guys without the ball find an area (usually around the 3 point line) and don’t move while the player with the ball is the only one moving. It’s scary I didn’t pick this up as I remember guys like Reggie Miller constantly in motion because defense was much tighter. Kudos to your assessment of the modern NBA. The fact that I got it from a KZbinr and not one NBA analyst really says something

The harsh reality is the guys of the 80s and 90s did not know any other way to play the game. They saw playing basketball as a privilege, not a right. The fact that I get angrier missing a shot in NBA 2K than these "professionals" got missing shots on national television in what was supposed to be the best against the best disgusts me.

@jfkisgr87 ай бұрын
Haha it’s all relative. I’m 40. They bitched about the ASG being full of scoring and no defense when I was a kid. The 87 ASG final score was 154-149 in OT. I believe there were 18 total threes taken by both teams. I want to say the 2024 game had 168 total threes taken by both teams but I’m not gonna look it up so someone can stick it to me by finding the exact number. They certainly played more physical in the 80s although it did nothing to slow down the pace of scoring because if you watch full games from that era (or check the box scores that featured 140-136 pt games with fewer than 10 threes attempted) grabbing and punching each other isn’t always an effective defensive strategy…the drop off in defense has ALWAYS been an issue in exhibition all star games. The difference now aesthetically is that the teams are hoisting 160+ threes in 48 minutes. The engagement on those will necessarily be less physical than drives and big man after big man posting up. If we want the ASG to look aesthetically more pleasing, we need an offside line where you can’t attempt a three unless it’s under 10 seconds in the quarter and it counts as a “heave” statistically

The idea of the All-Star game is to show off the best players in the league, which is why an All-Star selection counts as something. Unfortunately the players don’t take it seriously

Man, if MJ, Bird or Magic were playing in today’s game, they’d trash talk everyone to play hard. Today’s game has no rivalry. Everybody is chummy with each other. NBA needs some true competitors
@ukyo20106 ай бұрын
I admit that I am an old guy (I am a year older than MJ), so I might just have an old guy's perspective. But I would think/hope today's players would have competitive fire and don't want to be one upped by anyone. Even many years ago (I don't remember when exactly) it bothered me that not much defense was played, at least not as much as I would like. But that game was played like a finals game 7 in comparison to this year's.

I was just talking about this today at work and come home to see this video. Perfect. Today’s NBA players are used toilet paper in a trash can. Im so sick of hearing talking heads say that todays player are the most skilled players of all time. These players aren’t more skilled, they’re less officiated. Rules don’t matter! Every single player on the court carries the ball with every dribble, sets moving screens in every screen, travels every time they take a layup or dunk, barrels into the lane committing offensive fouls, and get ghost calls that never happened. They don’t enforce the rules of the game! And the players cry that they have to play 80% of their games to qualify for awards. Soft, whinny, babies every one of them!

Thank you very much for this video and your great comments, since they go to the root of the problem: the egos, laziness, and absurd lack of respect towards the fans worldwide and towards those who spent two hours of their time watching a basketball game. I remember the words of Jordan's fitness coach in Last Dance stating the exact opposite - and with teary eyes. Maybe that tell us a lot about compromise, will and heart. Like the many comments here, I also grew up and fell in love with the NBA at the transition period from Magic, Bird and Isiah (late 80's) to Michael Jordan, Drexler, Barkley, Olajuwon, Robinson, Pat's Knicks and the rest of the giants (1990's). For those who still had an emotional attachment to the All Star Game, since it used to be a true gem in the past, this latest edition sealed the definitive coffin of a deceased NBA. I hadn't followed the league since 2010, but I still tried watching occasional All Star Games, one worse than the other, until we got here. I believe it is irremediable. They destroyed the league, and today's FIBA basketball seems more enjoyable to watch. The All Star Game became the crowning of the egos, and a sports version of Idiocracy.
