Neutral safety switch issue, they were known to fail on old Mopars. Actually old GM's too but hell what part don't fail on every GM...lol If yours fails completely and you can't hold shifter up and turn key to start do this. Very 1st thing is be sure its in Park, 2nd turn key to the "On" position, 3rd jump its Starter/Relay with a screwdriver to get it home/shop. Be damn sure its actually in "Park" or in "Neutral" if its a stick shift because the vehicle will start up in gear like this and it will take off too. Well' actually it will run right over your dumb ass since your under it jumping the starter so imho its kinda important that its out of gear first..lol. Easy to fix the NS switch, peace!

I have a 84 D150 with an 88 motor. I have changed the starter, spark plugs and ignition switch. I still cant get it to start. Someone told me I could have a short in my ignition harness. What do you think the possible problem could be?

Is it turning over or not doing anything when you turn the key

Jose Soto at first it would crank but wouldn’t turn off. I went to get two gallons of gas one day filled her up and something sparked. I believe by the battery. She stopped starting after that. I changed the starter because it was broken. My dad said it could be the ignition switch so I changed that today and she still won’t crank or start. The radio comes on. So the battery works and it’s getting voltage.

Moto Mikey no. Currently replacing the alternator and fuel pump. I’m hoping it starts up after that.

Yea there's no telling when someone's already moved stuff around it could be any thing..if even one wire isn't making the right contact and not making the right voltage it will throw it all off

If its not even cranking, try running a new ground wire from starter relay to negative battery post

Neutral safety switch was the problem I wiggled the shift lever around to release it all the way into park and it worked

On mine it was the neutral safety switch

The shift lever controls the neutral safety switch and if it's not shifted into park all the way it wont start because of the neutral safety switch so I wiggled the shift lever to get it all the way into park and it turned over just like that I guess with the years they begin to stick so you have to move the shifter around a bit sometimes to get it right

I have a 1988 dodge d100 it came factory with a 3.9L tbi setup I swapped in a 1989 dodge 318 that was converted from tbi injection to carburetor it'll crank over great but no matter what I do I can't get spark I straight wired the ignition coil still nothing I get power to the coil but when you crank the motor over it'll drop voltage to around 9-8 volts but it's supposed to stay a constant 12 I got power to my distributor and the only way I get spark is if I have two ignition 12v wires to the positive side of the coil and it'll spark with the key on without cranking it I've talked to a few old timers and they're just as clueless as i am any advice would be awesome

Id say check everything between key and starter if it's starting but not when you hit the key maybe there something going on with the wiring
