1988 500cc French gp full race. One of my favorite 500cc races. Riders include Christian Sarron, Eddie Lawson, Wayne Gardner and Kevin Schwanz.

I was there! A fantastic battle with 4 top riders all the race long. We miss this kind of show nowadays…

Barry Sheene would give the bravery award to Schwantz, and who'd argue with him? Some of the moves he pulled off on the Suzuki's over the years were incredible. I still remember him passing Rainey going into the stadium section of the old Hockenheim circuit, so hard on the brakes to pass him that his back wheel was bouncing around like a Mexican jumping bean. But he pulled it off and won the race.

Watching back these good old GPs, I'm getting pretty sure, that Schwantz would have been more succesful, if his bikes had been a bit quicker, like the Hondas and Yamahas. The only thing he could do is to improve his braking and turning technique to a magic level to keep pace with his rivals. (I saw him even in a rainy race (fighting with Wayne Rainey), where at brakings he lifted the back wheel from the ground.) Suzuki as a brand has a lot to thank to him.

@@ferencszabo9126 ...Agreed. If the Suzuki had similar horsepower to the factory Honda and Yamaha's, Schwantz would have been a multiple champ, not a one timer. Some of his crashes during this time were born out of simply trying too hard on an underpowered bike.

Shwantz rode the ass Of The Suzuki to be competitive,if he'd had more horsepower in the engine and more input with tuning the bike then I certainly think he would have won more than He did, He crashed so much because He was always pushing the limits of the bike, his talent is what carried Suzuki, Bazza Sheene was riding a bike underpowered and did a awesome job for Suzuki Too

Great race. Steady Eddie was there at the end. Bad luck Gardner, but, that’s show business! And bike racing! These guys are all Legends! Never to be repeated. Four strokes, are far easier to ride, than these, wicked missiles! Great Stuff, thanks for posting.

On voit bien que la yam de sarron manque de vitesse dans la grande ligne droite, mais à chaque fois il repasse en tête dans les virages.Énorme baston .4 Supers pilotes

Steady Eddie Lawson really had good potential on power and good lines and bravery until the end he knew he would work hard for that race. Paul Ricard is a fast and bumpy track at different lines from the initial exit and throughout the turns. ❤😅🎉🎉🎉

Aaron Maughan Probably because his bike was really down on top Speed compared to the other bikes and he got screwed by the back markers, but couldn’t believe his luck when Gardner had engine trouble.

Notare la straordinaria sportività e correttezza di Gardner che, pur sentendosi probabilmente morire, si sposta di lato e fa passare il trio che lo seguiva per non sporcare la pista. Grandi tempi per grandi piloti.

what class this Sarron, he should have been vicious, followed the first until the end and carried out his attack in the last lap... he alone had "the" trajectory!

Back markers screwed up a lot of races, there was such a speed difference between them and the leaders. The back markers should just let them through, but some would get in the way for no reason.

Great race.. shame Gardner’s bike let him down last lap. Would have been 4 wins in a row and would have closed the gap on Lawson in the championship

Honda, s used to break down frequently bwt 83-88

And after the 4 wins, he would have had a 2nd in Uk, after Rainey...so ThE gap would get even smaller...

That was a great race! 2 strokes is where it's at. These Guys could ride. Anyone could be fast when the Electronics are at the point you can just pin it and TC covers for you like on today's GP Bikes. Put it back in the Riders hands (Wrist) BraaaAAAPP!

Honda is far too straight-laced for anyone with passion or style. Yamaha embraces it. Suzuki and Kawasaki tolerate it. Now they're not even no fun, they're no good.

In the 2 stroke times Honda engine has always been the more powerful. In 1988 the V4 honda was about 170 HP, the Yamaha 160 HP, the Suzuki 155 HP.
Mitici anni mitica pista purtroppo oggi il gatto e la volpe (Ezpeleta Ippolito) hanno rovinato tutto Marquez è il massimo che c possono fare vedere contenti loro...
