i had raced this bike in 1988. procircuit motor and suspension. that bike was 10x better than the 1987cr250. super fast, great suspension. turned great loved it.

I had one too. The only bike I won a couple of races with and got great starts, (also my first 2-stroke porting, that I now do for a living.) The 88, ($3,200) was double the price of a 85 because of the FIM production rule of 1986, (biked tripled in cost in 5 years), but it was fast. The suspension was terrible though, and my first suspension mods did not work out as well as my engine mods. The bike felt 10lbs lighter than my 1986 YZ250. The stock 88 Honda CR250 would smoke my newer stock 2019 YZ250 2-stroke. But I will fix that when needed. :) I would say my 88 CR was my most memorable bike. I raced my best on that bike. The seat height is also about 2" lower than my new YZ, so I have to lower my new bike. The sport-----was better.

Tony says the engine was not that great, and he has a point for the lower rpm power and maybe the low mid rang power, but in the upper mid-range to a screaming top end,---it was pretty fast. I did just a tiny bit of engine work, and I think it was the fastest 250cc MX bike I ever had. I may not have raced to my potential often, but I never got a bad start on that bike, (always in the top 5 out of the first corner).

@@EarthSurferUSA i bought mine used in 89 the guy won all the time in 88 it had a 300 kit on it, in 93 i found a brand new frame for 300 bucks had it completely rebuilt back to a 250 , had an aluminum tank, enzo did the suspension, turned on a dime , couldn't make my ktm's turn like that

I think that was the first year for "nikisil" cylinder plating, and I was skeptical about it before I bought the bike. But the plating proved me wrong. Not only did the engine ingest a ton of sand for the first week I rode it, (I did not check if the filter had filter oil on it. It was dry), but I rode it for 5 summers, (new piston/ring each spring), and the plating showed no damage until the 5th year,---and it was minor damage. I bet it got another 2 or 3 good summers out of it. 1997 Kawasaki "electro-fusion" plating,---did not last 2 seasons and I had to have it replated at US Chrome. That Honda cylinder plating totally changed my mind.

The mellow power made it a great trail/harescramble bike. Moose racing also did a powervalve spring kit for it to tune it even more. The nikasil on my cylinder held up great too. I did have one of the rear suspension link bolt bend like Tony mentioned. Only problem I ever had with it. Great bike!

All I did for better MX power was port the power valve guides a bit that gave it a bit more top end while not effecting the semi mellow mid range, lower the gearing and cleaned up the jetting. I was never a great racer,---but I always got a great start with that set up. It may actually be the fastest 250 mx bike I ever had, but you did have to ride it a bit more like a 125 in the higher rpm's. I never liked the forks. They needed work, and I definitely did not make the right mods there. :)

I don’t know about mellow power mine came on hard. Although I did run it in the trails I can’t say it was excellent at it

Hey man. Fantastic reviews. Do you or anyone else on here have any specific suspension modification recommendations for improvement on this machine? I also have a shock from an 89 machine as well as the original 88 shock to choose from. Many thanks Russ

I disagree with the fork fix. It needed lighter compression dampening, stiffer springs and more rebound dampening to handle the fork spring. It did "head shake" wildly when braking for bumpy corners, (especially if on a down hill slope), and the stiffer springs fixed that like Tony said, almost. I just put in a lighter oil, (they are all light today), to make the compression more supple to chatter bumps, and the stiffer springs,---then my rebound was too fast, and I never had that fixed. That was OK until I hit a tall faced jump, and the forks would rebound off the face and pitch my front end up too high. All it needed was some stiffer rebound dampening to control the spring, and it was very good on the chop and hard landings. Later I saw Rex Staten on TWT show agree with my suspension philosophy. Light on the compression, a heavy spring with very small preload to handle the hard hits, and the stiffer rebound to handle the heavy spring. With heavier compression, the choppy bumps would have gotten worse. I could never understand why somebody would want heavier compression---when you want the fork to move as freely as possible. But it does work well for big hits.

👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹🖐️

Mod this bike and nothing could touch it. It's a legit race bike.
@EarthSurferUSA3 жыл бұрын
As long as they were good mods, I agree. I did very little to the ports, (my first port job too), kept the stock pipe, and got many great starts with that bike. The rest of the race, usually not so good,---but that had nothing to do with the power of the engine. :) The lower rpm power was a little soft, but I just lowered the gearing to get through it fast if I got stuck down there. Out of the (5) 250cc bikes I have had, from 1982 to 2019, this Honda would get me to the first corner faster than the rest.
