1988 Johnson Evinrude 40HP Outboard Carburetor Rebuild Part 2

After rebuilding these carburetors I still had a rough idle. I took the carbs back off and removed the access plug and lead shot to clean the idle circuit out completely. I also found a good alternative to the expensive "lead shot plug" from OMC Johnson/Evinrude.

Thanks for posting this video I have been having idle issues with my 1987 evinrude 40hp but have been to nervous to take the plugs and shot out of my but now after watching this I'm going to go ahead and do it the tip of u using red lock tight makes me feel much more comfortable about the project I was worried about getting them sealed back up

I want to thank you for your video it really help me get my boat like it should be running, ibefore it was flooding out really bad so I need to put the Loctite green gasoline resistant around me tube that comes through the carburetor now the engine starts with one push of the button now and never did that before because it was always just a little bit flooded now it runs like a top WOW!!!!!!! Thank you!

Been having idling issues with my 85 Johnson 50hp which appears to be nearly identical to yours. It sat for nearly 30 years and I started restoring it last year. I have rebuilt the carbs and set the floats (among many other things), but didn’t know about removing that cap and lead shot. I’m pulling the old VRO pump this weekend and replacing it with a standard fuel pump like you did, but if I still have idle issues this will be my next step. Thanks!

Thankyou I have the same carburetors, I rebuilt them and was still having problems with it idling, the top carb was sucking air from the cap on top of the carburetor causing it not to idle. Used the lock tight and fixed the idle problem.

I really like your videos I rebuilt my carburetors didn’t do this step because I’ve never messed with it before and now it’s not idling good at all. I will let you know if this helps me, however knowing what to look for helps greatly so thanks again.

Jose's Extreme DIY I did this yesterday also went a little further and removed the reed valves they where hanging open so I cleaned them and they now close with no daylight showing. Just waiting on a gasket to re install it.

I had a Johnson 50hp that refused to stay at idle. having completely stripped the carbs down twice and it did no good at all, I finally replaced the idle jets with jets two seizes bigger. (Numbers not sizes) and the outboard ran like a dream after that, no stalling, spitting or spluttering and did not use any more fuel than it had before, fix jet carbs are one big con job, as the moment your engine starts to lose a little bit of its new-ness. that engine will need slightly more fuel to stay ticking over under load, and with a fixed jet, you cannot adjust it, so you re-build the engine for nothing! so, clean the carb and all its jets but if it still won't tick over smoothly, go up in idle jet size until it will tick over. and most Johnson outboard card's use the same type of jets! I took my 50hp idle jets out of a Johnson 140hp engine idle jet. and it was worth trying it as my engine run's sweet now!

Het, sorry for the delay. I defintely noticed a difference after doing this, As for the lead shot, I ended up using crossman .17 lead bb's. OMC/BRP wants a ridiculous amount for a tiny lead shot. I imagine you could use small lead bird shot as well.

Could you do a video detailing how the emultion tube leak could effethe engine? I have a 91 40hp that will idle poorly in neutral, but the second it goes into gear , it dies when in the run tank.

How would you go about getting the top of the emulsion tube unclogged if I got some lead in the hole?

Thank you for the video. It helped me a lot. Not many videos show the complete rebuild including core plug removal. Like you, I rebuilt the carbs but didn't take the core plugs out. I have a 1980 Johnson 50 hp with idle issues. My question to you is that my motor has another screw plug that goes in after the idle orifice plug along with a red rubber washer that keeps it air tight so where does the air get metered at? It appears that the air silencer cover has two black caps that can come off so you can adjust the air flow without removing the cover but you said that it has no adjustment. I'm puzzled why they would put caps there to adjust it if it has no adjustment. Also you only took out the one core plug and mine has two. Do you think I should clean the other one as well? Thank you for any info you can give me.

Chris, my particular carbs have no adjustment. Most outboard carbs that I have seen do. If you have the replacement caps to do both, I would definitely remove both caps to get the passages inside cleaned.

@@ExtremeDIYGuy It is the same as this one. This outboard & boat has been sitting in a basement for 7 years. Definitely, a first for me not having a high-speed adjustment or a low idle adjustment. What the? It kind of explains why it has to stay clean. I like the idea of the red seal to fill in any doubt that it doesn't seal. I will also check to see if I have a leak where the float tube feeds the idle. Thanks for that info too. I might put a dap there to make sure it doesn't leak. The Gamon lead rounds can have gone up in price to $25 a can. I found three lead rounds on Ebay for that motor for $11.00. I almost was going to use fishing sinkers but found those. Thanks again for all your help.

I have this exact motor but my problem is that engine dies down under full throttle, i can choke engine and semi get up speed, I have performed all of the cleaning procedures you show in part 1 but not every exact step as I did it before finding this video. Do you have educated guess on my problem? Thank you in advance

I would check the entire fuel system from tank to carbs. Something as simple as the tank not venting can cause an issue like that. May want to check the fuel lines inside the engine too to make sure they arent deteriorating and causing the problem.

@@ExtremeDIYGuy I have replaced all lines, primer bulb, fittings, removed VRO pump and replaced all lines from tank to motor, have new ethanol free gas in tank, installed new standard fuel pump and 2 fuel filters

It could cause performance issues yes.

There is no adjustment on this carburetor it is a fixed idle adjustment controlled by the idle jet. Hope this helps
