1988 Mercedes Benz 560SL R107 Roadster Review and Test Drive by Bill Auto Europa Naples

Offered for sale is this gorgeous example of the very collectible R107 Roadster from Mercedes-Benz, a 1988 560SL in stunning Smoke Silver over Cream Beige leather. This clean car has been beautifully maintained, and runs and drives exceptionally well. The paint is excellent and appears to be mostly original, the leather is recently new, and the wood is in exceptional condition throughout. It includes a recently installed soft top, original hard top, all books and tools. Mechanically, this car runs and drives extremely well, has cold AC, and the vent system is working properly. Also, it was stored in winter months, and has no corrosion on the body or underneath. With under 100k miles, this 560SL roadster is very collectible, and sure to accrue in value quickly. R stands for “Reserve” not “refill”. And SL means “Super Leicht” (=lightweight). See official Mercedes-Benz Website. Apart from that: Amazing review of an amazing car. I like that eighties color called smoke silver. And although I’m German, I’ve always loved those US bumpers and headlights so many people despise. It’s just that Hollywood look of the R107 that we saw in so many movies during the eighties ...

I've got an '89 and love it. I don't mind the bumpers. It's a lot faster than people give it credit for. The Alpine radio is sacrilegious. Mine came with a Becker GP. There's a guy in NJ that refurbishes them. Totally avoid the jerk. My cassette went south, he had the radio for about 3 weeks; it came back and the cassette still didn't work. I put a stop payment on my CC charge and never heard from him. When shopping for one make sure the intake grill by the windshield is flat black. If it's body color, the car's been repainted. Palm Springs is wall to wall with them.

I don't normally comment, but I have to say as a UK Mercedes fan/owner that this car at US$15.9k is a real bargain. It's no show car, but a great daily driver, which is the proper way to own these lovely cars! In the UK this motor would be double the cost of this very fair example. Bit of rust inside the top/front of the passenger door needs attention but the rest looks fair enough - especially for the price. European headlights and bumpers suit this car and all other versions much better, but hey who cares - great condo car!

I would hope whoever buys the car would replace the radiator overflow tank, it is discolored. Next go through the car and replace all of the timing chain rails, tensioner, and chain. Next replace the oil tube clips, and valve stem seals. Even though the car has low miles, it still is thirty years old, time as well as miles needs to be considered.

R107 560 engine is M117 967, it's the worst. Compression is 9:1 bad, suffocated with the cat. So, it doesn't have m117 968 which is in the euro 560sec and sel. Huge difference in sound and performance. I installed a 560 euro engine in my R107.....It's a different animal. Small body with 300hp is unbelievable.
