Sabonis in his prime was the greatest center of all-time; Hakeem was second; Wilt came third. Sabas could do everything on the court : he could run the floor, he was strong like a bull and he had size along with one of the softest touch coming from a bigman! Sorry for my English mistakes, I am German.

I honestly think that Sabonis is one of the best players of all time, just extrapolating his well above average NBA production on no legs, and also factoring in the much better athletic ability he showed as a young player in Europe. As far as how he stacks up to Hakeem, I have no idea. I do know that he was much, much taller, though we don't have wingspan measurements on those guys. But Sabonis was a legit 7'2" with a frame that must have carried around 300 lbs when he was in the NBA

Arvydas was the most impressive talent to play this sport. Period. 220 cms, could pass, could score, could block, could rebound, could defense, could run the court in his prime, three shoots, amazing iq.... Nobody is even near. Sabonis was the real deal of basket, far, far away from second guy.

I couldnt believe USSR beat Americans, and it was sure win , not questionable like in Munich 1972 . Baltic players played key role in it ( Sabonis, Kurtinaitis, Marciulonis, playmaker Sokk ) + some Ukrainians and Russians . Nice memories from my youth . Thanks for upload

I was born and live in Tartu. Gomelsky was one of the best coaches in USSR and he always said the best players are from NBA, we should learn from them. He also invited Atlanta Hawks into USSR to play some games against USSR team. I think Soviets also played some games in America vs Milwaukee Bucks . Playing against NBA teams helped in Olympics ,especially because now players believed that Americans are beatable.

The win was unexpected but it was grown men who had played a lot together against a team of kids who had little time together. 1992 showed the relative difference when the very best were allowed to play. That said, what is remarkable is how quickly the rest closed that gap.

Coach Thompson determined the outcome of this game and guaranteed this loss with four simple words: He cut Todd Lichti. Thompson had no respect for nor understanding of the international game, and he, Thompson, blew it completely by leaving Lichti off the team. Todd was made to play in a game like this, and he would have diced the court to pieces. Thompson had no clue.

Todd who?? Really? Against Sabonis, Marchulonis, Homicious, Volkov, Tikhonenko... 😛 Work for the pros, man. I mean, this was a good team, Robinson, Majerle, Ritchmond, Manning... but the soviets was a machine, with years of experience together, and the best player of the tournament. Very hard job for a bunch of teenagers, with a lot of talent, but teenagers.
@djonian
@djonian 4 жыл бұрын
Agreed. Coaching matters. Not saying Thompson wasnt a great coach, he was, but his teams only played one way. If they couldnt impose their will on you....they had no answers. This team was no different. Lute Olson beat the same Soviet team for the World Championship....with college guys.....only two yrs earlier because his roster didnt pigeon hole him into playing one way, it had the versatility necessary to adapt to the international game & exploit match ups. Not only did Thompson cut Lichti but consensus 1st team All American Sean Elliott too....two guys who defined versatility who could finish and were willing passers too. When Dan Majerle is your leading scorer and Mitch Richmond is your leading assist guy....you're not maximizing your talent. That might work vs Egypt but not against that Soviet team.

And what would have happened if they would have gone to war vs the Detroit Bad Boy Pistons with Laimbeer , Rodman, and Mahorn butchering the living day lights out of them and the refs not calling anything on Pistons yet not letting team Russia get away with anything!!!! I was always interested in Soviet sport science not in what they actually did with it but they did win. US think olympics/fIba were an easy or youth tournament like the olympic football so they just sent those college/amateur guy to represent in world championship instead of pros from nba/aba but they never seems to realized that they're actually facing against the senior player in around the world which the other country like Yugoslavia, ussr and Argentina were actually a strong competitor in senior international basketball back then. Until after the US lost in 1988 & 90, it's open their eyes to eradicated the ridiculous amateur team and going to took the international competition seriously by sending their senior player since then.

You are a fool. The IOC prohibited the US from using it's NBA/professional players to represent the US in the Olympics prior to the 1992 games, which is the reason the "Dream Team" came about for the 1992 games...maybe you've heard about this and why it was such a big deal? And until this game in 1988, the US was 84-1 in Olympic competition (this bit of info was shown at the beginning of the game...did you even watch the video? lol), so yeah, it pretty much was "an easy or youth tournament". I've seen many people make a fool of themselves talking nonsense about things they know nothing about and you have vaulted yourself into the #1 spot in my book. I suggest you spend a little less time making comments on YT and a little more time reading/learning about the things you watch...lol.
