Most definitely true. I bought my '87 N/A last July running and driving alright enough but in a state of mechanical neglect and on cut springs. I've been daily driven it every day since I've owned it, save for probably about two weeks total where I parked it and borrowed one of the family spare cars (once because my starter went out and I didn't have a replacement on hand, and once because I broke motor mounts and didn't want to do any more damage until I was able to replace them). 10 months later and I've gotten it running and driving the best it's ever been since it's become a part of my life. With every thing that I've fixed and/or upgraded, it's only become a better daily with time and my car. And I do drive it hard as well as lightly/casually

This video reminded me so much of how I feel about my car. I bought a 1996 Ford Probe off a craigslist auction and it belonged to an old man. That car is the embodiment of a 90's car. it looks fast even though it's slow, it's too heavy for a car that size and it's FWD it tries to be futuristic even though it's old school, heck with pop up headlights and swirly 3 spoke rims you can't get more 90's than that. Driving that car brings me back to my childhood and always puts a smile on my face. With 76 K original miles and amazing condition I intend to drive that car as long as I can.

Gotta correct you, the Probe is certainly not heavy for its size. Even in its day it was respectably light weight, it was about identical to the same year Prelude Celica Corrado and even the 2nd gen MR2! Oh, and the base Eclipse. A car that got into mustang Camaro territory real quick. And yours was a 4 cylinder so it was actually lighter than the GT by nearly a hundred pounds placing it lighter than much of the competition.

When the car was parked on a hill, the transmission would slip so if you didn't set the parking break REALLY bad things happened. I stumbled across a black AW11 that looked to be in really good condition and asked if we could take it home, and he said no JUST because it had an automatic transmission. :/ Like, it obviously needed some kind of repairs, I think the engine was ruined and there might have been some suspension damage, but the body was complete and replacement parts should have been cheap and plentiful. I asked my dad what it was and as soon as he told me it was a firebird I knew I had to have one. Now I'm 17 and a 2000 WS6 is my daily driver, and I put on those same gold decals I had in my memory from when I was 3. I wouldn't rather have anything else, and I'm glad you got your childhood dream car : )

Man I miss my 86 mr2. Mine was similar but black with 220k miles and rusted out. Bought it for $600. Spent $200-300 to get it inspection ready. Drove it for a few months till one of the front suspension bar mount broke and the front passenger wheel and hub popped around while driving. The wiper linkage broke before that so I just used rainx 😂. Loved that shifter. I don’t remember the terrible drone noise. I do remember people’s headlights being right in my “backseat” at night. Loved that car, thanks for sharing!

God, this video makes me miss my MR2. I'm gonna fix you up someday, babe. As soon as I have *literally anywhere* to work on you. I'm coming home, I promise. This Volt I drive is practical but boring, sensible but devoid of spirit. I want to come home. I will come home. We'll get there, babe. We'll get there. Even though you're old and rusty and fading and you've got a lot wrong with you, I can rebuild you. As soon as I have a garage.

A few corrections - the MK1b started in 1987. Changes were to the EFI (minor changes like injectors), the engine was changed to the 7 rib block/larger journal crank and rods, the side vent changed, and the air filter ducting runs through the trunk. Some minor changes to the suspension also took place because Toyota was gearing up for the SC model in 1988. The wheels are Enkei 92's. The rear spoiler was an option on all AW11s, the third brake light was added in 1986, and in 1989 it was changed to LED. Yours is a hardtop, but yet another change in 1987 was the addition of the T-top model (making 3 versions, hardtop, removable sunroof, and T-top). Yours has the upgraded cloth seats with 7 way adjustable driver seat. This was another change in the 'b' in that earlier years had two tone seats. Speaking of interior, the center armrest changed as did the location of the ebrake handle. Snap oversteer actually isn't much of an issue in an AW11 and with a driver who understands at least basic weight transferring can easily control the car. It's slightly more-so an issue in a factory SC model with the ridiculously heavy E series transmission. Snap oversteer is a much bigger issue in the 91- 92 years, and Toyota redesigned the suspension in 1993 making it far better.

During a going away party for a friend who was leaving for navy boot camp we crammed three people and a pony keg in it and completed a two hour road trip for the party. Two years later we road tripped it 400 miles to chicago to watch him graduate. I've always loved this car.

And Ive told all of my friends that I'm not going to modify it or race it or send it down a mountain at 90mph. I told them I'm gonna cruise through national forests in july with the t tops out, and rummage through thrift store bins for cassettes so I have more than just my Wonderwall tape to listen to. I'm going to travel across the country. I'm going to go places and see things in this car and I'm going to enjoy every second of it with my silly ridiculous space wedge. And then I watched this, and you said almost the same damn thing. These cars have a certain effect on people, I swear. Its just a wholesome piece of machinery, through and through.

Nah, this one deserves to be a garage queen. If you wanna beat the piss outta something, please don't let it be something that's only rare because it's clean. Also, I don't think "mister Regular" is going to enjoy red-lining his car on a regular basis. He IS the Regular Car reviewer, after all
@TheSubnetMaster7 жыл бұрын
By "drive the piss out of it," I didn't mean "beat the piss out of it." I believe you can absolutely drive it like you stole it without disrespecting it. Sports cars were meant to be driven as such - sportingly. I know that hard starts, redline shifts, and general asshattery aren't Mr. Regular's style, but I don't think he should drive it like it's made of glass. I think we've got enough people saving these cars in one way or another.
@AnArmoredMarch7 жыл бұрын
TheSubnetMaster if there are enough people saving these cars, then why is a clean one like this so rare? people are saving them, but only in the sense that they're completely rebuilding the thing. and yeah, there's difference between spirited driving, which he will do, and "sporty" driving or "hooning" which woukd be fuckin dumb in this thing, in addition to not being his style. If you aren't redline shifting it, or even coming within 1k, you aren't driving the piss out of it, end of story

My parents bought an 84, regular body style brand new when I was in Kindergarten. Ran the hell out of it, dropped a 350 in it and that is what I drove through most of high school. Main reason I love those cars. I did have an 83 as a spare car in my 20's, but I sold it to pay for my now wife's engagement ring (plus where I was moving to at the time I had no place to park a second vehicle). The 84 still sits at my parents' place, but it needs some major, major restoration.

haha I love these cars too! when I was in the 5th grade my dad purchased a used 87 and when I turned 12 he taught me how to drive it in the Kmart parking lot and then eventually let me drive it on desert roads before I was old enough to drive :D super fun car! in 95 the mk1 had seen the end of it's life with like 28000 miles on it so he bought a 93 mr2 and I got to drive that one when I got my license... I used to take him to work in the morning then use it all day then go get him after work. Both were super fun cars ... the mk2 wins in the looks department for sure but the mk1 had that "you are connected with the car" kind of feeling and the 7500 rpm redline just screamed! the mk2 was more of a mid range power band car. I'm into classic Toyotas when I was a kid I also wanted a 4runner so I bought one last year completely rebuilt the engine, ignition system, fuel system, suspension and all that and now it's my daily driver but I kind of want a sports car too ... always loved the Celica as well so I'm torn between and Mr2 and a Celica Alltrac .... alltracs are hard to find though and the Mr2 is probably more attainable. Toyotas from the 80's and 90's are some of the best cars every designed! congrats on the Mr2 man that thing is clean!
