I tear up every time I revisit this video. Roman's intro song was brilliant in encapsulating Toyota's pain and agony as they watched the youth walking out of their dealerships for NB miatas and other FWD coupes like the Chevy Cavalier. Before the minivan and SUV apocalypse happened, affordable mid-engine rear wheel drive coupes were the first to die, just as most other sports coupes soon followed. This was Toyota's last ditch effort in faith to appeal for the American public. And they answered, by promptly walking away in disgust.

best car i've ever owned. Regret selling it for an S2000 everyday. But it's gonna come back. Oh yes it is. Let's see how the 2016 miata goes as far as light weight fun thing, otherwise the MR2 spider is coming back.
@wadesloan9 жыл бұрын
So would you say the MR2 drives better than the S2000 or is it just more livable?
@giuliocarmassi9 жыл бұрын
what i'm saying is that the S2000 is faster, and is more stable, and better built, and pushed hard is a better driving machine. BUT the engine in the back is beautiful, the weight and the handling and the torque make the MR2 a riot to drive from one traffic light to the other. The S2000 is incredibly boring unless you're driving at least 50-60 mph and even then when you rev, because down low, even in the REV2 is pretty weak. The MR2 sounds great, feels great, and responds great, right from the start, in the city, and in the canyons is out of this world. And costs nothing. The miata for example sounds nothing like the MR2. And doesn't have the same torque feel either.

Again, everything is so personal, and i of course suggest to always go the same day and try all the options. Even memory can play weird tricks. I find that a lot of the new electric steering, and heavier cars, are somewhat a step backwards in terms of fun, even machines like the boxters. With the automatic and the electric steering, they are a bit of cooler, faster golf GTI's, as opposed as a real thrill machine. Things like the MR2 have just another fabric. They just make you smile more, for me. They're like sex vs HD porn. :)
@wadesloan9 жыл бұрын
haha I know exactly what you mean. I drove a 1988 Mazda RX-7 (FC) recently and I swear that was the best drive of my life! Also, your description of your experience with a mid-engined car was spot on. ***looks on Craigslist for MR2***
@RareBrink8 жыл бұрын
Been driving one for about a year and a half. Fortunately, I have a fantastic shop that specializes in MR2s just 40 minutes away so I have had nothing but great advice and work in my time with it. My upgrades include lighter wheels, stiffer suspension, lowering springs, CIA intake, dual exhaust, gutted pre-cats and some nice aesthetic changes. I take good care of the engine and that means I have a 2002 with 80k miles on it that is Dynoing 135hp at the wheels (car is quoted at 138 at the crank when stock). These things are AMAZINGLY resilient and reliable. Mine has never so much as hiccuped in the 18 months I have driven it. The miata has a tax on it now. Everyone knows everyone wants one and that jacks up the prices. You can probably go on CL right now and find an MR-S and an NB miata for similar money but the NB is going to be way worse for wear an the equivalently priced ZZW-30. When your engine packs up you go grab a 2ZZ and plop it in. It is hard to get a car that feels anything like this car. Even among other midships it is unique. The steering is just SO direct and if you get a good intake and exhaust the noise they make is INTOXICATING. The styling is that of a much more expensive car. I blew one of my coworkers minds when I told him it was a car from 2002 and I paid 6k for it. I love this car to bits. This car has 5 flaws in my mind. Fortunately, some of them are easily solvable. The first is obviously space/practicality. I am extremely lucky to have a lifestyle that lets me use one as my ONLY car. There has only been 2 occasions where I needed a full sized trunk or an extra row of seats and both times I had a friend or roommate to help out. What this means for me is that I get to daily a sports car that is satisfyingly quick, looks and sounds awesome and gets good MPG. I will probably never have a commuter car more fun than this. I look forward to my drive to work everyday. The second problem is gearing. Unless you get the 6 speed, this cars gearing is too short. First gear is basically designed for getting you moving and THAT IS IT. It isn't even really comfortable to crawl through a parking lot in first in this car. You can launch in 2nd with incredible ease. 1st lines up with 2nd at like 2,000 RPM, it is bizarre. Fifth gear is too short. At 70mph in 5th on my car I need about ~3500 RPM give or take depending on incline. The car really wants to go 60 in 5th so you have to constantly keep on it to cruise at 70.This can grow quite tiresome. Third issue is noise. The cabin is not well insulated, you have a soft top, your engine, exhaust and all 4 tires are very close to you so you get lots of noise. On top of that, the cabin has lots of things that can rattle or squeek. I fixed most of my issues with a healthy application of dynamat but you will still get lots of noise coming in through the top. Fourth is a simple fix. The precats in the headers on this car like to self destruct and ruin your shit. Just take off the header pipe, knock the precats out, blow it all out with compressed air, give it a good scrub and put the pipes back on. You will gain a few HP, not have to constantly worry about the cats exploding and your car will produce a bit of a different smell that will really grow on you. Last problem isn't even consistent across all of this generation. Most 1ZZs end up burning oil as they get on in age. Mine is relatively healthy and burns about 1/3rd a quart of oil every 3k miles. Not enough to cause a problem but the issue is there. I have seen some 1ZZ get REALLY bad with burning oil. These are usually the people who source a cheap 2ZZ (you can find them in the Toyota Matrix and those are usually never driven hard) and swap it out. For some people these things can be a deal breaker. If you are looking for a fun sports car that is just staggeringly reliable then this is the car for you. I might be trading mine in to help buy an FRS soon but I am going to continue to hang out with MR2 people so I can continue to enjoy and appreciate these amazing cars.

The lovely twitchy steering, the light weight, the sharp handling, it makes for a great driving experience. I daily mine, and reliability is great. By the way, the front badge isn't aftermarket. That's the eagle badge from the Japanese market. I have the same one, purchased at a Toyota dealer in Japan.
@atrsaroma9 жыл бұрын
I dont think its the safety standards that kill compact MR layout. It's actually much easier to package in a front crumpled zone with no engine there, but rather it's the fact that compact sports car overall is such a niche market and doing MR layout kills the possibilities of platform sharing with any other cars. Companies simply cant justify the huge cost to develop a brand new platform for a car that wont even sell many. At this price point, it cant even act like that company's halo car.

My first car was a '00 MR2 with 160k, won it off ebay and picked it up in York PA, learned on the drive home what precat failure was. After replacing the cat, the car emptied the oil pan faster than it could empty a quarter tank of gas. Put a remanufactured engine in at the auto hobby shop at the naval academy in Annapolis. Learned shortly after that 2 of the 6 water pump bolts are longer than the others but DO NOT go in the 2 raised holes on the water pump or the oil turns to starbucks. The car emptied the coolant system faster than it could empty a quarter tank of gas. Put another remanufactured engine in (they gave me a discount this time) and learned shortly after a long overdue rain that low speed, front end collisions with trees are fatal to the car. Barely broke even on the insurance payout. I'd do it all again. I learned a lot from that car.

So i drive a boxster, light, nimble, not huge power. Its like a juiced up mx5 just the engine is in the middle and i fit (6 ft 3 size 14 shoes)
@JerryKosloski9 жыл бұрын
Unbearable Pain I can agree with that. Mazda may have the Mazdaspeed Miata which has a better power/weight ratio. The only problem is that they are special editions which makes them rare. That's why the MR2 is better. They're quite a bit easier to find.

Beat me to the punch in the wintertime, I was gonna offer ya my zzw30 to review when it was warm enough to not have to wear a parka with the top down. It is a blast of a little car, it's more exciting than a base miata, cheaper than an s2000, and yeah, when it comes down to it, it's just a corolla that got put together backwards.

Honestly that little steering input at the end blew my mind.. Literally just gave me a massive desire to drive a mr2, that's by far the tightest steering I've ever seen on a stock street car

This review (among many) has contributed in me having bought 2, it also has contributed to my first crash so there's that. I'd never let go of this car, well unless it's got a tree stuck in the bonnet like my first one. Even had it repainted in a beautiful Sakhir orange last summer.

You've hit the nail on the head with this one. I drove my buddies third gen and instantly fell in love. We were going through some twisty's and had a near death moment due to it's fun snap over steer. Haha! I will one day own one just to have fun with. With a 2ZZ, these are some of the most fun you can have on four wheels.

I hate new cars thick a pillars how about instead of additional safety features just make it harder for morons to get drivers licensees
@shaft90009 жыл бұрын
Andrew Zimmerman amen. A driver's license used to be a privilege that you had to pay to go to a special school for, but now everyone has a "right" to absent-mindedly hurl 2+ tons of death down the road everyday so they can "contribute to society" while we wreck the biosphere with a billion cars nobody enjoys using. Hell, they might have a prayer of actually getting something meaningful done in what little spare time they could muster if they took the bus or train instead.
@legionofdoom20099 жыл бұрын
shaft9000 But in the US, bus and train systems either don't exist, or they suck ass. Yeah, sure, there's millions of miles of railroads with freight trains going up and down them everyday, but not a single passenger train to be found (unless you're so lucky to be able to live in an area where AmTrak serves). You see that, people?!? That's how LITTLE your political and corporate overlords think of YOU!
@shaft90009 жыл бұрын
Not only that, legion, in the 1940s in Los Angeles where i live there was a major effort to build a subway system, but it was later ripped out due to payoffs from tire and auto corporations. Google 'the GM streetcar conspiracy" for another example.
@inudude159 жыл бұрын
legionofdoom2009 Sadly Amtrak isn't even that good. The best public transit I've experienced personally is actually the Metro in Washington D.C. Super fast, punctual, clean, stupid easy. Honestly it really does suck that we don't have better public transport because it would be so nice if we did. Granted, some parts of the U.S. just can't support it. Hell, my own state of Pennsylvania, if you drive it top to bottom, you can spend eight hours in one state driving, so a bus or train might not be the answer. And other areas are so remote or rural that there's just nothing there to support a bus or rail line. But it does suck that in many cities, the public transport is useless and the roads are almost worse. If anything, there should be a joint system of good public transport in the city, and then a sort of ZipCar, or other car share program for between cities. Have a car to do the longer hauls and then be able to just hop a train to move about the city, so much easier and it would take unnecessary cars off the road...

The sw20 is a awesome car, I love it no doubt as a fellow Toyota addict, but I feel they are luxurious and their larger size makes them better for drag racing... the aw11 and mrs are my favorites, the aw11 was probably the best drivers car I've ever experienced, the 4age is great but a 20v 4age aw11 is a game changer, it turns a humble mr2 into an exotic Italian race car, feels fast sounds fast and the handling.. with some decent springs, koni yellows.. performance tires... pure nirvana.

Found and bought a 2001 MR2 Spyder because of this review. A new motor, cat delete, clutch, headlights, clutch master cylinder, windshield, brake lines, e brake cables, rear brake calipers, double din dot matrix Sony head unit, fresh hoses, bolts, plugs, and gaskets later, and I still paid less for it pre-crazy than what the typical post-crazy asking price is. Couple of cheap metal ramps with a weight capacity of 1,500 pounds, and you can do anything on this car shade tree without having to jack it up. People love the car too. I call it the Poorsche.

Just realised how they got their names The AW10 / AW11 was powered by a 4A, The SW20 / SW21 was powered by a 3S, & The ZZW30 was powered by a 1ZZ. Hence why they’re refereed to as W10’s, W20’s, and W30’s, because the first letter is based on the engine in it.
