Rhonda getting a 10.0 on a full twisting yurchenko that was very piked down is ridiculous. Thank god for the new code of points. Also Brandy Johnson should've gotten higher than Rhonda on vault. That was really ridiculous.

The scoring was so lame, huge scores for vaults landed with feet a shoulder's length apart. All it did was give the gymnasts a false sense of their own ability, only to be blind-sided when they faced the reality of international judges at the Olympics.

I am a Houstonian and bought tickets to see every single day of competition and can say that Kristie Phillips was routinely underscored compared to other gymnasts.

Yes, my heart aches for her to this day. Such a beautiful gymnast and seemed like a genuinely sweet, humble kid. I think she would have been an asset to the team with her style and ebullient personality. They did themselves a disservice keeping her off the team in favour of other bland gymnasts like Chellie Stack.

They were 4th behind East Germans by 0.3 because when Kelly garrison Steve’s was on bars in the compolsories the alternate Rhonda Faeh pulled of the spring board and hid behind it for the full routine and got caught by an East German juge and they took of 0.5

Kelly Garrison is my favourite of all the US gymnasts of this quad. Her beam is so good. I'm happy she qualified for EF at the Olympics.

When I was watching Kristie Phillips on floor it could have been Amanda Borden had I not known better. Their blond hair and cuts of course look alike, but also the way they perform on floor is alike.

Comment if you noticed that kristies beam score when she got 9.8 was so unfair it was totally a 10.0 I feel so sorry for kristie she was amazing if the olympics were in 1987 she would have won because she got 1st in the 1987 us championship she should have made the team easily in first place by like one full point fact she won the 87 us championships by 1.2

The commentators made Kelly Garrison-Steves sound practically ancient because she's 21 and married. And saying the other gymnasts went to the ice cream shop to pick flavors like bubblegum after practice, really? Forgot how stupidly infantile they made female gymnasts in the 80s and 90s..

Gymnastics was obsessed with the prepubescent back then, once you turned 17 you were considered old and ready to retire.... plus high level sports like gymnastics often delay the girls puberty so when their body finally starts changing at 16,17,18 you have more weight to work with but also more capacity for muscle

She had a lot of comings and goings between the '87 Worlds (where she did badly) and the '88 Olympics, I think she left Karolyi's for some months and then came back, so it might have taken its toll.

Seeing Don Peters pat Stacey Gunthorpe on the butt and then Doe there with him too is creepy and gross. He was a monster and pig. I was 14 in the summer of 1988 and watched these championships and the trials. I forgot how bad the commentary was. “Pretty young face”, “biological clock”, “big bodied.” So bad. And I don’t remember being so annoyed by Mary Lou “Nailed It” Retton back then.

These girls were really good. If this team had the karolyi's as head coach they would have done much better in Seoul. Peters was not a good coach.

metsdudenj haha!! Sista i would... but i dunno how u convert from vhs to youtube? It wasn't super great coverage I can tell you that...i remember they showed Missy and Chelle on bars... Kelly on beam... and like 2 on floor... and alternated with the men between routines... I havnt seen u comment on youtube in long time!!! I sooo agree with yo comment on stacey gunthorpe on vault at this competition... one the best yurchenko's ever! I am however a KristiePhillips fan haha... feel she was robbed and underscored at trials... meh... so i think we disagree on that haha... but it's cool... I just feel Missy looked great at trials and a mess by Korea.... oh well... I was devastated about Kristie... still pisses me of lol... Def shoulda been 1st alternate... then maybe we woulda had the bronze come home actually lol... stupid rhonda... but now she will be taking over Marta position soon of national coordinator so guess she got the last laugh. :)

Hey Janet....yeah Ive been quiet for a while, but if you say the coverage sucked, then it probably wasnt worth it....well in terms of the team, I think Marlowe looked really good at trials and was in super shape and really rocked the competition and looked ready for Seoul...when she got to Seoul she looked a lot heavier and really didnt perform so great there, especially in compulsories....not sure if the judges fucked her over, but from being the top us gymnast in 87 to being the weakest on the team, it seems a bit weird, but she did get a lot thicker. I did feel she was underscored there in general, esp on bars, and optionals for all events. The ideal gymnast would have been Mar, she was the strongest and would have really added a bunch of good scores, and Gunthorpe too, but she never seemed to hit, but when she did she was amazing. Yamishiro was eh, probably a little weaker than Marlowe overall. In terms of Kristie, well, the issue with her was that she was really weak on compulsories, and scored horribly at the nationals and trials on them. The judges gave up on her. Her optional bars, floor and vault were inferior to Marlowe AT TRIALS. However, I am sure she would have been put on the team had she travelled to Seoul, because knowing her that extra month would have made a difference. Faehn for me was so dreadful on compulsories and optional floor and beam that I saw no use for her on the team, and even that she couldnt make EF on vault at worlds showed me that she wasnt even a medal threat in Seoul to make the team,,

metsdudenj Yes i jus found 88 event finals... missy and chelle on bars... Kelly on beam. and Hope and Phoebe on floor. THAT's ALL they showed! Period. And i agree with Missy comments... as well as the judged fucked ALL usa girls over i feel by a bit on each routine to let germans win who sucked ass and shoulda finished below the bulgarians even... SAme as at trials where i felt Kristie was underscored alot.. on vault, bars, and at usa's on beam..Missy to me was overscored a bit at trials cuz it was her home and the crowd and judges i feel inflated things to her. Missy actually looked more fit and at her best in college to me in almost her whole career! Bizzare... I'm lost though on you saying missy best usa girl in 87? Kristie won everything that year? american cup, usa ussr, usa champ... 2nd pan am's... wasn't she number one or considered up till worlds? And yes Kristie continued to improve... the proof was even at the end of august beginning of sept i have a thing on vhs called The Carolina Invatational... ALL the USA team was there. top 8... Kristie was even smaller! and more fit... remember from usa's to trials was 3 weeks but Kristie looked drastically diff between the two competitions... and after trials a month later she was even smaller.. she looked like she did in 86 almost body wise! smaller than 87! She moved better. more fluid... and already Missy was looking different.. it was like she knew she made the team and just slacked off and went to mcdonalds.... i dunno. I like Missy but ... ya Stacey was great! If she could ever have hit! Remember she was 5th for awhile and IN the mix with a chance for Korea but blew it... she shoulda stayed with Bela and not gone to Scats in early 87... I didn't know much about Doe until 1988... really only saw her in the 88 usa ussr meet that year in april... she looked decent... fell on floor there... Sabrina to me was stiff.. i just never liked her gym... or her style... her double layout was not really.. more like layout pike... her dance meh.. her form on all and i mean ALL the events bothered me... yurcheko piked down on vault... bars after her gienger messy bent legg tucked form on shoot over to low... beam bad form alot and bad split leaps... swing thru layout bent leg... she was just ok... rhonda could only vault and do bars... that was it. period. haha... I LOVED Stacey... so much... on vault and floor... amazing vault.. and her floor in the 86 usa ussr is just amazing to me... she had this natrually form and technique that was just dead on... i LOVED her roundoff's even... best technician ever to me in a way... picture perfect in certain ways on vault and floor... and sky high tumbling... I was 13 in 1988... was my first games... as i'd started taping and watching gym at 86 american cup.. became obsessed... so i remember it well... i don't understand Hope Spivey... bad form.. bad beam.. bad bars... vault barely ok... and pretty good on floor but that's it... i can't imagine her looking good in compulasies... at all... how she was top 3 in 88 i will never know.... Brandy to me was really the best and it showed in Korea... i felt then she was better even at usa's and trials over phoebe who i never loved or hated.. phoebe to me was just ok... to rigid for my taste on all events... but def she was second best... My team woulda been... 1. Brandy 2. Phoebe 3. Stacey 4. Melissa 5. Kristie 6. Chelle Alternate: Kelly 2nd alternate Sabrina .... if you asked me who i thought would make the team and who i wanted ON the team say in March of 88 that is what i woulda said... haha... but it was odd then... they went by actual scores... remember dennis and dan hayden... the NATIONAL champion in 88 fell 3 times at trials or whatever and was left off team... bizzare... So it woulda been interesting had they not announced the team till October in Korea when the games started... i bet it woulda been a different team gys n girls both... that olympics peeps called the Fall Games cuz it was sooo late... never been that late EVER! Was odd. I was in skewl.. it sucked... haha... oh the good ol days... best gym is 90's and 80's by FAR! Fuck the circus shit now days lol... cheers!
