Mecir had a reputation as the "swede basher" because he managed to beat so many swedish players. Ivan Lendl felt this was because they tended to hit with a lot of topspin and Mecir loved it. Lendl purposely used to keep the ball low against Mecir and only lost to him once. You can see how Mecir would not have especially enjoyed Connors' low, flat hitting. Having said that, Mecir had a reputation for sometimes not showing up in matches. John McEnroe was once asked if he was wary of playing Mecir and he said it depended - the best version of Mecir or "the one who sleeps".
