I was 18 when DW won in 1989. Back in the early 80's, when I first started watching any Nascar racing, Mountain Dew was one my favorites so of course I rooted for Waltrip. So when Waltrip finally won the Daytona 500, I sort of felt some sort of personal satisfaction...now if only the Minnesota Vikings could win a Super Bowl...boy did I feel let down at age 8 when I decided the Vikings were my team and then found out they had already lost 4 Super Bowls, lol

Couldn't help but think of Dale and all the other drivers who suffered basal skull fractures. If you want to see how much a drivers head moves in an impact watch 1:18:24. Jody Ridley's very lucky here. This was also the last CUP race of his career.

This and Michael Waltrip's accident at Talladega in 1988 (his head hits the steering wheel then he stumbles incoherently across the track while cars are still at race speed before collapsing in the grass) are great examples of the violence that occurred inside the car during an accident at this time. Granted, in some ways the movement limited catastrophic injuries. Instead, broken bones were common occurrences because of arms and legs flailing around.

Me, my brother-in-law, and my oldest stepson attended this race. We bought tickets to the infield & camped the night before the race, then watched the entire race from the infield too......of course. This was the last NASCAR race I ever attended at Daytona.

This was the year that the UNOCAL bonus money had kept rolling over & had built up to 1 MILLION dollars, where it was finally won by Darrell Waltrip in this very race........and he won it strictly on fuel mileage. He literally ran out of gas on his way to victory lane. Sometime after the race, a sports writer asked Darrell: "How much gas do ya reckon was left in the tank when ya took the checkered flag DW?".......and 'ole Darrell grinned at him & said: "A million dollar's worth"..........LOL!!! That was priceless.

'Ole DW won that million dollar bonus money along with this, his very 1st Daytona 500 win. I can't recall if it was an interview with some sports writer immediately after the TV interview in the winner's circle, later on that evening, or possibly the next morning, but some journalist asked Darrell Waltrip: "Just how much fuel do ya reckon was really left in that gas tank Darrell?".......and with a sh*t eatin' grin, Darrell replied: "A MILLION DOLLAR'S WORTH".....LOL!!! Ain't it amazing: His car number was 17, it was his 17th time entering this race, it was his daughter's 17th birthday, and the race this year fell on Feb 17. Simply amazing. I sure do miss our once beloved motor sport.......back when NASCAR was REAL racing. ( Sure, there were a few seasons where the rules had the cars set-up on the super speedways so that they could only play "follow the leader".....but all the other years were historic, exciting, and unforgettable racing. Sadly, those days are long gone now. )

Outstanding intro of CBS Sports NASCAR. And the last manufacturers of Chevrolet Monte Carlo was replaced body style in May 1989 switch from Monte Carlo into Lumina, including new development movie of "Days Of Thunder" on the late 1989 and early 1990 and premier movie in June 1990.

Fun Fact: The name Darrell Lee Waltrip has 17 letters. The fact that this took him 17 years in car No. 17 to finally win the Daytona 500 is all too coincidental & fitting as great as his success was even then. Also the last Daytona 500 of the 1980s.

I never got the disdain for Darrell by a lot of misguided fans at least earlier on in his driving career. So, what if he talked way too much and ran his mouth? I can relate to that myself as an opinionated guy. It was about time that drivers had more open glib about their ways and Darrell helped pave the way for modernizing the complexion of the sport. The changing of the guard if you will. Darrell always had something to say which is well needed. He was severely misunderstood for too long it'd seem. Darrell was the precipice of NASCAR history in a sense because he came after Richard Petty, David Pearson, Bobby Allison, Ned Jarrett, the people who had pioneered the sport and such while being just before Dale Earnhardt, Terry Labonte, Ricky Rudd, Tim Richmond, Davey Allison, Mark Martin, Jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson, Chase Elliott, Kyle Larson along with everyone else who would follow suite to shape their own timelines. So, Darrell really was the bridge to the past, present and the future on many fronts. I think it was complementary when Cale Yarborough gave him the handle, "Jaws" at Darlington. I know Cale was being temperamental in the moment and furious with him at the time, but it stuck and probably was Cale's way of saying that Darrell was a generational talent simultaneously meaning his car could outrun his mouth, lol. I always liked how calculative and consistent he could be with his driving style which is partly why he was so good at the driver tracks such as Bristol, Martinsville and North Wilkesboro where the psychics of the g forces give the illusion of increased acceleration where it's so taxing on the racers more so than usual which keep in mind as the driver you're already baking to death in what's virtually a metal coffin using every ounce of your fiber to compartmentalize the mental facets of strategy to where it can drain the life out of the fittest athletes and Darrell won at some of those places over ten times which was on twelve occasions at Bristol. Toward the latter of his racing career alongside his broadcasting one he's since became one of the more beloved and revered figures in the sport especially with the birth of his children among other things that were set into motion. Jeff Hammond once said that Darrell finally got a white hat instead of the black one after Rusty wrecked him at the All Star race that same year in '89. Great insights from him. I'm not faulting anyone for that, but just citing the turning points in both their respective eras. Again, such an endearing man and an all around wonderful person. While I'm not a person of the faith myself, I have so much respect as a fan to see both the likes of Darrell and Stevie really carry out their convictions as examples. That's very commendable. Had he not finally conquered Daytona, it would've been such an empty chapter on his already legendary resume and I'm so glad as a fan the literal numbers were on his side in this race 'cause I know as with anyone who's followed the sport over the years that they were mired with so many disappointments in the DiGard, Junior Johnson and Rick Hendrick tenures. Thanks for the upload of this classic, NASCAR.

There is one stat incorrect with the #17 in this race. Yes, his daughter was born on September 17th, 1987, she turned 17 months old on February 17th, 1989, he won the Daytona 500 in his 17th try, and of course he was driving car #17. However, the race did not take place on February 17th, it commenced on February 19th, 1989. That was not his only win of Speedweeks 1989, he won the Goody's 300 Busch race the day before in his self-owned #17 SuperFlo Chevrolet. Technically he swept the weekend.
