Started my HGV career driving the D-series - 7.5 tonne dropside tipper for a local builder's merchants (Wetterns in Erdington - they had 24 tonne 6×2 D-series tippers too). Did my HGV test with RTITB in a D-series artic (loved the BIG mirrors on the D-series) - I dreamed of driving a Ford Cargo (and a Ford Transcontinental) in those days. Got to drive a flatbed 1614 rigid Cargo for a local timber merchants (Shipways, Garretts Green) - I was in Second Heaven (despite all the roping & sheeting).

Worked at ford and did my apprenticeship on the cargo. We thought it was very modern when it replaced the D series. Didn't see many tractor units back then, mainly 813's. The chassis were used across the range with fiat so different components could be fitted left or right hand drive hence all the bolts.

I also worked at Langley but for IVECO FORD TRUCK from 1988. When the transition to the IVECO Cargo took place at first the 2 model ranges ran down the same production line until the Ford Cargo was finished. The two designs were totally different and there was no interchange of components. I was responsible for the production line systems amongst other facilities and they ran in different environments. Not exactly chaos but lots of effort needed to keep things separate. The reason for the multiple holes and bolts was that it was easier to drill all potential holes as standard. Both truck designs had multiple build options for chassis lengths and fitments. As an aside the easiest way to tell the difference between the Ford or IVECO product was the colour of the chassis. Ford was black and IVECO was ochre (faded red).

mine had the black seats with the horizontal red stripes on, quite comfortable, alas the engine was gutless + brakes terrible, but it looked so good/futuristic in 1983... mine had a roll-back body + hiab crane on the back, good looking breakdown truck, made me lots of money in 12yrs...

I usually agree with Derek but christ hes way off the mark here. These things werent expensive or hard to get, they were cheep junk and plentiful. We had umpteen 6 wheel tractor untis, 10 or so rigid tippers and mixers and the were garbage even when they were new. For Derek to rate them alongside Scanias and Volvo's, off which im not a fan of either, will have drivers from the period laughing at him. Stick to what you know Derek. Youre a great knowledgeable man but not here im afraid.
