My dad was on this team. This was the year ESPN named them National Champions. He describes this as the best years of his life. I always love being able to find videos of his years at Permian! MOJO!

Glad you enjoyed it! Mr. Wyles carried his kicking skills from ‘88 into ‘89 and converted into a solid F back 😉 Pretty darn good years, I’d agree!

Got in an conversation the day before the game with some Aldine players at the Galleria mall, they said they were going run through us like Yates did in '85. I told them it's going to be cold long day for you boys tomorrow.

The Permian Panthers 1989 state and ESPN national champs of high school football edging out Cleveland St. Ignatious another outstanding program who edged out Permian in the USA Today national championships polls that year. Either way Permian can call themselves National Champs because they did win it all that year.

@@drewpac1765 book was good. 99% true... though Buzz did act like a used car salesman while he was there, touting our book as a "Hoosiers" kind of book. It was not, but again , pretty spot on. Movie was good too, though I don't know why they had to alter game scores and some of our opponents, as well as key players' numbers. Chavez was NOT a smallish linebacker!! LOL.

@@mistermojo66 Yes that bothered me about the film also, i saw it first as young boy, and when i finally read the book for the first time it was a shock lol. Watched some ‘87-‘89 game film also, to get an image of it all while reading, man the game sure was different in yalls time. Its changed quite a bit even from mine (early 2010s). You know i only keep up with one of my teammates these days, one of my guards (i was qb), and only because we became best friends off the field as well. Is the a stronger brotherhood around Permian? How many of your former teammates do you still keep up with, if you dont mind me asking? Thanks for your time btw man, as a Texan its pretty exciting to actually get to talk to someone from permian, yall are legends around here no doubt lol

@@drewpac1765 glad you enjoyed it. I'd say the brotherhood is pretty strong. Facebook and texting makes it much easier to keep in touch. I text regularly with a couple folks and hangout still with a couple also when they're in town. It was a right place right time situation, and to be a part of it was a blessing. Nothing or no one was bigger individual than the program as a whole. I can't emphasize enough how much the mentality and confidence we had in ourselves, and often the psyche of the other team was that they were defeated already. Played a significant part in the 80s results for sure. Thanks for reaching out!

Meh. A matter of opinion. They actually tied an opponent, and did not blow out the majority of their schedule. They didn't even win their district (Duncanville did). Would be a fun game to watch, though.

Permian had a great team that year but I sure wish that Jerry Jones stadium was available at that time. I'm certain we would have seen a much closer and perhaps different result. It was unbelievably cold that day and somewhere in the neighborhood of 10 degrees F. Permian could run their offense more effectively than Aldine could with that veer and was absolutely the better frozen weather team. Permian did a good job of controlling the clock with the lead. It was a turnover fest for Aldine on fumbled pitch outs not really caused by the defense. I'm not sure if Aldine even punted that game and the fullback rushed for close to 200 yards. Aldine massacred number 1 Judson the week before with a score of 48-14 after taking their foot off the gas with a 31-0 halftime lead. I have tapes of the title game and a homemade tape of that semifinal. If I can find that semifinal game then I will upload it. All that I'm saying is that Aldine would have scored at least 35 points in Jerry's World. Permian might have scored more but it would have been a much more competitive game. I remember that Permian was invited to come to the Astrodome to play that game. They wisely refused.

Interesting take. Having been the linebacker that caused 2 of those fumbles, I can attest that we did "cause" those fumbles. I remember watching film that Womack was a hot dog that tried to make something out of nothing, so I made a conscious effort to force him to pitch before he was ready by hitting him earlier in the play than he was used to. Slow-playing the option would have been a poor strategy given their speed vs. ours. Sure it was his choice to pitch it, but we were betting he would do it. Credit our preparation for that. Might they have scored more than the 14 they scored in Texas Stadium, I don't know. We still would have won, as we would have scored more than Aldine regardless. We were not going to be denied after the Carter B.S. the year prior.

@@JaimeBurgos86 Glad you like them! If you come to a game, I'd pick either the Odessa High game or the Midland Lee game...
