No matter how much the metaphorical hose was slipping, she didn't let it go. She couldn’t fully ignore the unmarked calls. She noticed them (the hose slipping/sliding around in her grasp) and “let it slide”, but never let go of the mental note that it (the hose) was slipping. If that makes sense... (P.S. Harry Styles was (allegedly) literally going on blind dates! His song “Carolina” is about Townes Adair Jones, a girl he went on a blind date with. So imagine Taylor’s heartbreak when she’s in love with him and he can’t commit to her - for what? He wasn’t even leaving her to be with his true soul mate or something, he was going on blind dates with strangers! Imagine Taylor’s rumination on why he couldn’t love her back.

Ive always loved the amount of lyrical parallels in This Love (first song written for 1989) with the rest of 1989. 'Silent screams' = 'I screamed so loud but no one heard a thing' from Clean, 'in Wildest dreams' literally from Wildest Dreams, 'skies grew darker' = 'the sky turned black like a perfect storm' from Clean, 'losing grip on sinking ships' = 'lose lips sink ships all the damn time' in I Know Places etc. It honestly fascinates me, that she wrote This Love first and was able to almost create songs based from that 1 song/story which was originally just a poem in her journal.

When I first heard "I let it slide like a hose on a slippery plastic summer" I immediately thought of how often those backyard slip n' slides can hurt. Like yeah you expect to slide without any problems, but if you don't have enough water you will skid on the dry patches and it'll burn your skin if you're not careful. So she "lets it slide" expecting it to be easy, but it actually really does hurt.

One of my fave things about Taylor's songwriting is how I forget it's literally her job! Like, she writes these phrases and tries them out in different songs and if it doesn't work, she reworks them into something else! It's such a cool process which I dont think is talked about enough. People assume she just sits and plays her guitar and comes up with a full song on the spot - which sometimes also happens - but for the most part, it's her coming to meetings with ideas/phrases/poems/melodies and working with other people to create the final product which I think is so cool.

i personally interpret the "only rumors about my hips and thighs" line in Is It Over Now meaning that while Harry was parading his new woman/women to the public and making it known he was dating them, Taylor kept her flings away from the public eye like she says, so there were *only rumors* about her love/sex life instead of actual proof she was dating or hooking up with someone. it kinda piggybacks off the line before it ("at least i had the decency to keep my nights out of sight").

I think you're spot on there... the most devastating (yes, devastating) love I ever experienced was one where we never actually really dated. In retrospect I can say I hoped/made up a lot of things in my mind about her, and since nothing ever really happened I never got a more balanced view of her. So it has always been this larger-than-life feeling about what could have been, even though I deep down know that's just an overly romanticized notion of her.

What I love about listening to the vault songs, as someone who has listened to her music and been a fan since the beginning, is just how they all feel perfect for each album. While these songs were written at the time of the original release with younger Taylor, they needed to be released with the current, older Taylor. She needed to grow and learn her lessons in a way that gives life to her vault tracks now. All the way from Bye Bye Baby to All Too Well 10 to songs like S!ut and Is It Over Now. Timeless, for example was the perfect Speak Now song but I can see why it didn’t fit the original release.

I'm pretty sure Harry has said/confirmed that his song "Carolina" is about a girl he met on a blind date, and then never saw again. 100 % agree that it would be surreal being set up on a blind date with either Harry Styles or Taylor Swift, but it is the most main character thing living that moment and them writing a song about you! What an icon, I can't imagine being that cool.

Hey Ally! I hope you read this. I am pretty new to this fandom and really started loving Taylor from the release of TTPD. Not that i didn't like Taylor earlier, but always just looked at her as Selena's best friend. Im a selenator too btw. So beong exposed to TTPD and the way she explores music fascinated me.
